Version
Jeremiah 8:8-9:26

Punishment for Judah’s Leaders

“How can you claim, ‘We are wise;
the law of the Lord is with us’?
In fact, the lying pen of scribes(A)
has produced falsehood.
The wise will be put to shame;
they will be dismayed and snared.
They have rejected the word of the Lord,
so what wisdom do they really have?
10 Therefore, I will give(B) their wives to other men,
their fields to new occupants,
for from the least to the greatest,
everyone is making profit dishonestly.
From prophet to priest,
everyone deals falsely.
11 They have treated superficially the brokenness
of My dear[a] people,
claiming, ‘Peace, peace,’
when there is no peace.
12 Were they ashamed when they acted so abhorrently?
They weren’t at all ashamed.
They can no longer feel humiliation.
Therefore, they will fall among the fallen.
When I punish them, they will collapse,”(C)
says the Lord.

13 I will gather them and bring them to an end.[b](D)
This is the Lord’s declaration.
There will be no grapes on the vine,
no figs on the fig tree,
and even the leaf will wither.
Whatever I have given them will be lost to them.

God’s People Unrepentant

14 Why are we just sitting here?
Gather together; let us enter the fortified cities
and perish there,[c]
for the Lord our God has destroyed[d] us.
He has given us poisoned water to drink,(E)
because we have sinned against the Lord.
15 We hoped for peace, but there was nothing good;
for a time of healing, but there was only terror.(F)

16 From Dan the snorting of horses is heard.
At the sound of the neighing of mighty steeds,(G)
the whole land quakes.
They come to devour the land and everything in it,
the city and all its residents.
17 Indeed, I am about to send snakes among you,
poisonous vipers(H) that cannot be charmed.(I)
They will bite you.
This is the Lord’s declaration.

Lament over Judah

18 My joy has flown away;
grief has settled on me.
My heart is sick.(J)
19 Listen—the cry of my dear[e] people
from a far away land,
“Is the Lord no longer in Zion,(K)
her King not within her?”
Why have they provoked me to anger
with their carved images,
with their worthless foreign idols?(L)
20 Harvest has passed, summer has ended,
but we have not been saved.
21 I am broken by the brokenness
of my dear[f] people.(M)
I mourn; horror has taken hold of me.
22 Is there no balm in Gilead?(N)
Is there no physician there?
So why has the healing of my dear[g] people
not come about?

[h]If my head were a spring of water,
my eyes a fountain of tears,
I would weep day and night(O)
over the slain of my dear[i] people.
[j]If only I had a traveler’s lodging place
in the wilderness,
I would abandon my people
and depart from them,
for they are all adulterers,(P)
a solemn assembly of treacherous people.(Q)

They bent their tongues like their bows;
lies and not faithfulness prevail in the land,
for they proceed from one evil to another,
and they do not take Me into account.(R)
This is the Lord’s declaration.

Imminent Ruin and Exile

Everyone has to be on guard against his friend.
Don’t trust any brother,
for every brother will certainly deceive,
and every friend spread slander.(S)
Each one betrays his friend;
no one tells the truth.
They have taught their tongues to speak lies;
they wear themselves out doing wrong.
You live in a world of deception.[k]
In their deception they refuse to know Me.(T)
This is the Lord’s declaration.

Therefore, this is what the Lord of Hosts says:

I am about to refine them and test them,(U)
for what else can I do
because of My dear[l] people?[m]
Their tongues are deadly arrows—
they speak deception.(V)
With his mouth
a man speaks peaceably with his friend,
but inwardly he sets up an ambush.
Should I not punish them for these things?
This is the Lord’s declaration.
Should I not avenge Myself(W)
on such a nation as this?

10 I will raise weeping and a lament
over the mountains,
a dirge over the wilderness grazing land,
for they have been so scorched
that no one passes through.
The sound of cattle is no longer heard.
From the birds of the sky to the animals,(X)
everything has fled—they have gone away.
11 I will make Jerusalem a heap of rubble,(Y)
a jackals’ den.(Z)
I will make the cities of Judah a desolation,
an uninhabited place.

12 Who is the man wise enough to understand this?(AA) Who has the Lord spoken to, that he may explain it? Why is the land destroyed and scorched like a wilderness, so no one can pass through?

13 The Lord said, “It is because they abandoned My instruction(AB) that I set in front of them and did not obey My voice or walk according to it. 14 Instead, they followed the stubbornness of their hearts(AC) and followed after the Baals as their fathers taught them.”(AD) 15 Therefore, this is what the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: “I am about to feed this people wormwood(AE) and give them poisonous water to drink.(AF) 16 I will scatter them among the nations(AG) that they and their fathers have not known. I will send a sword after them until I have finished them off.”

Mourning over Judah

17 This is what the Lord of Hosts says:

Consider, and summon the women who mourn;(AH)
send for the skillful women.
18 Let them come quickly to raise a lament over us
so that our eyes may overflow with tears,
our eyelids soaked with weeping.
19 For a sound of lamentation is heard from Zion:
How devastated we are.
We are greatly ashamed,(AI)
for we have abandoned the land;
our dwellings have been torn down.

