Psalm 97

The Glory of God’s Reign

The Lord is king! Let the earth rejoice;
    let the many coastlands be glad!(A)
Clouds and thick darkness are all around him;
    righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.(B)
Fire goes before him
    and consumes his adversaries on every side.(C)
His lightnings light up the world;
    the earth sees and trembles.
The mountains melt like wax before the Lord,
    before the Lord of all the earth.(D)

The heavens proclaim his righteousness,
    and all the peoples behold his glory.
All servants of images are put to shame,
    those who make their boast in worthless idols;
    all gods bow down before him.(E)
Zion hears and is glad,
    and the towns[a] of Judah rejoice
    because of your judgments, O God.(F)
For you, O Lord, are most high over all the earth;
    you are exalted far above all gods.(G)

10 You who love the Lord, hate evil;
    he guards the lives of his faithful;
    he rescues them from the hand of the wicked.(H)
11 Light dawns[b] for the righteous
    and joy for the upright in heart.(I)
12 Rejoice in the Lord, O you righteous,
    and give thanks to his holy name!

Corruption of the Priesthood

A son honors his father and a servant his master. If then I am a father, where is the honor due me? And if I am a master, where is the respect due me? says the Lord of hosts to you, O priests, who despise my name. You say, “How have we despised your name?”(A) By offering polluted food on my altar. And you say, “How have we polluted it?”[a] By thinking that the Lord’s table may be despised.(B) When you offer blind animals in sacrifice, is that not wrong? And when you offer those that are lame or sick, is that not wrong? Try presenting that to your governor; will he be pleased with you or show you favor? says the Lord of hosts.(C) And now implore the favor of God, that he may be gracious to us. The fault is yours. Will he show favor to any of you? says the Lord of hosts.(D) 10 Oh, that someone among you would shut the temple[b] doors, so that you would not kindle fire on my altar in vain! I have no pleasure in you, says the Lord of hosts, and I will not accept an offering from your hands.(E) 11 For from the rising of the sun to its setting my name is great among the nations, and in every place incense is offered to my name and a pure offering, for my name is great among the nations, says the Lord of hosts.(F)
