Philemon 11
In time past he was to thee unprofitable, but now profitable to thee and to me.
who once was unprofitable to thee, but now is profitable to thee and to me:
Once he was useless to you, but now he is indeed useful to you as well as to me.
Once he was unprofitable to you, but now he is indeed profitable to you as well as to me.
Which in time past was to thee unprofitable, but now profitable to thee and to me:
He was useless to you before, but now he is useful to both of us.
His name means “useful,” and although he was once useless to you, he has now become most useful — not only to you but also to me;
Before this, he was useless to you, but now he is useful both to you and to me.
once unserviceable to thee, but now serviceable to thee and to me:
the one formerly useless to you but now useful both to you and to me,
Who hath been heretofore unprofitable to thee, but now is profitable both to me and thee,
In the past he was useless to you. But now he has become useful for both you and me.
(Formerly he was useless to you, but now he is indeed useful to you and to me.)
(Formerly he was useless to you, but now he is indeed useful to you and to me.)
In the past he was ·useless [unprofitable; worthless] to you, but now he has become ·useful [helpful; valuable] for both you and me [C a play on words, since Onesimus means “useful” or “helpful”].
Which in times past was to thee unprofitable, but now profitable both to thee and to me.
Once he was useless to you, but now he is very useful to both of us.
At one time he was of no use to you, but now he is useful both to you and to me.
Once he was useless to you, but now he is useful both to you and to me.
In the past he was useless to you. But now he has become useful for both you and me.
Once he was useless to you, but now he is very useful both to you and to me.
And although I could rely on my authority in Christ and dare to order you to do what I consider right, I am not doing that. No, I am appealing to that love of yours, a simple personal appeal from Paul the old man, in prison for Jesus Christ’s sake. I am appealing for my child. Yes I have become a father though I have been under lock and key, and the child’s name is—Onesimus! Oh, I know you have found him pretty useless in the past but he is going to be useful now, to both of us.
who in time past was to thee unprofitable, but now is profitable to thee and to me,
Which in time past was to thee unprofitable, but now profitable to thee and to me:
which in time past was to thee unprofitable, but now profitable to thee and to me:
Once he was useless to you, but now he is useful to you and to me,
Onesimus (whose name means “Useful”) hasn’t been of much use to you in the past, but now he is going to be of real use to both of us.
While here in jail, I’ve fathered a child, so to speak. And here he is, hand-carrying this letter—Onesimus! He was useless to you before; now he’s useful to both of us. I’m sending him back to you, but it feels like I’m cutting off my right arm in doing so. I wanted in the worst way to keep him here as your stand-in to help out while I’m in jail for the Message. But I didn’t want to do anything behind your back, make you do a good deed that you hadn’t willingly agreed to.
