Psalm 69

A Cry of Distress and a Curse on Adversaries.

For the music director; according to ^[a]Shoshannim. A Psalm of David.

69 Save me, God,
For the ^(A)waters have ^[b]threatened my life.
²I have sunk in deep ^(B)mud, and there is no foothold;
I have come into deep waters, and a ^[c]^(C)flood overflows me.
³I am ^(D)weary with my crying; my throat is parched;
My ^(E)eyes fail while I wait for my God.
⁴Those ^(F)who hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of my head;
Those who would ^[d]destroy me ^(G)are powerful, those who oppose me with lies;
^(H)What I did not steal, I then have to restore.

⁵God, You know ^(I)my foolishness,
And ^(J)my guilt is not hidden from You.
⁶May those who wait for You not ^(K)be ashamed because of me, Lord ^[e]God of armies;
May those who seek You not be dishonored because of me, God of Israel,
⁷Because ^(L)for Your sake I have endured disgrace;
^(M)Dishonor has covered my face.
⁸I have become ^(N)estranged ^[f]from my brothers,
And a stranger to my mother’s sons.
⁹For ^(O)zeal for Your house has consumed me,
And ^(P)the taunts of those who taunt You have fallen on me.
¹⁰When I wept ^(Q)in my soul with fasting,
It became my ^(R)disgrace.
¹¹When I made ^(S)sackcloth my clothing,
I became ^(T)a proverb to them.
¹²Those who ^(U)sit in the gate talk about me,
And ^(V)songs of mockery by those habitually drunk are about me.

¹³But as for me, my prayer is to You, Lord, ^(W)at an acceptable time;
God, in the ^(X)greatness of Your mercy,
Answer me with ^[g]Your saving truth.
¹⁴Rescue me from the ^(Y)mud and do not let me sink;
May I be ^(Z)rescued from those who hate me, and from the ^(AA)depths of water.
¹⁵May the ^[h]^(AB)flood of water not overflow me
Nor the deep swallow me up,
Nor the ^(AC)pit close its mouth on me.

¹⁶Answer me, Lord, for ^(AD)Your mercy is good;
^(AE)According to the greatness of Your compassion, ^(AF)turn to me,
¹⁷And ^(AG)do not hide Your face from Your servant,
For I am ^(AH)in distress; answer me quickly.
¹⁸Come near to my soul and ^(AI)redeem it;
^(AJ)Ransom me because of my enemies!
¹⁹You know my ^(AK)disgrace, my shame, and my dishonor;
All my enemies are ^[i]known to You.

²⁰Disgrace has ^(AL)broken my heart, and I am so sick.
And ^(AM)I waited for sympathy, but there was none;
And for ^(AN)comforters, but I found none.
²¹They also gave me ^[j]^(AO)a bitter herb in my food,
And for my thirst they ^(AP)gave me vinegar to drink.

²²May ^(AQ)their table before them become a snare;
And ^[k]^(AR)when they are at peace, may it become a trap.
²³May their ^(AS)eyes grow dim so that they cannot see,
And make their ^(AT)hips shake continually.
²⁴^(AU)Pour out Your indignation on them,
And may Your burning anger overtake them.
²⁵May their ^[l]^(AV)camp be desolated;
May there be none living in their tents.
²⁶For they have ^(AW)persecuted him whom ^(AX)You Yourself struck,
And they tell of the pain of those whom ^(AY)You have ^[m]wounded.
²⁷Add ^(AZ)guilt to their guilt,
And ^(BA)may they not come into ^(BB)Your righteousness.
²⁸May they be ^(BC)wiped out of the ^(BD)book of life,
And may they not be ^[n]^(BE)recorded with the righteous.

²⁹But I am ^(BF)afflicted and in pain;
^[o]May Your salvation, God, ^(BG)set me safely on high.
³⁰I will ^(BH)praise the name of God with song,
And ^(BI)exalt Him with ^(BJ)thanksgiving.
³¹And it will ^(BK)please the Lord better than an ox
Or bull with horns and hoofs.
³²The ^(BL)humble ^[p]have seen it and are glad;
You who seek God, ^(BM)let your heart ^[q]revive.
³³For ^(BN)the Lord hears the needy,
And ^(BO)does not despise those of His who are prisoners.

³⁴^(BP)Heaven and earth shall praise Him,
The seas and ^(BQ)everything that moves in them.
³⁵For God will ^(BR)save Zion and ^(BS)build the cities of Judah,
So that they may live there and ^(BT)possess it.
³⁶The ^[r]^(BU)descendants of His servants will inherit it,
And those who love His name ^(BV)will live in it.

