Psalm 109-134

Help Me, O Lord My God

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.

109 (A)Be not silent, O (B)God of my praise!
For wicked and (C)deceitful mouths are opened against me,
    speaking against me with lying tongues.
They encircle me with words of hate,
    and attack me (D)without cause.
In return for my love they (E)accuse me,
    but I (F)give myself to prayer.[a]
So they (G)reward me evil for good,
    and hatred for my love.

(H)Appoint a wicked man (I)against him;
    let an accuser stand (J)at his right hand.
When he is tried, let him come forth guilty;
    let his (K)prayer be counted as sin!
May his (L)days be few;
    may (M)another take his (N)office!
May his (O)children be fatherless
    and his wife a widow!
10 May his children (P)wander about and beg,
    (Q)seeking food far from the ruins they inhabit!
11 May (R)the creditor seize all that he has;
    may (S)strangers plunder the fruits of his toil!
12 Let there be none to (T)extend kindness to him,
    nor any to (U)pity his fatherless children!
13 May his (V)posterity be cut off;
    may his (W)name be blotted out in the second generation!
14 May (X)the iniquity of his fathers be remembered before the Lord,
    and let not the sin of his mother be (Y)blotted out!
15 (Z)Let them be before the Lord continually,
    that he may (AA)cut off the memory of them from the earth!

16 For he did not remember to show kindness,
    but pursued (AB)the poor and needy
    and (AC)the brokenhearted, to put them to death.
17 (AD)He loved to curse; let curses come[b] upon him!
    He did not delight in blessing; may it be far[c] from him!
18 He (AE)clothed himself with cursing as his coat;
    may it (AF)soak[d] into his body like water,
    like oil into his bones!
19 May it be like a garment that he wraps around him,
    like a belt that he puts on every day!
20 May this be the reward of my (AG)accusers from the Lord,
    of those who speak evil against my life!

21 But you, O God my Lord,
    deal on my behalf (AH)for your name's sake;
    because your (AI)steadfast love is good, deliver me!
22 For I am (AJ)poor and needy,
    and my heart is stricken within me.
23 I am gone like (AK)a shadow at evening;
    I am (AL)shaken off like a locust.
24 My knees are weak (AM)through fasting;
    my (AN)body has become gaunt, with no fat.
25 I am (AO)an object of scorn to my accusers;
    when they see me, they (AP)wag their heads.

26 (AQ)Help me, O Lord my God!
    Save me according to your steadfast love!
27 Let them (AR)know that this is your hand;
    you, O Lord, have done it!
28 (AS)Let them curse, but you will bless!
    They arise and are put to shame, but (AT)your servant will be glad!
29 May my accusers be (AU)clothed with dishonor;
    may they (AV)be wrapped in their own shame as in a cloak!

30 With my mouth I will give great thanks to the Lord;
    I will (AW)praise him in the midst of the throng.
31 For he stands (AX)at the right hand of the needy one,
    to save him from those who condemn his soul to death.

Sit at My Right Hand

A Psalm of David.

110 (AY)The Lord says to my Lord:
    (AZ)“Sit at my right hand,
(BA)until I make your enemies your (BB)footstool.”

The Lord sends forth (BC)from Zion
    (BD)your mighty scepter.
    (BE)Rule in the midst of your enemies!
(BF)Your people will (BG)offer themselves freely
    on the day of your (BH)power,[e]
    in (BI)holy garments;[f]
from the womb of the morning,
    the dew of your youth will be yours.[g]
(BJ)The Lord has (BK)sworn
    and will (BL)not change his mind,
(BM)“You are (BN)a priest (BO)forever
    after the order of (BP)Melchizedek.”

The Lord is at your (BQ)right hand;
    he will (BR)shatter kings on (BS)the day of his wrath.
He will (BT)execute judgment among the nations,
    (BU)filling them with corpses;
he will (BV)shatter chiefs[h]
    over the wide earth.
He will (BW)drink from the brook by the way;
    therefore he will lift up his head.

