The Disciples Commissioned

14 Later (D)He appeared (E)to the eleven disciples themselves as they were reclining at the table; and He reprimanded them for their (F)unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who had seen Him after He had risen from the dead. 15 And He said to them, (G)Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. 16 (H)The one who has believed and has been baptized will be saved; but the one who has not believed will be condemned. 17 These signs will accompany those who have believed: (I)in My name they will cast out demons, they will (J)speak with new tongues; 18 they will (K)pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not harm them; they will (L)lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”

19 So then, when the Lord Jesus had (M)spoken to them, He (N)was received up into heaven and (O)sat down at the right hand of God. 20 And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them, and confirmed the word by the signs that followed.]]

12 After that, He appeared in a different form to two of them as they were walking along the way to the country.(A) 13 They returned [to Jerusalem] and told the others, but they did not believe them either.

The Disciples Commissioned

14 Later, Jesus appeared to the eleven [disciples] themselves as they were reclining at the table; and He called them to account for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who had seen Him after He had risen [from death]. 15 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. 16 He who has believed [in Me] and has been baptized will be saved [from the penalty of God’s wrath and judgment]; but he who has not believed will be condemned. 17 These signs will accompany those who have believed: in My name they will cast out demons, they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up serpents, and if they drink anything deadly, it will not hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will get well.”

19 So then, when the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, He was taken up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God.(B) 20 And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord was working with them and confirming the word by the signs that followed.]

12 Afterward he appeared in a different form to two of his followers who were walking from Jerusalem into the country. 13 They rushed back to tell the others, but no one believed them.

14 Still later he appeared to the eleven disciples as they were eating together. He rebuked them for their stubborn unbelief because they refused to believe those who had seen him after he had been raised from the dead.[a]

15 And then he told them, “Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone. 16 Anyone who believes and is baptized will be saved. But anyone who refuses to believe will be condemned. 17 These miraculous signs will accompany those who believe: They will cast out demons in my name, and they will speak in new languages.[b] 18 They will be able to handle snakes with safety, and if they drink anything poisonous, it won’t hurt them. They will be able to place their hands on the sick, and they will be healed.”

19 When the Lord Jesus had finished talking with them, he was taken up into heaven and sat down in the place of honor at God’s right hand. 20 And the disciples went everywhere and preached, and the Lord worked through them, confirming what they said by many miraculous signs.

  1. 16:14 Some early manuscripts add: And they excused themselves, saying, “This age of lawlessness and unbelief is under Satan, who does not permit God’s truth and power to conquer the evil [unclean] spirits. Therefore, reveal your justice now.” This is what they said to Christ. And Christ replied to them, “The period of years of Satan’s power has been fulfilled, but other dreadful things will happen soon. And I was handed over to death for those who have sinned, so that they may return to the truth and sin no more, and so they may inherit the spiritual, incorruptible, and righteous glory in heaven.”
  2. 16:17 Or new tongues; some manuscripts do not include new.

12 After that he appeared in another form unto two of them, as they walked, and went into the country.

13 And they went and told it unto the residue: neither believed they them.

14 Afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen.

15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;

18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

19 So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.

20 And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.

The Great Commission

14 Afterward (E)he appeared (F)to the eleven themselves as they were reclining at table, and he rebuked them for their (G)unbelief and (H)hardness of heart, because (I)they had not believed those who saw him after he had risen. 15 And he said to them, (J)“Go into all the world and (K)proclaim the gospel to (L)the whole creation. 16 (M)Whoever believes and is (N)baptized (O)will be saved, but (P)whoever (Q)does not believe will be condemned. 17 And (R)these signs will accompany those who believe: (S)in my name they will cast out demons; (T)they will speak in new tongues; 18 (U)they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; (V)they will lay their hands (W)on the sick, and they will recover.”
