17:14 his throne shall be established forever. God designated David’s line as the permanent dynasty over His people. When David’s descendants failed they were chastised (2 Sam. 7:14), but God always raised up another son of David to continue the line. This promise gave hope to the community following the exile of the sixth century b.c., and came to fulfillment in Jesus, who reigns on the throne of David forever (vv. 7–14 note; 2 Chr. 21:7).
