Blow the horn in Zion;(A)
sound the alarm on My holy mountain!
Let all the residents of the land tremble,
for the Day of the Lord is coming;(B)
in fact, it is near—
a day of darkness and gloom,(C)
a day of clouds and dense overcast,(D)
like the dawn spreading over the mountains;
a great and strong people(E) appears,
such as never existed in ages past(F)
and never will again
in all the generations to come.(G)

A fire destroys[a] in front of them,(H)
and behind them a flame devours.
The land in front of them
is like the Garden of Eden,(I)
but behind them,
it is like a desert wasteland;(J)
there is no escape from them.
Their appearance is like that of horses,(K)
and they gallop like war horses.
They bound on the tops of the mountains.
Their sound is like the sound of chariots,(L)
like the sound of fiery flames consuming stubble,(M)
like a mighty army deployed for war.

Nations writhe in horror before them;(N)
all faces turn pale.
They attack as warriors attack;
they scale walls as men of war do.
Each goes on his own path,(O)
and they do not change their course.
They do not push each other;
each man proceeds on his own path.
They dodge the arrows, never stopping.
They storm the city;
they run on the wall;
they climb into the houses;(P)
they enter through the windows like thieves.(Q)

10 The earth quakes before them;(R)
the sky shakes.
The sun and moon grow dark,(S)
and the stars cease their shining.(T)
11 The Lord raises His voice(U)
in the presence of His army.(V)
His camp is very large;
Those who carry out His command are powerful.(W)
Indeed, the Day of the Lord is terrible and dreadful(X)
who can endure it?(Y)

God’s Call for Repentance

12 Even now—
this is the Lord’s declaration—
turn to Me with all your heart,(Z)
with fasting, weeping, and mourning.(AA)
13 Tear your hearts,(AB)
not just your clothes,(AC)
and return to the Lord your God.
For He is gracious and compassionate,
slow to anger, rich in faithful love,
and He relents from sending disaster.(AD)
14 Who knows? He may turn and relent(AE)
and leave a blessing behind Him,(AF)
so you can offer grain and wine
to the Lord your God.(AG)

15 Blow the horn in Zion!(AH)
Announce a sacred fast;(AI)
proclaim an assembly.
16 Gather the people;
sanctify the congregation;(AJ)
assemble the aged;[b](AK)
gather the children,
even those nursing at the breast.
Let the groom leave his bedroom,(AL)
and the bride her honeymoon chamber.
17 Let the priests,(AM) the Lord’s ministers,
weep between the portico and the altar.(AN)
Let them say:
“Have pity on Your people, Lord,(AO)
and do not make Your inheritance a disgrace,(AP)
an object of scorn among the nations.
Why should it be said among the peoples,
‘Where is their God?’”(AQ)

God’s Response to His People

18 Then the Lord became jealous for His land(AR) and spared His people.(AS) 19 The Lord answered His people:

Look, I am about to send you
grain, new wine, and olive oil.(AT)
You will be satiated with them,
and I will no longer make you
a disgrace among the nations.(AU)

20 I will drive the northerner far from you(AV)
and banish him to a dry and desolate land,
his front ranks into the Dead Sea,(AW)
and his rear guard into the Mediterranean Sea.(AX)
His stench will rise;
yes, his rotten smell will rise,(AY)
for he has done catastrophic things.

21 Don’t be afraid, land;(AZ)
rejoice and be glad,
for the Lord has done great things.(BA)
22 Don’t be afraid, wild animals,
for the wilderness pastures have turned green,(BB)
the trees bear their fruit,
and the fig tree and grapevine yield their riches.
23 Children of Zion,(BC) rejoice and be glad
in the Lord your God,(BD)
because He gives you the autumn rain
for your vindication.[c](BE)
He sends showers for you,
both autumn and spring rain(BF) as before.
24 The threshing floors will be full of grain,(BG)
and the vats will overflow
with new wine and olive oil.

25 I will repay you for the years
that the swarming locust ate,(BH)
the young locust, the destroying locust,
and the devouring locust—
My great army that I sent against you.
26 You will have plenty to eat and be satisfied.(BI)
You will praise the name of Yahweh your God,(BJ)
who has dealt wondrously with you.(BK)
My people will never again be put to shame.(BL)
27 You will know that I am present in Israel(BM)
and that I am Yahweh your God,
and there is no other.(BN)
My people will never again be put to shame.(BO)

God’s Promise of His Spirit

28 [d] After this(BP)
I will pour out My Spirit(BQ) on all humanity;(BR)
then your sons and your daughters will prophesy,
your old men will have dreams,
and your young men will see visions.
29 I will even pour out My Spirit
on the male and female slaves in those days.(BS)
30 I will display wonders
in the heavens and on the earth:(BT)
blood, fire, and columns of smoke.
31 The sun will be turned to darkness
and the moon to blood(BU)
before the great and awe-inspiring Day of the Lord comes.(BV)
32 Then everyone who calls
on the name of Yahweh will be saved,(BW)
for there will be an escape
for those on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem,
as the Lord promised,(BX)
among the survivors the Lord calls.

