II. The Issue Of The Letter (Vv.5-8)

This exhortation addresses a reverse issue from that in 2 John, which forbids hospitality to the false teachers (see notes on 2 John); in 3 John the author urges that hospitality be extended to traveling teachers of the truth. Evidently, there had been some trouble in the church caused by a member named Diotrephes (see v.9) who had been instrumental in keeping such traveling preachers from exercising their ministry to the congregation. John wanted Gaius to set an example of hospitality to the rest of the people.
