  8. The Year of Jubilee

    “‘Count off seven sabbath years—seven times seven years—so that the seven sabbath years amount to a period of forty-nine years.
  9. “‘Observe my Sabbaths and have reverence for my sanctuary. I am the Lord.
  10. Then the land will enjoy its sabbath years all the time that it lies desolate and you are in the country of your enemies; then the land will rest and enjoy its sabbaths.
  11. All the time that it lies desolate, the land will have the rest it did not have during the sabbaths you lived in it.
  12. For the land will be deserted by them and will enjoy its sabbaths while it lies desolate without them. They will pay for their sins because they rejected my laws and abhorred my decrees.
  13. The Sabbath-Breaker Put to Death

    While the Israelites were in the wilderness, a man was found gathering wood on the Sabbath day.
  14. Sabbath Offerings

    “‘On the Sabbath day, make an offering of two lambs a year old without defect, together with its drink offering and a grain offering of two-tenths of an ephah of the finest flour mixed with olive oil.
  15. This is the burnt offering for every Sabbath, in addition to the regular burnt offering and its drink offering.
  16. “Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy, as the Lord your God has commanded you.
  17. but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your ox, your donkey or any of your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns, so that your male and female servants may rest, as you do.
  18. Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and that the Lord your God brought you out of there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the Lord your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath day.
  19. “Why go to him today?” he asked. “It’s not the New Moon or the Sabbath.” “That’s all right,” she said.
  20. He commanded them, saying, “This is what you are to do: You who are in the three companies that are going on duty on the Sabbath—a third of you guarding the royal palace,
  21. and you who are in the other two companies that normally go off Sabbath duty are all to guard the temple for the king.
  22. The commanders of units of a hundred did just as Jehoiada the priest ordered. Each one took his men—those who were going on duty on the Sabbath and those who were going off duty—and came to Jehoiada the priest.
  23. He took away the Sabbath canopy that had been built at the temple and removed the royal entryway outside the temple of the Lord, in deference to the king of Assyria.
  24. Some of the Kohathites, their fellow Levites, were in charge of preparing for every Sabbath the bread set out on the table.
  25. and whenever burnt offerings were presented to the Lord on the Sabbaths, at the New Moon feasts and at the appointed festivals. They were to serve before the Lord regularly in the proper number and in the way prescribed for them.
