Ecclesiastes 5:16
And this also is a sore evil: that in all ways as he came, so shall he go. And what profit hath he that hath labored for the wind?
And this also is a grievous evil, that in all points as he came, so shall he go: and what profit hath he that he laboreth for the wind?
This also is a grievous evil—exactly as he was born, so he shall die. So what advantage has he who labors for the wind?
And this also is a serious and severe evil—that in all points as he came, so shall he go; and what gain has he who labors for the wind?
And this also is a sore evil, that in all points as he came, so shall he go: and what profit hath he that hath laboured for the wind?
This too is a sickening tragedy: they must pass on just as they arrived. What then do they gain from working so hard for wind?
All his life he eats in darkness, in frustration, in sickness and in anger.
That’s terribly unfair. They leave the world just as they came into it. They gained nothing from running after the wind.
And this also is a grievous evil, that in all points as he came so doth he go away, and what profit hath he, in having laboured for the wind?
All the days of his life he eateth in darkness, and in many cares, and in misery, and sorrow.
It is very sad that people leave the world just as they came. So what does a person gain from “trying to catch the wind”?
This also is a grievous evil: just as he came, so shall he go, and what gain is there to him who toils for the wind?
This also is a grievous evil: just as he came, so shall he go, and what gain is there to him who toils for the wind?
This, too, is ·real misery [a sickening evil]: They leave just as they came. So what do they ·gain [profit] from chasing the wind?
Also all his days he eateth in darkness with much grief, and in his sorrow and anger.
This also is a painful tragedy: They leave exactly as they came. What advantage do they gain from working so hard for the wind?
It isn't right! We go just as we came. We labor, trying to catch the wind, and what do we get?
This too is a sickening tragedy: exactly as he comes, so he will go. What does the one gain who struggles for the wind?
This, too, is unfair: He leaves exactly as he came. So what does he gain from chasing the wind?
This is also a painful tragedy: However a person comes, he also departs; so what does he gain as he labors after the wind?
And this also is a sore evil; that in all points as he came, so shall he go; and what profit has he that has laboured for the wind?
And this also is a sore evil, that in all points as he came, so shall he go: and what profit hath he that hath laboured for the wind?
And this also is a sore evil, that in all points as he came, so shall he go: and what profit hath he that hath laboured for the wind?
This also is a grievous illness. Exactly as he came, so he will go. What profit does he gain for all his toil for the wind?
This, as I said, is a very serious problem, for all his hard work has been for nothing; he has been working for the wind. It is all swept away.
Here’s a piece of bad luck I’ve seen happen: A man hoards far more wealth than is good for him And then loses it all in a bad business deal. He fathered a child but hasn’t a cent left to give him. He arrived naked from the womb of his mother; He’ll leave in the same condition—with nothing. This is bad luck, for sure—naked he came, naked he went. So what was the point of working for a salary of smoke? All for a miserable life spent in the dark?
This also is a grievous evil: Just as he came, so shall he go. And what profit is there to him who toils for the wind?
This also is a painful tragedy: They leave exactly as they came. What advantage do they gain from working so hard for the wind?
All their days they eat in gloom with great vexation, sickness and resentment.
This also is a grievous evil—exactly as a man is born, thus will he die. So what is the advantage to him who toils for the wind?
This, too, is real misery: They leave just as they came. So what do they gain from chasing the wind?
This is another misfortune: Just as he came, so will he go. What did he gain from toiling for the wind?
Here’s something else that is very evil. Everyone is born, and everyone dies. And what do they get for their work? Nothing. It’s like working for the wind.
This too is a grievous evil: As everyone comes, so they depart, and what do they gain, since they toil for the wind?
This too is a grievous evil: as everyone comes, so they depart, and what do they gain, since they toil for the wind?
And this also is a severe evil— Just exactly as he came, so shall he go. And what profit has he who has labored for the wind?
This also is very wrong: As a man is born, this is the way he will leave. So what does the man get who works for the wind?
And this, too, is a very serious problem. People leave this world no better off than when they came. All their hard work is for nothing—like working for the wind.
This also is a grievous ill: just as they came, so shall they go; and what gain do they have from toiling for the wind?
This also is a grievous ill: just as they came, so shall they go; and what gain do they have from toiling for the wind?
This also is a grievous ill: just as they came, so shall they go; and what gain do they have from toiling for the wind?
This also is a grievous ill: just as they came, so shall they go; and what gain do they have from toiling for the wind?
And this also is a grievous evil, that in every respect as he came, just so shall he go; and what profit hath he that hath toiled for the ruach (wind)?
This also is a grievous evil: just as he came, so shall he go; and what gain has he that he toiled for the wind,
This also is a grievous evil: just as he came, so shall he go; and what gain has he that he toiled for the wind,
So, all his days he eats in darkness, and he has much grief, sickness, and humiliation.
Here, too, is another grave evil: all of us, no matter who we are, will depart this world exactly the same way as we came into it. So what good does it do to continue to toil after the wind?
This also is a grievous evil, that in all points as he came, so shall he go. And what profit does he have who labors for the wind?
Utterly it is a wretched sickness; as he came, so he shall turn again. What profiteth it to him, that he travailed into the wind? (Yea, it is utterly a wretched sickness; as he came, so he shall return. What hath it profited him? he hath only laboured for the wind!)
And this also [is] a painful evil, just as he came, so he goeth, and what advantage [is] to him who laboureth for wind?
