22     Do not be afraid, you wild animals,
    for the pastures in the wilderness are becoming green.(A)
The trees are bearing their fruit;
    the fig tree(B) and the vine(C) yield their riches.(D)
23 Be glad, people of Zion,
    rejoice(E) in the Lord your God,
for he has given you the autumn rains
    because he is faithful.(F)
He sends you abundant showers,(G)
    both autumn(H) and spring rains,(I) as before.
24 The threshing floors will be filled with grain;
    the vats will overflow(J) with new wine(K) and oil.

25 “I will repay you for the years the locusts(L) have eaten(M)
    the great locust and the young locust,
    the other locusts and the locust swarm[a]
my great army(N) that I sent among you.
26 You will have plenty to eat, until you are full,(O)
    and you will praise(P) the name of the Lord your God,
    who has worked wonders(Q) for you;
never again will my people be shamed.(R)
27 Then you will know(S) that I am in Israel,
    that I am the Lord(T) your God,
    and that there is no other;
never again will my people be shamed.(U)

The Day of the Lord

28 “And afterward,
    I will pour out my Spirit(V) on all people.(W)
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,(X)
    your old men will dream dreams,(Y)
    your young men will see visions.
29 Even on my servants,(Z) both men and women,
    I will pour out my Spirit in those days.(AA)
30 I will show wonders in the heavens(AB)
    and on the earth,(AC)
    blood and fire and billows of smoke.
31 The sun will be turned to darkness(AD)
    and the moon to blood
    before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord.(AE)
32 And everyone who calls
    on the name of the Lord(AF) will be saved;(AG)
for on Mount Zion(AH) and in Jerusalem
    there will be deliverance,(AI)
    as the Lord has said,
even among the survivors(AJ)
    whom the Lord calls.[b](AK)

Footnotes

  1. Joel 2:25 The precise meaning of the four Hebrew words used here for locusts is uncertain.
  2. Joel 2:32 In Hebrew texts 2:28-32 is numbered 3:1-5.

For I am already being poured out like a drink offering,(A) and the time for my departure is near.(B) I have fought the good fight,(C) I have finished the race,(D) I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me(E) the crown of righteousness,(F) which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day(G)—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.(H)

Personal Remarks

Do your best to come to me quickly,(I) 10 for Demas,(J) because he loved this world,(K) has deserted me and has gone to Thessalonica.(L) Crescens has gone to Galatia,(M) and Titus(N) to Dalmatia. 11 Only Luke(O) is with me.(P) Get Mark(Q) and bring him with you, because he is helpful to me in my ministry. 12 I sent Tychicus(R) to Ephesus.(S) 13 When you come, bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas,(T) and my scrolls, especially the parchments.

14 Alexander(U) the metalworker did me a great deal of harm. The Lord will repay him for what he has done.(V) 15 You too should be on your guard against him, because he strongly opposed our message.

16 At my first defense, no one came to my support, but everyone deserted me. May it not be held against them.(W) 17 But the Lord stood at my side(X) and gave me strength,(Y) so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it.(Z) And I was delivered from the lion’s mouth.(AA) 18 The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack(AB) and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom.(AC) To him be glory for ever and ever. Amen.(AD)