70 ^(A)God, hurry to save me;
Lord, hurry to help me!
²^(B)May those who seek my ^[a]life
Be put to shame and humiliated;
May those who delight ^[b]in my harm
Be turned back and dishonored.
³^(C)May those who say, “Aha, aha!” be ^[c]turned back
Because of their shame.

⁴May all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You;
And may those who love Your salvation say continually,
“May God be exalted!”
⁵But ^(D)I am afflicted and needy;
^(E)Hurry to me, God!
You are my help and my savior;
Lord, do not delay.

71 ^(A)In You, Lord, I have taken refuge;
Let me never be put to shame.
²^(B)In Your righteousness rescue me and save me;
^(C)Extend Your ear to me and help me.
³^(D)Be to me a rock of ^(E)dwelling to which I may continually come;
You have given the ^(F)commandment to save me,
For You are ^(G)my rock and my fortress.
⁴^(H)Save me, my God, from the hand of the wicked,
From the ^[a]grasp of the wrongdoer and the ruthless,
⁵For You are my ^(I)hope;
Lord ^[b]God, You are my ^(J)confidence from my youth.
⁶I have ^(K)leaned on You since my birth;
You are He who ^(L)took me from my mother’s womb;
My ^(M)praise is continually ^[c]of You.

⁷I have become a ^(N)marvel to many,
For You are ^(O)my strong refuge.
⁸My ^(P)mouth is filled with Your praise

⁹Do not cast me away at the ^(R)time of my old age;
Do not abandon me when my strength fails.

Pursue and seize him, for there is ^(V)no one to save him.”

¹²God, ^(W)do not be far from me;
My God, ^(X)hurry to my aid!
¹³May those who are enemies of my soul be ^(Y)put to shame and consumed;
May they be ^(Z)covered with disgrace and dishonor, who ^(AA)seek ^[f]to injure me.
¹⁴But as for me, I will ^(AB)wait continually,
And will ^[g]^(AC)praise You yet more and more.
¹⁵My ^(AD)mouth shall tell of Your righteousness
And of ^(AE)Your salvation all day long;
For I ^(AF)do not know the art of writing.
¹⁶I will come ^(AG)with the mighty deeds of the Lord ^[h]God;
I will ^(AH)make mention of Your righteousness, Yours alone.

¹⁷God, You ^(AI)have taught me from my youth,
And I still ^(AJ)declare Your wondrous deeds.
¹⁸And even when I am ^(AK)old and gray, God, do not abandon me,
Until I ^(AL)declare Your ^[i]strength to this generation,
Your power to all who are to come.
¹⁹^[j]For Your ^(AM)righteousness, God, reaches to the ^[k]heavens,
You who have ^(AN)done great things;
God, ^(AO)who is like You?
²⁰You who have ^(AP)shown ^[l]me many troubles and distresses
Will ^(AQ)revive ^[m]me again,
And will bring ^[n]me up again ^(AR)from the depths of the earth.
²¹May You increase my ^(AS)greatness
And turn to ^(AT)comfort me.

²²I will also praise You with ^[o]^(AU)a harp,
And Your ^[p]truth, my God;
I will sing praises to You with the ^(AV)lyre,
^(AW)Holy One of Israel.
²³My lips will ^(AX)shout for joy when I sing praises to You;
And my ^(AY)soul, which You have redeemed.
²⁴My ^(AZ)tongue also will tell of Your righteousness all day long;

86 ^(A)Incline Your ear, Lord, and answer me;
For I am ^(B)afflicted and needy.
²^(C)Protect my ^[a]soul, for I am ^(D)godly;
You my God, save Your servant who ^(E)trusts in You.
³Be ^(F)gracious to me, Lord,
For ^(G)I call upon You all day long.
⁴Make the soul of Your servant joyful,
For to You, Lord, ^(H)I lift up my soul.
⁵For You, Lord, are ^(I)good, and ^(J)ready to forgive,
And ^(K)abundant in mercy to all who call upon You.
⁶^(L)Listen, Lord, to my prayer;
And give Your attention to the sound of my pleading!
⁷On ^(M)the day of my trouble I will call upon You,
For ^(N)You will answer me.
⁸There is ^(O)no one like You among the gods, Lord,
Nor are there any works ^(P)like Yours.

¹³For Your graciousness toward me is great,

¹⁴God, arrogant men have ^(Y)risen up against me,
And a gang of violent men have sought my ^[e]life,
And they have not set You before them.
¹⁵But You, Lord, are a ^(Z)compassionate and gracious God,
Slow to anger and abundant in mercy and ^[f]truth.
¹⁶^(AA)Turn to me, and be gracious to me;
^(AB)Grant Your strength to Your servant,
And save the ^(AC)son of Your maidservant.
¹⁷^(AD)Show me a sign of good,
That those who hate me may ^(AE)see it and be ashamed,