Judgment of the Nations

[e]Yes, in those days and at that time,
when I restore the fortunes of Judah and Jerusalem,(BY)
I will gather all the nations(BZ)
and take them to the Valley of Jehoshaphat.[f](CA)
I will enter into judgment with them there(CB)
because of My people, My inheritance Israel.
The nations have scattered the Israelites
in foreign countries(CC)
and divided up My land.(CD)
They cast lots for My people;(CE)
they bartered a boy for a prostitute
and sold a girl for wine to drink.(CF)

And also: Tyre,(CG) Sidon, and all the territories of Philistia(CH)—what are you to Me? Are you paying Me back or trying to get even with Me? I will quickly bring retribution on your heads.(CI) For you took My silver and gold and carried My finest treasures(CJ) to your temples. You sold the people of Judah and Jerusalem to the Greeks(CK) to remove them far from their own territory. Look, I am about to rouse them up from the place where you sold them;(CL) I will bring retribution on your heads. I will sell your sons and daughters into the hands of the people of Judah,(CM) and they will sell them to the Sabeans,[g](CN) to a distant nation, for the Lord has spoken.

Proclaim this among the nations:(CO)
Prepare for holy war;(CP)
rouse the warriors;(CQ)
let all the men of war advance and attack!
10 Beat your plows into swords
and your pruning knives into spears.(CR)
Let even the weakling say, “I am a warrior.”
11 Come quickly,[h] all you surrounding nations;
gather yourselves.(CS)
Bring down Your warriors there, Lord.(CT)

12 Let the nations be roused
and come to the Valley of Jehoshaphat,
for there I will sit down
to judge all the surrounding nations.(CU)
13 Swing the sickle
because the harvest is ripe.(CV)
Come and trample the grapes
because the winepress is full;(CW)
the wine vats overflow
because the wickedness of the nations is great.(CX)

14 Multitudes, multitudes(CY)
in the valley of decision!
For the Day of the Lord is near(CZ)
in the valley of decision.
15 The sun and moon will grow dark,
and the stars will cease their shining.(DA)
16 The Lord will roar from Zion(DB)
and raise His voice from Jerusalem;(DC)
heaven and earth will shake.(DD)
But the Lord will be a refuge for His people,(DE)
a stronghold for the Israelites.(DF)

Israel Blessed

17 Then you will know
that I am Yahweh your God,(DG)
who dwells in Zion, My holy mountain.(DH)
Jerusalem will be holy,(DI)
and foreigners will never overrun it again.(DJ)
18 In that day
the mountains will drip with sweet wine,(DK)
and the hills will flow with milk.(DL)
All the streams of Judah will flow with water,(DM)
and a spring will issue from the Lord’s house,(DN)
watering the Valley of Acacias.[i](DO)
19 Egypt will become desolate,
and Edom a desert wasteland,
because of the violence done to the people of Judah(DP)
in whose land they shed innocent blood.
20 But Judah will be inhabited forever,(DQ)
and Jerusalem from generation to generation.
21 I will pardon their bloodguilt,[j](DR)
which I have not pardoned,
for the Lord dwells in Zion.

Gentile Salvation Defended

11 The apostles and the brothers who were throughout Judea heard that the Gentiles had welcomed God’s message also. When Peter went up to Jerusalem, those who stressed circumcision[a] argued with him,(A) saying, “You visited uncircumcised men and ate with them!”(B)

Peter began to explain to them in an orderly sequence, saying: “I(C) was in the town of Joppa praying, and I saw, in a visionary state, an object that resembled a large sheet coming down, being lowered by its four corners from heaven, and it came to me. When I looked closely and considered it, I saw the four-footed animals of the earth, the wild beasts, the reptiles, and the birds of the sky. Then I also heard a voice telling me, ‘Get up, Peter; kill and eat!’

“‘No, Lord!’ I said. ‘For nothing common or ritually unclean has ever entered my mouth!’ But a voice answered from heaven a second time, ‘What God has made clean, you must not call common.’

10 “Now this happened three times, and then everything was drawn up again into heaven. 11 At that very moment, three men who had been sent to me from Caesarea arrived at the house where we were. 12 Then the Spirit told me to accompany them with no doubts at all. These six brothers accompanied me, and we went into the man’s house.(D) 13 He reported to us how he had seen the angel standing in his house and saying, ‘Send[b] to Joppa, and call for Simon, who is also named Peter. 14 He will speak a message[c] to you that you and all your household(E) will be saved by.’

15 “As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit came down on them, just as on us at the beginning.(F) 16 Then I remembered the word of the Lord, how He said, ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’(G) 17 Therefore, if God gave them the same gift that He also gave to us when we believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, how could I possibly hinder God?”(H)

18 When they heard this they became silent. Then they glorified God, saying, “So God has granted repentance resulting in life[d] even to the Gentiles!”(I)

The Church in Antioch

19 Those who had been scattered as a result of the persecution that started because of Stephen made their way as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch,(J) speaking the message to no one except Jews. 20 But there were some of them, Cypriot and Cyrenian men, who came to Antioch and began speaking to the Hellenists,[e][f] proclaiming the good news about the Lord Jesus.(K) 21 The Lord’s hand was with them, and a large number who believed turned to the Lord.(L) 22 Then the report about them was heard by the church that was at Jerusalem, and they sent out Barnabas to travel[g] as far as Antioch. 23 When he arrived and saw the grace of God, he was glad and encouraged all of them to remain true to the Lord with a firm resolve of the heart,(M) 24 for he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit(N) and of faith. And large numbers of people were added(O) to the Lord. 25 Then he[h] went to Tarsus to search for Saul, 26 and when he found him he brought him to Antioch. For a whole year they met with the church and taught large numbers. The disciples(P) were first called Christians at Antioch.(Q)

Famine Relief

27 In those days some prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch.(R) 28 Then one of them, named Agabus, stood up and predicted by the Spirit that there would be a severe famine throughout the Roman world.[i] This took place during the time of Claudius.[j](S) 29 So each of the disciples, according to his ability, determined to send relief to the brothers who lived in Judea.(T) 30 They did this, sending it to the elders(U) by means of Barnabas and Saul.
