The text of Malachi is in good Hebrew and is well preserved. The book is a unit and was written by one author (Verhoef, 168). Some see evidences of editorial arrangement and additions, such as the superscription. It is sometimes affirmed that 4:4-6 is a later addition of an editor who wished to include a parting admonition, since this is the last of the writings in the Book of the Twelve as well as the final book in that section of the Hebrew canon known as the Prophets. Of course, it is also the final book in the English OT. The right of this book to a place in the canon is not disputed. The conviction rose that with the death of the last prophets, Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi, the Holy Spirit was withdrawn from Israel (Margolius, 23).
