Genesis 4:2-10
New International Version
2 Later she gave birth to his brother Abel.(A)
Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil.(B) 3 In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering(C) to the Lord.(D) 4 And Abel also brought an offering—fat portions(E) from some of the firstborn of his flock.(F) The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering,(G) 5 but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.
6 Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry?(H) Why is your face downcast? 7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door;(I) it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.(J)”
8 Now Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let’s go out to the field.”[a] While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.(K)
9 Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?”(L)
“I don’t know,(M)” he replied. “Am I my brother’s keeper?”
10 The Lord said, “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground.(N)

New American Standard Bible
2 And again, she gave birth to his brother Abel. Now (A)Abel was (B)a keeper of flocks, but Cain was a cultivator of the ground. 3 So it came about [a]in the course of time that Cain brought an offering to the Lord from the fruit of the ground. 4 (C)Abel, on his part also brought an offering, from the firstborn of his flock and from their fat portions. And (D)the Lord had regard for Abel and his offering; 5 but (E)for Cain and his offering He had no regard. So (F)Cain became very angry and his face [b]was gloomy. 6 Then the Lord said to Cain, “(G)Why are you angry? And why is your face [c]gloomy? 7 (H)If you do well, [d]will your face not be [e]cheerful? (I)And if you do not do well, sin is lurking at the door; and its desire is for you, (J)but you must master it.” 8 Cain [f]talked to his brother Abel; and it happened that when they were in the field Cain rose up against his brother Abel and (K)killed him.
9 Then the Lord said to Cain, “(L)Where is Abel your brother?” And he said, “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?” 10 Then He said, “What have you done? (M)The voice of your brother’s blood is crying out to Me from the ground.
