We would have healed Babylon, but she was not to be healed. Abandon her and let each [captive] return to his own country, For her guilt and judgment have reached to heaven And are lifted up to the very skies.
The foreigners answered, “We have already tried to treat Babylon’s wounds, but they would not heal. Come on, let’s all go home to our own countries. Nothing is left in Babylonia; everything is destroyed.”
We tried to heal Babylon, but she cannot be healed. So let us leave her, and let each of us go to our own country. God in heaven will decide Babylon’s punishment. He will decide what will happen to Babylon.
“Foreigners in Babylon say, ‘We tried to heal Babylon, but she cannot be healed. So let us leave her and each go to his own country [C after the fall of Babylon, the Persians allowed the exiled people to return to their own lands; Ezra 1]. Babylon’s ·punishment [judgment] ·is as high as [reaches; touches] the ·sky [heavens]; it ·reaches [L lifts up] to the ·clouds [or skies].’
“Foreigners in Babylon say, ‘We tried to heal Babylon. But she cannot be healed. So let us leave her and each go to his own country. Babylon’s guilt is as high as the clouds. Babylon’s guilt reaches to the sky.’
“Foreigners in Babylon say, ‘We tried to heal Babylon, but she cannot be healed. So let us leave her and each go to his own country. Babylon’s punishment is as high as the sky; it reaches to the clouds.’
Foreigners living there will say, ‘We tried to heal her, but she could not be healed. Let’s leave Babylonia and each go back to his own country. For judgment on her will be vast in its proportions. It will be like it is piled up to heaven, stacked up into the clouds.’
“The nations say, ‘We would have healed Babylon. But it can’t be healed. So let’s leave it. Let’s each go to our own land. Babylon’s sins reach all the way to the skies. They rise up as high as the heavens.’
We would have helped her if we could, but nothing can save her now. Let her go; abandon her. Return now to your own land. For her punishment reaches to the heavens; it is so great it cannot be measured.
Exiles: We would like to have healed Babylon, but she was beyond our help. It is time to leave her and go home before it is too late, before we get caught in her coming judgment. Look, even now it fills the skies, rising up to the clouds.
We healed Babylon, and it is not made whole; forsake we it and go we each into his land; for the doom thereof came till to heavens, and is raised [up] till to [the] clouds. (We would have healed Babylon, but it would not be made whole; leave we it and go we each into his own land; for its doom, or its judgement, came unto the heavens, and is raised up unto the clouds.)