Great Are the Lord's Works

111 [i] (BX)Praise the Lord!
I (BY)will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart,
    in the company of (BZ)the upright, in the congregation.
Great are the (CA)works of the Lord,
    (CB)studied by all who delight in them.
(CC)Full of splendor and majesty is his work,
    and his (CD)righteousness endures forever.
He has (CE)caused his wondrous works to be remembered;
    the Lord is gracious and merciful.
He provides food for those who fear him;
    he (CF)remembers his covenant forever.
He has shown his people the power of his works,
    in giving them the inheritance of the nations.
The works of his hands are faithful and just;
    all his precepts are (CG)trustworthy;
they are (CH)established forever and ever,
    to be performed with (CI)faithfulness and uprightness.
He sent (CJ)redemption to his people;
    he has (CK)commanded his covenant forever.
    (CL)Holy and awesome is his name!
10 (CM)The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;
    all those who practice it have (CN)a good understanding.
    His (CO)praise endures forever!

The Righteous Will Never Be Moved

112 [j] (CP)Praise the Lord!
(CQ)Blessed is the man who fears the Lord,
    who (CR)greatly delights in his commandments!
His (CS)offspring will be mighty in the land;
    (CT)the generation of the upright will be blessed.
(CU)Wealth and riches are in his house,
    and his (CV)righteousness endures forever.
Light dawns in the darkness (CW)for the upright;
    he is gracious, merciful, and (CX)righteous.
It is well with the man who (CY)deals generously and lends;
    who conducts his affairs with justice.
For the righteous will (CZ)never be moved;
    (DA)he will be remembered forever.
He is not (DB)afraid of bad news;
    his (DC)heart is firm, (DD)trusting in the Lord.
His heart is steady;[k] he will not be afraid,
    until he looks in triumph on his adversaries.
He has (DE)distributed freely; he has given to the poor;
    his righteousness endures forever;
    his (DF)horn is exalted in honor.
10 The wicked man sees it and is angry;
    he (DG)gnashes his teeth and (DH)melts away;
    (DI)the desire of the wicked will perish!

Who Is like the Lord Our God?

113 (DJ)Praise the Lord!
(DK)Praise, O (DL)servants of the Lord,
    praise the name of the Lord!

(DM)Blessed be the name of the Lord
    from this time forth and forevermore!
(DN)From the rising of the sun to its setting,
    (DO)the name of the Lord is (DP)to be praised!

The Lord is (DQ)high above all nations,
    and his (DR)glory above the heavens!
(DS)Who is like the Lord our God,
    who is seated on high,
who (DT)looks far down
    on the heavens and the earth?
He (DU)raises the poor from the dust
    and lifts the needy from the ash heap,
to make them (DV)sit with princes,
    with the princes of his people.
He (DW)gives the barren woman a home,
    making her the joyous mother of children.
(DX)Praise the Lord!

Tremble at the Presence of the Lord

114 When (DY)Israel went out from Egypt,
    the house of Jacob from (DZ)a people of strange language,
Judah became his (EA)sanctuary,
    Israel his dominion.

(EB)The sea looked and fled;
    (EC)Jordan turned back.
(ED)The mountains skipped like rams,
    the hills like lambs.

What (EE)ails you, O sea, that you flee?
    O Jordan, that you turn back?
O mountains, that you skip like rams?
    O hills, like lambs?

(EF)Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord,
    at the presence of the God of Jacob,
who turns (EG)the rock into (EH)a pool of water,
    (EI)the flint into a spring of water.

To Your Name Give Glory

115 (EJ)Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name give glory,
    (EK)for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness!

Why should the nations say,
    (EL)“Where is their God?”
(EM)Our God is in the heavens;
    (EN)he does all that he pleases.

(EO)Their idols are silver and gold,
    (EP)the work of human hands.
They have mouths, (EQ)but do not speak;
    eyes, but do not see.
They have ears, but do not hear;
    noses, but do not smell.
They have hands, but do not feel;
    feet, but do not walk;
    and they do not make a sound in their throat.
(ER)Those who make them become like them;
    so do all who trust in them.

O (ES)Israel,[l] (ET)trust in the Lord!
    He is their (EU)help and their shield.
10 O (EV)house of Aaron, trust in the Lord!
    He is their help and (EW)their shield.
11 You (EX)who fear the Lord, trust in the Lord!
    He is their help and their shield.

