Sacrifice and offering You do not desire, nor have You delight in them; You have given me the capacity to hear and obey [Your law, a more valuable service than] burnt offerings and sin offerings [which] You do not require.
You do not want sacrifices and ·offerings [grain offerings; or gifts; tribute; Lev. 2:1]. But you have ·made a hole in [or pierced; L dug] my ear [C to make him hear better or perhaps a reference to the ritual that made one a slave forever; Ex. 21:6; Heb. 10:5–7]. You do not ask for burnt offerings [Lev. 1:1–17] and ·sin [or purification] offerings [Lev. 4:3].
It’s not sacrifices that really move your heart. Burnt offerings, sin offerings—that’s not what brings you joy. But when you open my ears and speak deeply to me, I become your willing servant, your prisoner of love for life.
Thou wouldest not sacrifice and offering; but thou madest perfectly ears to me.
