The Ten Commandments Reviewed^(A)

5 And Moses called all Israel, and said to them: “Hear, O Israel, the statutes and judgments which I speak in your hearing today, that you may learn them and be careful to observe them. ^2 (B)The Lord our God made a covenant with us in Horeb. ³ The Lord ^(C)did not make this covenant with our fathers, but with us, those who are here today, all of us who are alive. ^4 (D)The Lord talked with you face to face on the mountain from the midst of the fire. ^5 (E)I stood between the Lord and you at that time, to declare to you the word of the Lord; for ^(F)you were afraid because of the fire, and you did not go up the mountain. He said:

Love Your Neighbor^(A)

⁸ Owe no one anything except to love one another, for ^(B)he who loves another has fulfilled the law. ⁹ For the commandments, ^(C)“You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” ^[a]“You shall not bear false witness,” “You shall not covet,” and if there is any other commandment, are all summed up in this saying, namely, ^(D)“You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” ¹⁰ Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore ^(E)love is the fulfillment of the law.

^17 (A)Repay no one evil for evil. ^(B)Have^[a] regard for good things in the sight of all men. ¹⁸ If it is possible, as much as depends on you, ^(C)live peaceably with all men. ¹⁹ Beloved, ^(D)do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, ^(E)“Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. ²⁰ Therefore

²¹ Do not be overcome by evil, but ^(G)overcome evil with good.

Christ Fulfills the Law

^17 (A)“Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. ¹⁸ For assuredly, I say to you, ^(B)till heaven and earth pass away, one ^[a]jot or one ^[b]tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled. ^19 (C)Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. ²⁰ For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds ^(D)the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.

Murder Begins in the Heart^(E)

²¹ “You have heard that it was said to those ^[c]of old, ^(F)‘You shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.’ ²² But I say to you that ^(G)whoever is angry with his brother ^[d]without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. And whoever says to his brother, ^(H)‘Raca!’^[e] shall be in danger of the council. But whoever says, ^[f]‘You fool!’ shall be in danger of ^[g]hell fire.

Adultery in the Heart

²⁷ “You have heard that it was said ^[a]to those of old, ^(A)‘You shall not commit adultery.’ ²⁸ But I say to you that whoever ^(B)looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

Go the Second Mile^(A)

³⁸ “You have heard that it was said, ^(B)‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ ^39 (C)But I tell you not to resist an evil person. ^(D)But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. ⁴⁰ If anyone wants to sue you and take away your tunic, let him have your cloak also. ⁴¹ And whoever ^(E)compels you to go one mile, go with him two. ⁴² Give to him who asks you, and ^(F)from him who wants to borrow from you do not turn away.

Love Your Enemies^(G)

⁴³ “You have heard that it was said, ^(H)‘You shall love your neighbor ^(I)and hate your enemy.’ ^44 [a]But I say to you, ^(J)love your enemies, bless those who curse you, ^(K)do good to those who hate you, and pray ^(L)for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, ⁴⁵ that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for ^(M)He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.
