A Rebellious Nation

Hear me, you heavens! Listen, earth!(A)
    For the Lord has spoken:(B)
“I reared children(C) and brought them up,
    but they have rebelled(D) against me.
The ox knows(E) its master,
    the donkey its owner’s manger,(F)
but Israel does not know,(G)
    my people do not understand.(H)

Woe to the sinful nation,
    a people whose guilt is great,(I)
a brood of evildoers,(J)
    children given to corruption!(K)
They have forsaken(L) the Lord;
    they have spurned the Holy One(M) of Israel
    and turned their backs(N) on him.

Why should you be beaten(O) anymore?
    Why do you persist(P) in rebellion?(Q)
Your whole head is injured,
    your whole heart(R) afflicted.(S)
From the sole of your foot to the top of your head(T)
    there is no soundness(U)
only wounds and welts(V)
    and open sores,
not cleansed or bandaged(W)
    or soothed with olive oil.(X)

Your country is desolate,(Y)
    your cities burned with fire;(Z)
your fields are being stripped by foreigners(AA)
    right before you,
    laid waste as when overthrown by strangers.(AB)
Daughter Zion(AC) is left(AD)
    like a shelter in a vineyard,
like a hut(AE) in a cucumber field,
    like a city under siege.
Unless the Lord Almighty
    had left us some survivors,(AF)
we would have become like Sodom,
    we would have been like Gomorrah.(AG)

10 Hear the word of the Lord,(AH)
    you rulers of Sodom;(AI)
listen to the instruction(AJ) of our God,
    you people of Gomorrah!(AK)
11 “The multitude of your sacrifices—
    what are they to me?” says the Lord.
“I have more than enough of burnt offerings,
    of rams and the fat of fattened animals;(AL)
I have no pleasure(AM)
    in the blood of bulls(AN) and lambs and goats.(AO)
12 When you come to appear before me,
    who has asked this of you,(AP)
    this trampling of my courts?
13 Stop bringing meaningless offerings!(AQ)
    Your incense(AR) is detestable(AS) to me.
New Moons,(AT) Sabbaths and convocations(AU)
    I cannot bear your worthless assemblies.
14 Your New Moon(AV) feasts and your appointed festivals(AW)
    I hate with all my being.(AX)
They have become a burden to me;(AY)
    I am weary(AZ) of bearing them.
15 When you spread out your hands(BA) in prayer,
    I hide(BB) my eyes from you;
even when you offer many prayers,
    I am not listening.(BC)

Your hands(BD) are full of blood!(BE)

16 Wash(BF) and make yourselves clean.
    Take your evil deeds out of my sight;(BG)
    stop doing wrong.(BH)
17 Learn to do right;(BI) seek justice.(BJ)
    Defend the oppressed.[a](BK)
Take up the cause of the fatherless;(BL)
    plead the case of the widow.(BM)

18 “Come now, let us settle the matter,”(BN)
    says the Lord.
“Though your sins are like scarlet,
    they shall be as white as snow;(BO)
though they are red as crimson,
    they shall be like wool.(BP)
19 If you are willing and obedient,(BQ)
    you will eat the good things of the land;(BR)
20 but if you resist and rebel,(BS)
    you will be devoured by the sword.”(BT)
For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.(BU)

(A)Listen, heavens, and hear, (B)earth;
For the Lord has spoken:
(C)Sons I have raised and brought up,
But they have (D)revolted against Me.
An ox knows its owner,
And a donkey its master’s manger,
But Israel (E)does not know,
My people (F)do not understand.”

Oh, sinful nation,
People weighed down with guilt,
[a](G)Offspring of evildoers,
Sons who (H)act corruptly!
They have (I)abandoned the Lord,
They have (J)despised the Holy One of Israel,
They have turned away [b]from Him.

Where will you be stricken again,
As you (K)continue in your rebellion?
The entire head is (L)sick
And the entire heart is faint.
(M)From the sole of the foot even to the head
There is (N)nothing healthy in it,
Only bruises, slashes, and raw wounds;
(O)Not pressed out nor bandaged,
Nor softened with oil.

Your (P)land is desolate,
Your cities are burned with fire;
As for your fields, strangers are devouring them in front of you;
It is desolation, as overthrown by strangers.
The daughter of Zion is left like a shelter in a vineyard,
Like a watchman’s hut in a cucumber field, like a city under watch.
(Q)If the Lord of armies
Had not left us a few (R)survivors,
We would be like (S)Sodom,
We would be like Gomorrah.

God Has Had Enough

10 Hear (T)the word of the Lord,
You rulers of (U)Sodom;
Listen to the instruction of our God,
You people of Gomorrah!
11 (V)What are your many sacrifices to Me?”
Says the Lord.
“I [c]have had enough of burnt offerings of rams
And the fat of fattened cattle;
And I take no pleasure in the blood of bulls, lambs, or goats.
12 When you come (W)to appear before Me,
Who requires [d]of you this trampling of My courtyards?
13 Do not go on bringing your worthless offerings,
(X)Incense is an abomination to Me.
(Y)New moon and Sabbath, the (Z)proclamation of an assembly—
I cannot (AA)endure wrongdoing and the festive assembly.
14 [e]I hate your new moon festivals and your (AB)appointed feasts,
They have become a burden to Me;
I am (AC)tired of bearing them.
15 So when you (AD)spread out your hands in prayer,
(AE)I will hide My eyes from you;
Yes, even though you (AF)offer many prayers,
I will not be listening.
(AG)Your hands are [f]covered with blood.

16 (AH)Wash yourselves, (AI)make yourselves clean;
(AJ)Remove the evil of your deeds from My sight.
(AK)Stop doing evil,
17 Learn to do good;
(AL)Seek justice,
Rebuke the oppressor,
(AM)Obtain justice for the orphan,
Plead for the widow’s case.

Invitation to Debate

18 “Come now, and (AN)let us [g]debate your case,”
Says the Lord,
(AO)Though your sins are as scarlet,
They shall become as white as snow;
Though they are red like crimson,
They shall be like wool.
19 (AP)If you are willing and obedient,
You will (AQ)eat the best of the land;
20 But if you refuse and rebel,
You will be (AR)devoured by the sword.”
For (AS)the mouth of the Lord has spoken.