12 The Lord has remembered us; he will bless us;
    he will bless (EY)the house of Israel;
    he will bless (EZ)the house of Aaron;
13 he will (FA)bless those who fear the Lord,
    (FB)both the small and the great.

14 May the Lord (FC)give you increase,
    you and your children!
15 May (FD)you be blessed by the Lord,
    (FE)who made heaven and earth!

16 The heavens are the Lord's heavens,
    but the earth he has given to the children of man.
17 (FF)The dead do not praise the Lord,
    nor do any who go down into (FG)silence.
18 But (FH)we will bless the Lord
    from this time forth and forevermore.
(FI)Praise the Lord!

I Love the Lord

116 I (FJ)love the Lord, because he has (FK)heard
    my voice and my pleas for mercy.
Because he (FL)inclined his ear to me,
    therefore I will call on him as long as I live.
(FM)The snares of death encompassed me;
    the pangs of Sheol laid hold on me;
    I suffered distress and anguish.
Then (FN)I called on the name of the Lord:
    “O Lord, I pray, deliver my soul!”

(FO)Gracious is the Lord, and (FP)righteous;
    our God is (FQ)merciful.
The Lord preserves (FR)the simple;
    when (FS)I was brought low, he saved me.
Return, O my soul, to your (FT)rest;
    for the Lord has (FU)dealt bountifully with you.

For (FV)you have delivered my soul from death,
    my eyes from tears,
    my feet from stumbling;
I will walk before the Lord
    (FW)in the land of the living.

10 (FX)I believed, (FY)even when[m] I spoke:
    “I am greatly afflicted”;
11 (FZ)I said in my alarm,
    (GA)“All mankind are liars.”

12 What shall I (GB)render to the Lord
    for all his benefits to me?
13 I will lift up (GC)the cup of salvation
    and (GD)call on the name of the Lord,
14 I will (GE)pay my vows to the Lord
    in the presence of all his people.

15 (GF)Precious in the sight of the Lord
    is the death of his (GG)saints.
16 O Lord, I am your (GH)servant;
    I am your servant, (GI)the son of your maidservant.
    You have (GJ)loosed my bonds.
17 I will (GK)offer to you the sacrifice of thanksgiving
    and (GL)call on the name of the Lord.
18 I will (GM)pay my vows to the Lord
    in the presence of all his people,
19 in (GN)the courts of the house of the Lord,
    in your midst, O Jerusalem.
(GO)Praise the Lord!

The Lord's Faithfulness Endures Forever

117 (GP)Praise the Lord, all nations!
    Extol him, all peoples!
For (GQ)great is his steadfast love toward us,
    and (GR)the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever.
(GS)Praise the Lord!

His Steadfast Love Endures Forever

118 (GT)Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
    for his steadfast love endures forever!

(GU)Let Israel say,
    “His steadfast love endures forever.”
(GV)Let the house of Aaron say,
    “His steadfast love endures forever.”
(GW)Let those who fear the Lord say,
    “His steadfast love endures forever.”

(GX)Out of my distress I (GY)called on the Lord;
    the Lord answered me and set me (GZ)free.
(HA)The Lord is on my side; (HB)I will not fear.
    What can man do to me?
(HC)The Lord is on my side as my helper;
    I shall (HD)look in triumph on those who hate me.

(HE)It is better to take refuge in the Lord
    (HF)than to trust in man.
It is better to take refuge in the Lord
    (HG)than to trust in princes.

10 (HH)All nations surrounded me;
    in the name of the Lord I cut them off!
11 They surrounded me, surrounded me on every side;
    in the name of the Lord I cut them off!
12 (HI)They surrounded me like bees;
    they went out like (HJ)a fire among thorns;
    in the name of the Lord I cut them off!
13 I was (HK)pushed hard,[n] so that I was falling,
    but the Lord helped me.

14 The Lord is my strength and my song;
    (HL)he has become my salvation.
15 Glad songs of salvation
    are in the tents of the righteous:
(HM)“The right hand of the Lord (HN)does valiantly,
16     the right hand of the Lord exalts,
    the right hand of the Lord (HO)does valiantly!”

17 (HP)I shall not die, but I shall live,
    and (HQ)recount the deeds of the Lord.
18 The Lord has (HR)disciplined me severely,
    but he has not given me over to death.

