7. Feast of Tabernacles (23:33-44)

This festival begins on the fifteenth day of the seventh month and lasts for seven days (v.34). It is a pilgrimage festival, one in which all males from across Israel are to appear. The designation “Feast of Booths” or “Feast of Tabernacles” comes from the requirement that all Israelites live in booths made of tree branches for the seven days of the festival (v.42). The Feast of Tabernacles is to be observed with sacrifices offered on each of the seven days and by assemblies on the first and last days. This festival is intended to remind the Israelites of God’s graciousness in sustaining them when they lived in booths in the wilderness after their deliverance from Egypt.
