The Stoning of Stephen

54 When the members of the Sanhedrin heard this, they were furious(A) and gnashed their teeth at him. 55 But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit,(B) looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.(C) 56 “Look,” he said, “I see heaven open(D) and the Son of Man(E) standing at the right hand of God.”

57 At this they covered their ears and, yelling at the top of their voices, they all rushed at him, 58 dragged him out of the city(F) and began to stone him.(G) Meanwhile, the witnesses(H) laid their coats(I) at the feet of a young man named Saul.(J)

59 While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”(K) 60 Then he fell on his knees(L) and cried out, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.”(M) When he had said this, he fell asleep.(N)

And Saul(O) approved of their killing him.

The Church Persecuted and Scattered

On that day a great persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered(P) throughout Judea and Samaria.(Q) Godly men buried Stephen and mourned deeply for him. But Saul(R) began to destroy the church.(S) Going from house to house, he dragged off both men and women and put them in prison.

Philip in Samaria

Those who had been scattered(T) preached the word wherever they went.(U) Philip(V) went down to a city in Samaria and proclaimed the Messiah there. When the crowds heard Philip and saw the signs he performed, they all paid close attention to what he said. For with shrieks, impure spirits came out of many,(W) and many who were paralyzed or lame were healed.(X) So there was great joy in that city.

Simon the Sorcerer

Now for some time a man named Simon had practiced sorcery(Y) in the city and amazed all the people of Samaria. He boasted that he was someone great,(Z) 10 and all the people, both high and low, gave him their attention and exclaimed, “This man is rightly called the Great Power of God.”(AA) 11 They followed him because he had amazed them for a long time with his sorcery. 12 But when they believed Philip as he proclaimed the good news of the kingdom of God(AB) and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized,(AC) both men and women.

Stephen Put to Death

54 Now when they heard this, they were (A)infuriated, and they began gnashing their teeth at him. 55 But he, being (B)full of the Holy Spirit, (C)looked intently into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing (D)at the right hand of God; 56 and he said, “Behold, I see the (E)heavens opened and (F)the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.” 57 But they shouted with loud voices, and covered their ears and rushed at him with one [a]mind. 58 When they had (G)driven him out of the city, they began stoning him; and (H)the witnesses (I)laid aside their cloaks at the feet of (J)a young man named Saul. 59 They went on stoning Stephen as he (K)called on the Lord and said, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!” 60 Then he (L)fell on his knees and cried out with a loud voice, “Lord, (M)do not hold this sin against them!” Having said this, he [b](N)fell asleep.

Saul Persecutes the Church

(O)Now Saul approved of putting [c]Stephen to death.

And on that day a great persecution [d]began against (P)the church in Jerusalem, and they were all (Q)scattered throughout the regions of Judea and (R)Samaria, except for the apostles. Some devout men buried Stephen, and mourned loudly for him. But (S)Saul began ravaging the church, entering house after house; and he would (T)drag away men and women and put them in prison.

Philip in Samaria

Therefore, those (U)who had been scattered went through places [e](V)preaching the word. (W)Philip went down to the city of Samaria and began proclaiming the [f]Christ to them. The crowds were paying attention with one mind to what was being said by Philip, as they heard and saw the [g]signs which he was performing. For in the case of many who had (X)unclean spirits, they were coming out of them shouting with a loud voice; and many who had been (Y)paralyzed or limped on crutches were healed. So there was (Z)much rejoicing in that city.

Now a man named Simon had previously been practicing (AA)magic in the city and astonishing the people of Samaria, (AB)claiming to be someone great; 10 and all the people, from small to great, were paying attention to him, saying, “(AC)This man is the Power of God that is called Great.” 11 And they were paying attention to him because for a long time he had astounded them with his (AD)magic arts. 12 But when they believed Philip (AE)as he was preaching the good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were being (AF)baptized.