19 (HS)Open to me the gates of righteousness,
    that I may enter through them
    and give thanks to the Lord.
20 This is the gate of the Lord;
    (HT)the righteous shall enter through it.
21 I thank you that (HU)you have answered me
    (HV)and have become my salvation.
22 (HW)The stone that the builders rejected
    has become the cornerstone.[o]
23 This is the Lord's doing;
    it is marvelous in our eyes.
24 This is the day that the Lord has made;
    let us rejoice and be glad in it.

25 Save us, we pray, O Lord!
    O Lord, we pray, give us success!

26 (HX)Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!
    We (HY)bless you from the house of the Lord.
27 The Lord is God,
    and he has made (HZ)his light to shine upon us.
Bind the festal sacrifice with cords,
    up to (IA)the horns of the altar!

28 You are my God, and I will give thanks to you;
    you are my God; I will (IB)extol you.
29 (IC)Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
    for his steadfast love endures forever!

Your Word Is a Lamp to My Feet

Aleph

119 [p] Blessed are those whose (ID)way is blameless,
    who (IE)walk in the law of the Lord!
Blessed are those who (IF)keep his (IG)testimonies,
    who (IH)seek him with their whole heart,
who also (II)do no wrong,
    but walk in his ways!
You have commanded your (IJ)precepts
    to be kept diligently.
Oh that my ways may (IK)be steadfast
    in keeping your statutes!
(IL)Then I shall not be put to shame,
    having my eyes fixed on all your commandments.
I will praise you with an upright heart,
    when I learn (IM)your righteous rules.[q]
I will keep your statutes;
    (IN)do not utterly forsake me!

Beth

How can (IO)a young man keep his way pure?
    By guarding it according to your word.
10 (IP)With my whole heart I seek you;
    let me not (IQ)wander from your commandments!
11 I have (IR)stored up your word in my heart,
    that I might not sin against you.
12 Blessed are you, O Lord;
    (IS)teach me your statutes!
13 With my lips I (IT)declare
    all the rules[r] of your mouth.
14 In the way of your testimonies I (IU)delight
    as much as in all (IV)riches.
15 I will (IW)meditate on your precepts
    and fix my eyes on your (IX)ways.
16 I will (IY)delight in your statutes;
    I will not forget your word.

Gimel

17 (IZ)Deal bountifully with your servant,
    (JA)that I may live and keep your word.
18 Open my eyes, that I may behold
    wondrous things out of your law.
19 I am (JB)a sojourner on the earth;
    (JC)hide not your commandments from me!
20 My soul is consumed with (JD)longing
    for your rules[s] at all times.
21 You rebuke (JE)the insolent, (JF)accursed ones,
    who (JG)wander from your commandments.
22 Take away from me (JH)scorn and contempt,
    (JI)for I have kept your testimonies.
23 Even though (JJ)princes sit plotting against me,
    your servant will (JK)meditate on your statutes.
24 Your testimonies are my (JL)delight;
    they are my (JM)counselors.

Daleth

25 (JN)My soul clings to the dust;
    (JO)give me life (JP)according to your word!
26 When (JQ)I told of my ways, you answered me;
    (JR)teach me your statutes!
27 (JS)Make me understand the way of your precepts,
    and I will (JT)meditate on your wondrous works.
28 (JU)My soul melts away for sorrow;
    strengthen me according to your word!
29 Put false ways far from me
    and graciously (JV)teach me your law!
30 I have chosen the way of faithfulness;
    I (JW)set your rules before me.
31 I cling to your testimonies, O Lord;
    (JX)let me not be put to shame!
32 I will run in the way of your commandments
    when you (JY)enlarge my heart![t]

He

33 (JZ)Teach me, O Lord, the way of your statutes;
    and I will keep it (KA)to the end.[u]
34 (KB)Give me understanding, that I may keep your law
    and observe it with my whole heart.
35 (KC)Lead me in the path of your commandments,
    for I (KD)delight in it.
36 (KE)Incline my heart to your testimonies,
    and not to (KF)selfish gain!
37 (KG)Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things;
    and (KH)give me life in your ways.
38 (KI)Confirm to your servant your promise,
    (KJ)that you may be feared.
39 Turn away the (KK)reproach that I dread,
    for your rules are good.
40 Behold, I (KL)long for your precepts;
    (KM)in your righteousness give me life!

