Throughout the whole of the Wesleyan tradition, Scripture has maintained its primary role in the reflection upon and in the formulation of right doctrines, right hearts, and right actions. The primacy of Scripture, however, has not precluded the integration of insights from tradition, reason, and experience as genuine, albeit secondary, sources of religious authority. The result has been a tradition that creatively holds in tension elements of Christianity often left in isolation. These are some of the elements that Wesleyanism seeks to hold in balance: primacy of scriptural authority and the complementary authorities of tradition, reason, and experience; standards of doctrine and doctrinal toleration, reflective of Wesley's emphasis upon a catholic spirit; formal characteristics of religion and a religion of the heart; and evangelical and social concern for the wellbeing of all people. These elements represent only a few of the ways in which Wesleyans affirm the place and function of Scripture, but they represent distinctive aspects of the tradition.
