14:8–12 David’s victory over the Philistines contrasts with Saul’s defeat (10:1–7). David inquired of the Lord (14:10, 14); Saul had consulted a medium (10:13). This event also contrasts with David’s failed attempt to retrieve the ark (13:1–14). While David had been angered because the Lord had “broken out” against Uzzah (13:11), he now declares that “God has broken through” against the Philistines (14:11).