Waw

41 Let your (KN)steadfast love come to me, O Lord,
    your salvation (KO)according to your promise;
42 then (KP)shall I have an answer for him (KQ)who taunts me,
    for I trust in your word.
43 And take not the word of truth utterly out of my mouth,
    for my (KR)hope is in your rules.
44 I will keep your law continually,
    forever and ever,
45 and I shall walk (KS)in a wide place,
    for I have (KT)sought your precepts.
46 I will also speak of your testimonies (KU)before kings
    and shall not be put to shame,
47 for I (KV)find my delight in your commandments,
    which I love.
48 I will (KW)lift up my hands toward your commandments, which I love,
    and I will (KX)meditate on your statutes.

Zayin

49 Remember (KY)your word to your servant,
    in which you have made me (KZ)hope.
50 This is (LA)my comfort in my affliction,
    that your promise (LB)gives me life.
51 (LC)The insolent utterly deride me,
    but I do not (LD)turn away from your law.
52 When I think of your rules from of old,
    I take comfort, O Lord.
53 (LE)Hot indignation seizes me because of the wicked,
    who forsake your law.
54 Your statutes have been my songs
    in the house of my (LF)sojourning.
55 I (LG)remember your name in the night, O Lord,
    and keep your law.
56 This blessing has fallen to me,
    that (LH)I have kept your precepts.

Heth

57 (LI)The Lord is my portion;
    I promise to keep your words.
58 I (LJ)entreat your favor with all my heart;
    be gracious to me (LK)according to your promise.

    I turn my feet to your testimonies;
60 I hasten and do not delay
    to keep your commandments.
61 Though (LM)the cords of the wicked ensnare me,
    I do not (LN)forget your law.
62 At (LO)midnight I rise to praise you,
    because of your (LP)righteous rules.
63 (LQ)I am a companion of all who fear you,
    of those who keep your precepts.
64 (LR)The earth, O Lord, is full of your steadfast love;
    (LS)teach me your statutes!

Teth

65 You have dealt well with your servant,
    O Lord, (LT)according to your word.
66 Teach me (LU)good judgment and knowledge,
    for I believe in your commandments.
67 (LV)Before I was afflicted I went astray,
    but now I keep your word.
68 (LW)You are good and do good;
    (LX)teach me your statutes.
69 (LY)The insolent (LZ)smear me with lies,
    but with my whole heart I (MA)keep your precepts;
70 their heart is unfeeling (MB)like fat,
    but I (MC)delight in your law.
71 It is (MD)good for me that I was afflicted,
    that I might learn your statutes.
72 (ME)The law of your mouth is better to me
    than thousands of gold and silver pieces.

Yodh

73 (MF)Your hands have made and fashioned me;
    (MG)give me understanding that I may learn your commandments.
74 Those who fear you shall see me and (MH)rejoice,
    because I have (MI)hoped in your word.
75 I know, O Lord, that your rules are (MJ)righteous,
    and that in (MK)faithfulness you have afflicted me.
76 Let your steadfast love comfort me
    according to your promise to your servant.
77 Let your (ML)mercy come to me, that I may live;
    for your law is my (MM)delight.
78 Let (MN)the insolent be put to (MO)shame,
    because they have (MP)wronged me with falsehood;
    as for me, I will (MQ)meditate on your precepts.
79 Let those who fear you (MR)turn to me,
    that they may know your testimonies.
80 May my heart be (MS)blameless in your statutes,
    (MT)that I may not be put to shame!

Kaph

81 My soul (MU)longs for your salvation;
    I (MV)hope in your word.
82 My (MW)eyes long for your promise;
    I ask, (MX)“When will you comfort me?”
83 For I have (MY)become like a (MZ)wineskin in the smoke,
    yet I have not forgotten your statutes.
84 (NA)How long must your servant endure?[v]
    (NB)When will you judge those who persecute me?
85 (NC)The insolent have (ND)dug pitfalls for me;
    they do not live according to your law.
86 All your commandments are (NE)sure;
    they persecute me (NF)with falsehood; (NG)help me!
87 They have almost made an end of me on earth,
    but I have not forsaken your precepts.
88 In your steadfast love (NH)give me life,
    that I may keep the testimonies of your mouth.

