²¹ So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep;^(A) and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs^[a] and then closed up the place with flesh. ²² Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib^[b](B) he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.

²³ The man said,

²⁴ That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united^(F) to his wife, and they become one flesh.^(G)

²⁵ Adam and his wife were both naked,^(H) and they felt no shame.

The Fall

3 Now the serpent^(I) was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?^(J)”

² The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,^{(K) 3} but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’”^(L)

⁴ “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman.^{(M) 5} “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God,^(N) knowing good and evil.”

⁶ When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable^(O) for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband,^(P) who was with her, and he ate it.^{(Q) 7} Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked;^(R) so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.^(S)

⁸ Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking^(T) in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid^(U) from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. ⁹ But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?”^(V)

Instructions on Worship

2 I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers,^(A) intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— ² for kings and all those in authority,^(B) that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness^(C) and holiness. ³ This is good, and pleases^(D) God our Savior,^{(E) 4} who wants^(F) all people^(G) to be saved^(H) and to come to a knowledge of the truth.^{(I) 5} For there is one God^(J) and one mediator^(K) between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus,^{(L) 6} who gave himself as a ransom^(M) for all people. This has now been witnessed to^(N) at the proper time.^{(O) 7} And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostle—I am telling the truth, I am not lying^(P)—and a true and faithful teacher^(Q) of the Gentiles.^(R)

⁸ Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands^(S) without anger or disputing. ⁹ I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes,^{(T) 10} but with good deeds,^(U) appropriate for women who profess to worship God.

¹¹ A woman^[a] should learn in quietness and full submission.^{(V) 12} I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man;^[b] she must be quiet.^{(W) 13} For Adam was formed first, then Eve.^{(X) 14} And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner.^{(Y) 15} But women^[c] will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith, love^(Z) and holiness with propriety.
