Psalm 23

A psalm of David.

The Lord is my shepherd,(A) I lack nothing.(B)
He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,(C)
    he refreshes my soul.(D)
He guides me(E) along the right paths(F)
    for his name’s sake.(G)
Even though I walk
    through the darkest valley,[a](H)
I will fear no evil,(I)
    for you are with me;(J)
your rod and your staff,
    they comfort me.

You prepare a table(K) before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;(L)
    my cup(M) overflows.
Surely your goodness and love(N) will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord
    forever.

Footnotes

  1. Psalm 23:4 Or the valley of the shadow of death

We do not want you to be uninformed,(A) brothers and sisters,[a] about the troubles we experienced(B) in the province of Asia.(C) We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired of life itself. Indeed, we felt we had received the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God,(D) who raises the dead.(E) 10 He has delivered us from such a deadly peril,(F) and he will deliver us again. On him we have set our hope(G) that he will continue to deliver us, 11 as you help us by your prayers.(H) Then many will give thanks(I) on our behalf for the gracious favor granted us in answer to the prayers of many.

Footnotes

  1. 2 Corinthians 1:8 The Greek word for brothers and sisters (adelphoi) refers here to believers, both men and women, as part of God’s family; also in 8:1; 13:11.

15 All this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving(A) to overflow to the glory of God.

16 Therefore we do not lose heart.(B) Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly(C) we are being renewed(D) day by day. 17 For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.(E) 18 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen,(F) since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

Awaiting the New Body

For we know that if the earthly(G) tent(H) we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. Meanwhile we groan,(I) longing to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling,(J) because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked. For while we are in this tent, we groan(K) and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling,(L) so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. Now the one who has fashioned us for this very purpose is God, who has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.(M)

Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. For we live by faith, not by sight.(N) We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord.(O)
