  10. Abraham Tested

    Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied.
  11. He said to his servants, “Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you.”
  12. Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, “Father?” “Yes, my son?” Abraham replied. “The fire and wood are here,” Isaac said, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?”
  13. But the angel of the Lord called out to him from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied.
  14. “I am a foreigner and stranger among you. Sell me some property for a burial site here so I can bury my dead.”
  15. “Come, you who are blessed by the Lord,” he said. “Why are you standing out here? I have prepared the house and a place for the camels.”
  16. Here is Rebekah; take her and go, and let her become the wife of your master’s son, as the Lord has directed.”
  17. When Isaac was old and his eyes were so weak that he could no longer see, he called for Esau his older son and said to him, “My son.” “Here I am,” he answered.
  18. Then his father Isaac said to him, “Come here, my son, and kiss me.”
  19. Then Jacob asked them, “Is he well?” “Yes, he is,” they said, “and here comes his daughter Rachel with the sheep.”
  20. Laban said, “It’s better that I give her to you than to some other man. Stay here with me.”
  21. Laban replied, “It is not our custom here to give the younger daughter in marriage before the older one.
  22. Then she said, “Here is Bilhah, my servant. Sleep with her so that she can bear children for me and I too can build a family through her.”
  23. The angel of God said to me in the dream, ‘Jacob.’ I answered, ‘Here I am.’
  24. But if you find anyone who has your gods, that person shall not live. In the presence of our relatives, see for yourself whether there is anything of yours here with me; and if so, take it.” Now Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen the gods.
  25. Now that you have searched through all my goods, what have you found that belongs to your household? Put it here in front of your relatives and mine, and let them judge between the two of us.
