    In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar—when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene—

  5. Jesus Calls Philip and Nathanael

    The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, “Follow me.”
  6. Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida.
  7. Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”
  8. “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Nathanael asked. “Come and see,” said Philip.
  9. “How do you know me?” Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.”
  10. When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?”
  11. Philip answered him, “It would take more than half a year’s wages to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!”
  12. They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, with a request. “Sir,” they said, “we would like to see Jesus.”
  13. Philip went to tell Andrew; Andrew and Philip in turn told Jesus.
  14. Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.”
  15. Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?
  16. When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they were staying. Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James.
  17. This proposal pleased the whole group. They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit; also Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas from Antioch, a convert to Judaism.
  18. Philip in Samaria

    Those who had been scattered preached the word wherever they went.
  19. Philip went down to a city in Samaria and proclaimed the Messiah there.
  20. When the crowds heard Philip and saw the signs he performed, they all paid close attention to what he said.
  21. But when they believed Philip as he proclaimed the good news of the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.
  22. Simon himself believed and was baptized. And he followed Philip everywhere, astonished by the great signs and miracles he saw.

    Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Go south to the road—the desert road—that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.”
  24. The Spirit told Philip, “Go to that chariot and stay near it.”
