Satan Bound

20 Then I saw ^(A)an angel coming down from heaven, holding the ^(B)key of the abyss and a great chain ^[a]in his hand. ² And he took hold of the ^(C)dragon, the serpent of old, who is the devil and Satan, and ^(D)bound him for a thousand years; ³ and he threw him into the ^(E)abyss and shut it and ^(F)sealed it over him, so that he would ^(G)not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were completed; after these things he must be released for a short time.

The Fifth Trumpet: Shaft of the Abyss

9 Then the ^(A)fifth angel sounded, and I saw a ^(B)star from heaven which had fallen to the earth; and the ^(C)key to the ^(D)shaft of the abyss was given to him. ² He opened the shaft of the abyss, and ^(E)smoke ascended out of the shaft like the smoke of a great furnace; and ^(F)the sun and the air were darkened from the smoke of the shaft. ³ Then out of the smoke came ^(G)locusts ^[a]upon the earth, and power was given them, as the ^(H)scorpions of the earth have power. ⁴ They were told not to ^(I)hurt the ^(J)grass of the earth, nor any green thing, nor any tree, but only the people who do not have the ^(K)seal of God on their foreheads. ⁵ And ^[b]they were not permitted to kill ^[c]anyone, but to torment for ^(L)five months; and their torment was like the torment of a ^(M)scorpion when it ^[d]stings a person. ⁶ And in those days ^(N)people will seek death and will not find it; they will long to die, and death ^[e]will flee from them!

⁷ The ^[f](O)appearance of the locusts was like horses prepared for battle; and on their heads appeared to be crowns like gold, and their faces were like human faces. ⁸ They had hair like the hair of women, and their ^(P)teeth were like the teeth of lions. ⁹ They had breastplates like breastplates of iron; and the ^(Q)sound of their wings was like the sound of chariots, of many horses rushing to battle. ¹⁰ They have tails like ^(R)scorpions, and stings; and in their ^(S)tails is their power to hurt people for ^(T)five months. ¹¹ They have as king over them, the angel of the ^(U)abyss; his name in ^(V)Hebrew is ^[g](W)Abaddon, and in the Greek he has the name ^[h]Apollyon.

The Joyful Results

¹⁷ Now the ^[a]seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even ^(A)the demons are subject to us ^[b]in Your name!” ¹⁸ And He said to them, “I watched ^(B)Satan fall from heaven like lightning. ¹⁹ Behold, I have given you authority to ^(C)walk on snakes and scorpions, and authority over all the power of the enemy, and nothing will injure you. ²⁰ Nevertheless, do not ^[c]rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that ^(D)your names are recorded in heaven.”

²⁷ And when He stepped out onto the land, a man from the city met Him who was possessed with demons; and he had not put on clothing for a long time and was not living in a house, but among the tombs. ²⁸ And seeing Jesus, he cried out and fell down before Him, and said with a loud voice, “^[a](A)What business do You have with me, Jesus, Son of ^(B)the Most High God? I beg You, do not torment me!” ²⁹ For He had already commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For it had seized him many times; and he was bound with chains and shackles and kept under guard, and yet he would break the restraints and be driven by the demon into the desert. ³⁰ And Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” And he said, “^(C)Legion”; because many demons had entered him. ³¹ And they were begging Him not to command them to go away into ^(D)the abyss.

Made Alive in Christ

2 And ^[a]you ^[b]were ^(A)dead ^[c]in your offenses and sins, ² in which you ^(B)previously walked according to the ^[d]course of ^(C)this world, according to ^(D)the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in ^(E)the ^[e]sons of disobedience. ³ Among them ^[f]we too all ^(F)previously lived in ^(G)the lusts of our flesh, ^[g]indulging the desires of the flesh and of the ^[h]mind, and were ^(H)by nature ^(I)children of wrath, ^(J)just as the rest.

^11 (A)Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the ^(B)schemes of the devil.

The Christian’s Walk

^17 (A)So I say this, and affirm in the Lord, ^(B)that you are to no longer walk just as the ^[a]Gentiles also walk, in the ^(C)futility of their minds, ¹⁸ being ^(D)darkened in their understanding, ^[b](E)excluded from the life of God because of the ^(F)ignorance that is in them, because of the ^(G)hardness of their heart; ¹⁹ and they, having ^(H)become callous, ^(I)have given themselves up to ^(J)indecent behavior ^[c]for the practice of every kind of impurity with greediness.

²⁴ Therefore ^(A)God gave them up to vile impurity in the lusts of their hearts, so that their bodies would be ^(B)dishonored among them.

²⁶ For this reason ^(A)God gave them over to ^(B)degrading passions; for their women exchanged natural relations for that which is contrary to nature,