Lamedh

89 Forever, O Lord, your (NI)word
    is firmly fixed in the heavens.
90 Your (NJ)faithfulness endures to all generations;
    you have (NK)established the earth, and it (NL)stands fast.
91 By your (NM)appointment they stand this day,
    for all things are your servants.
92 If your law had not been my (NN)delight,
    I would have perished in my affliction.
93 I will never forget your precepts,
    for by them you have (NO)given me life.
94 I am yours; save me,
    (NP)for I have sought your precepts.
95 The wicked lie in wait to destroy me,
    but I consider your testimonies.
96 I have seen a limit to all perfection,
    but your commandment is exceedingly (NQ)broad.

Mem

97 Oh how (NR)I love your law!
    It is my (NS)meditation all the day.
98 Your commandment makes me (NT)wiser than my enemies,
    for it is ever with me.
99 I have more understanding than all my teachers,
    for (NU)your testimonies are my meditation.
100 I understand more than (NV)the aged,[w]
    for I (NW)keep your precepts.
101 I (NX)hold back my feet from every evil way,
    in order to keep your word.
102 I do not turn aside from your rules,
    for you have taught me.
103 How (NY)sweet are your words to my taste,
    sweeter than honey to my mouth!
104 Through your precepts I get understanding;
    therefore (NZ)I hate every false way.

Nun

105 (OA)Your word is a lamp to my feet
    and a light to my path.
106 I have (OB)sworn an oath and confirmed it,
    to keep your (OC)righteous rules.
107 I am severely (OD)afflicted;
    (OE)give me life, O Lord, according to your word!
108 Accept (OF)my freewill offerings of praise, O Lord,
    and (OG)teach me your rules.
109 I hold my life (OH)in my hand continually,
    but I do not (OI)forget your law.
110 The wicked have laid (OJ)a snare for me,
    but (OK)I do not stray from your precepts.
111 Your testimonies are (OL)my heritage forever,
    for they are (OM)the joy of my heart.
112 I (ON)incline my heart to perform your statutes
    forever, (OO)to the end.[x]

Samekh

113 I hate (OP)the double-minded,
    but I love (OQ)your law.
114 You are my (OR)hiding place and my (OS)shield;
    I (OT)hope in your word.
115 (OU)Depart from me, you evildoers,
    that I may (OV)keep the commandments of my God.
116 Uphold me (OW)according to your promise, that I may live,
    and let me not be (OX)put to shame in my (OY)hope!
117 (OZ)Hold me up, that I may be safe
    and have regard for your statutes continually!
118 You (PA)spurn all who (PB)go astray from your statutes,
    for their cunning is in vain.
119 All the wicked of the earth you discard like (PC)dross,
    therefore (PD)I love your testimonies.
120 My flesh (PE)trembles for fear of you,
    and I am afraid of your judgments.

Ayin

121 I have done what is just and right;
    do not leave me to my oppressors.
122 Give your servant (PF)a pledge of good;
    let not (PG)the insolent oppress me.
123 My (PH)eyes long for your salvation
    and for the fulfillment of your righteous promise.
124 Deal with your servant according to your steadfast love,
    and (PI)teach me your statutes.
125 I am your (PJ)servant; (PK)give me understanding,
    that I may know your testimonies!
126 It is time for the Lord to act,
    for your law has been broken.
127 Therefore I (PL)love your commandments
    above gold, above fine gold.
128 Therefore I consider all your precepts to be right;
    I hate every (PM)false way.

Pe

129 Your testimonies are (PN)wonderful;
    therefore my soul (PO)keeps them.
130 The unfolding of your words gives light;
    it imparts (PP)understanding to the simple.
131 I (PQ)open my mouth and (PR)pant,
    because I (PS)long for your commandments.
132 (PT)Turn to me and be gracious to me,
    as is your way with those who love your name.
133 (PU)Keep steady my steps according to your promise,
    and let no iniquity (PV)get dominion over me.
134 (PW)Redeem me from man's oppression,
    that I may keep your precepts.
135 (PX)Make your face shine upon your servant,
    and (PY)teach me your statutes.
136 My eyes (PZ)shed streams of tears,
    because people (QA)do not keep your law.