20 Now hear the word of the Lord, you women.
Pay attention to[n] the word of His mouth.
Teach your daughters a lament
and one another a dirge,
21 for Death(AJ) has climbed through our windows;
it has entered our fortresses,
cutting off children from the streets,
young men from the squares.

22 Speak as follows:

This is what the Lord says:

Human corpses will fall
like manure on the surface of the field,
like newly cut grain(AK) after the reaper
with no one to gather it.

Boast in the Lord

23 This is what the Lord says:

The wise man must not boast in his wisdom;
the strong man must not boast in his strength;
the wealthy man must not boast in his wealth.
24 But the one who boasts should boast in this,
that he understands and knows Me(AL)
that I am Yahweh, showing faithful love,
justice, and righteousness on the earth,
for I delight in these things.
This is the Lord’s declaration.

25 “The days are coming”—the Lord’s declaration—“when I will punish all the circumcised yet uncircumcised:(AM) 26 Egypt, Judah, Edom, the Ammonites, Moab, and all the inhabitants of the desert who clip the hair on their temples.[o] All these nations are uncircumcised, and the whole house of Israel is uncircumcised in heart.”(AN)

Colossians 3:1-17

The Life of the New Man

So if you have been raised with the Messiah, seek what is above, where the Messiah is, seated at the right hand of God.(A) Set your minds on what is above, not on what is on the earth.(B) For you have died,(C) and your life is hidden with the Messiah in God. When the Messiah, who is your[a] life, is revealed,(D) then you also will be revealed with Him in glory.(E)

Therefore, put to death what belongs to your worldly nature:[b] sexual immorality, impurity,(F) lust,(G) evil desire, and greed,(H) which is idolatry.(I) Because of these, God’s wrath(J) comes on the disobedient,[c] and you once walked in these things when you were living(K) in them. But now you must also put away(L) all the following: anger,(M) wrath,(N) malice,(O) slander,(P) and filthy language from your mouth.(Q) Do not lie(R) to one another, since you have put off(S) the old self[d](T) with its practices 10 and have put on(U) the new self. You are being renewed in knowledge according to the image of your[e] Creator.(V) 11 In Christ[f] there is not Greek and Jew, circumcision and uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian,[g] slave and free; but Christ is all and in all.(W)

The Christian Life

12 Therefore, God’s chosen ones, holy and loved,(X) put on heartfelt compassion, kindness,(Y) humility,(Z) gentleness,(AA) and patience,(AB) 13 accepting one another and forgiving one another if anyone has a complaint against another. Just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you must also forgive.(AC) 14 Above all, put on love—the perfect bond of unity. 15 And let the peace of the Messiah, to which you were also called(AD) in one body, control your hearts. Be thankful. 16 Let the message about the Messiah dwell richly among you, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, and singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, with gratitude in your hearts to God. 17 And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name(AE) of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

Psalm 78:32-55

32 Despite all this, they kept sinning
and did not believe His wonderful works.(A)
33 He made their days end in futility,
their years in sudden disaster.(B)
34 When He killed some of them,
the rest began to seek Him;
they repented and searched for God.(C)
35 They remembered that God was their rock,
the Most High God, their Redeemer.(D)
36 But they deceived Him with their mouths,
they lied to Him with their tongues,(E)
37 their hearts were insincere toward Him,
and they were unfaithful to His covenant.(F)
38 Yet He was compassionate;
He atoned for[a] their guilt
and did not destroy them.
He often turned His anger aside
and did not unleash[b] all His wrath.(G)
39 He remembered that they were only flesh,
a wind that passes and does not return.(H)

40 How often they rebelled against Him
in the wilderness
and grieved Him in the desert.
41 They constantly tested God(I)
and provoked the Holy One of Israel.(J)
42 They did not remember His power shown
on the day He redeemed them from the foe,(K)
43 when He performed His miraculous signs in Egypt
and His wonders in the region of Zoan.(L)
44 He turned their rivers into blood,
and they could not drink from their streams.(M)
45 He sent among them swarms of flies,(N)
which fed on them,
and frogs, which devastated them.(O)
46 He gave their crops to the caterpillar
and the fruit of their labor to the locust.(P)
47 He killed their vines with hail
and their sycamore fig trees with a flood.
48 He handed over their livestock to hail
and their cattle to lightning bolts.(Q)
49 He sent His burning anger against them:
fury, indignation, and calamity—
a band of deadly messengers.[c](R)
50 He cleared a path for His anger.
He did not spare them from death
but delivered their lives to the plague.(S)
51 He struck all the firstborn(T) in Egypt,
the first progeny of the tents of Ham.[d](U)
52 He led His people out like sheep
and guided them like a flock in the wilderness.(V)
53 He led them safely, and they were not afraid;
but the sea covered their enemies.(W)
54 He brought them to His holy land,
to the mountain His right hand acquired.(X)
55 He drove out nations before them.(Y)
He apportioned their inheritance by lot
and settled the tribes of Israel in their tents.(Z)

Proverbs 24:27

27 Complete your outdoor work, and prepare your field;(A)
afterward, build your house.
