  1. So they bound him, led him away and handed him over to Pilate the governor.
  2. Jesus Before Pilate

    Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?” “You have said so,” Jesus replied.
  3. Then Pilate asked him, “Don’t you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?”
  4. So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate asked them, “Which one do you want me to release to you: Jesus Barabbas, or Jesus who is called the Messiah?”
  5. While Pilate was sitting on the judge’s seat, his wife sent him this message: “Don’t have anything to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream because of him.”
  6. “What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called the Messiah?” Pilate asked. They all answered, “Crucify him!”
  7. “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”
  8. When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. “I am innocent of this man’s blood,” he said. “It is your responsibility!”
  9. Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him.
  10. The Guard at the Tomb

    The next day, the one after Preparation Day, the chief priests and the Pharisees went to Pilate.
  11. “Take a guard,” Pilate answered. “Go, make the tomb as secure as you know how.”
  12. Jesus Before Pilate

    Very early in the morning, the chief priests, with the elders, the teachers of the law and the whole Sanhedrin, made their plans. So they bound Jesus, led him away and handed him over to Pilate.
  13. “Are you the king of the Jews?” asked Pilate. “You have said so,” Jesus replied.
  14. So again Pilate asked him, “Aren’t you going to answer? See how many things they are accusing you of.”
  15. But Jesus still made no reply, and Pilate was amazed.
  16. The crowd came up and asked Pilate to do for them what he usually did.
  17. “Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?” asked Pilate,
  18. But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have Pilate release Barabbas instead.
  19. “What shall I do, then, with the one you call the king of the Jews?” Pilate asked them.
  20. “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”
  21. Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.
  22. Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Council, who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body.
  23. Pilate was surprised to hear that he was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him if Jesus had already died.
  24. John the Baptist Prepares the Way

    In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar—when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene—