Tsadhe

137 (QB)Righteous are you, O Lord,
    and right are your rules.
138 You have appointed your testimonies in (QC)righteousness
    and in all (QD)faithfulness.
139 My (QE)zeal consumes me,
    because my foes forget your words.
140 Your promise is well (QF)tried,
    and your servant (QG)loves it.
141 I am small and despised,
    yet I do not (QH)forget your precepts.
142 Your righteousness is righteous forever,
    and your law is (QI)true.
143 Trouble and anguish have found me out,
    but your commandments are my (QJ)delight.
144 Your testimonies are righteous forever;
    (QK)give me understanding that I may (QL)live.

Qoph

145 With my (QM)whole heart I cry; answer me, O Lord!
    I will (QN)keep your statutes.
146 I call to you; save me,
    that I may observe your testimonies.
147 I rise before (QO)dawn and cry for help;
    I (QP)hope in your words.
148 My eyes are awake before (QQ)the watches of the night,
    that I may meditate on your promise.
149 Hear my voice according to your steadfast love;
    O Lord, (QR)according to your justice (QS)give me life.
150 They draw near who persecute me with evil purpose;
    they are far from your law.
151 But (QT)you are near, O Lord,
    and all your commandments are (QU)true.
152 Long have I known from your testimonies
    that you have (QV)founded them forever.

Resh

153 Look on my (QW)affliction and deliver me,
    for (QX)I do not forget your law.
154 (QY)Plead my cause and redeem me;
    (QZ)give me life according to your promise!
155 (RA)Salvation is far from the wicked,
    (RB)for they do not seek your statutes.
156 (RC)Great is your mercy, O Lord;
    (RD)give me life according to your rules.
157 (RE)Many are my persecutors and my adversaries,
    but I do not (RF)swerve from your testimonies.
158 I look at (RG)the faithless with (RH)disgust,
    because they do not keep your commands.
159 Consider how I (RI)love your precepts!
    (RJ)Give me life according to your steadfast love.
160 (RK)The sum of your word is (RL)truth,
    and every one of your (RM)righteous rules endures forever.

Sin and Shin

161 (RN)Princes persecute me (RO)without cause,
    but my heart (RP)stands in awe of your words.
162 I (RQ)rejoice at your word
    like one who (RR)finds great spoil.
163 I hate and abhor falsehood,
    but I love (RS)your law.
164 Seven times a day I praise you
    for your (RT)righteous rules.
165 Great (RU)peace have those who love your law;
    (RV)nothing can make them stumble.
166 I (RW)hope for your salvation, O Lord,
    and I do your commandments.
167 My soul keeps your testimonies;
    I (RX)love them exceedingly.
168 I keep your precepts and testimonies,
    (RY)for all my ways are before you.

Taw

169 Let my (RZ)cry come before you, O Lord;
    (SA)give me understanding (SB)according to your word!
170 Let my plea come before you;
    (SC)deliver me according to your word.
171 My lips will (SD)pour forth praise,
    for you (SE)teach me your statutes.
172 My tongue will sing of your word,
    for (SF)all your commandments are right.
173 Let your hand be ready to help me,
    for I have (SG)chosen your precepts.
174 I (SH)long for your salvation, O Lord,
    and your law is my (SI)delight.
175 Let my soul live and praise you,
    and let your rules help me.
176 I have (SJ)gone astray like a lost sheep; seek your servant,
    for I do not (SK)forget your commandments.

Deliver Me, O Lord

A Song of (SL)Ascents.

120 In my distress I called to the Lord,
    and he answered me.
Deliver me, O Lord,
    from lying lips,
    from a deceitful tongue.

What shall be given to you,
    (SM)and what more shall be done to you,
    you deceitful tongue?
(SN)A warrior's (SO)sharp arrows,
    with glowing (SP)coals of the broom tree!

Woe to me, that I sojourn in (SQ)Meshech,
    that I dwell among (SR)the tents of (SS)Kedar!
Too long have I had my dwelling
    among those who hate peace.
(ST)I am for peace,
    but when I speak, they are for war!

My Help Comes from the Lord

A Song of (SU)Ascents.

121 I (SV)lift up my eyes to (SW)the hills.
    From where does my help come?
(SX)My help comes from the Lord,
    who (SY)made heaven and earth.

He will not (SZ)let your foot be moved;
    he who (TA)keeps you will not slumber.
Behold, he who keeps Israel
    will neither slumber nor sleep.

The Lord is your keeper;
    the Lord is your (TB)shade on your (TC)right hand.
(TD)The sun shall not (TE)strike you by day,
    nor the moon by night.

The Lord will (TF)keep you from all evil;
    he will (TG)keep your life.
The Lord will keep
    your (TH)going out and your coming in
    from this time forth and forevermore.

Let Us Go to the House of the Lord

A Song of (TI)Ascents. Of David.

122 I was glad when they said to me,
    (TJ)“Let us go to the house of the Lord!”
Our feet have been standing
    within your gates, O Jerusalem!

Jerusalem—(TK)built as a city
    that is (TL)bound firmly together,
to which the tribes (TM)go up,
    the tribes of the Lord,
as was (TN)decreed for[y] Israel,
    to give thanks to the name of the Lord.
There (TO)thrones for judgment were set,
    the thrones of the house of David.

(TP)Pray for the peace of Jerusalem!
    “May they be secure who love you!
Peace be within your (TQ)walls
    and security within your (TR)towers!”
For my brothers and companions' sake
    I will say, (TS)“Peace be within you!”
For the sake of the house of the Lord our God,
    I will (TT)seek your good.

Our Eyes Look to the Lord Our God

A Song of (TU)Ascents.

123 To you I (TV)lift up my eyes,
    O you who are (TW)enthroned in the heavens!
Behold, as the eyes of servants
    look to the hand of their master,
as the eyes of a maidservant
    to the hand of her mistress,
so our eyes look to the Lord our God,
    till he has mercy upon us.

(TX)Have mercy upon us, O Lord, have mercy upon us,
    for we have had more than enough of (TY)contempt.
Our soul has had more than enough
    of (TZ)the scorn of (UA)those who are at ease,
    of the contempt of (UB)the proud.

Our Help Is in the Name of the Lord

A Song of (UC)Ascents. Of David.

124 (UD)If it had not been the Lord who was on our side—
    (UE)let Israel now say—
if it had not been the Lord who was on our side
    when people rose up against us,
then they would have (UF)swallowed us up alive,
    when their anger was kindled against us;
then (UG)the flood would have (UH)swept us away,
    the torrent would have gone (UI)over us;
then over us would have gone
    the raging waters.

Blessed be the Lord,
    who has not given us
    as prey to their teeth!
We have escaped like a bird
    from (UJ)the snare of the fowlers;
the snare is broken,
    and we have escaped!

(UK)Our help is in the name of the Lord,
    who made heaven and earth.

The Lord Surrounds His People

A Song of (UL)Ascents.

125 Those who (UM)trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion,
    which (UN)cannot be moved, but abides forever.
As the mountains surround Jerusalem,
    so (UO)the Lord surrounds his people,
    from this time forth and forevermore.
For (UP)the scepter of wickedness shall not (UQ)rest
    on (UR)the land allotted to the righteous,
lest the righteous (US)stretch out
    their hands to do wrong.
(UT)Do good, O Lord, to those who are good,
    and to those who are (UU)upright in their hearts!
But those who (UV)turn aside to their (UW)crooked ways
    the Lord will lead away with (UX)evildoers!
    (UY)Peace be upon Israel!

Restore Our Fortunes, O Lord

A Song of (UZ)Ascents.

126 When the Lord (VA)restored the fortunes of Zion,
    we were like those who (VB)dream.
Then our (VC)mouth was filled with laughter,
    and our tongue with shouts of joy;
then they said among the nations,
    (VD)“The Lord has done great things for them.”
The Lord has done great things for us;
    we are glad.

Restore our fortunes, O Lord,
    like streams in the Negeb!
(VE)Those who sow in tears
    shall reap with shouts of joy!
He who goes out weeping,
    bearing the seed for sowing,
shall come home with shouts of joy,
    bringing his sheaves with him.

Unless the Lord Builds the House

A Song of (VF)Ascents. Of Solomon.

127 Unless the Lord builds the house,
    those who build it labor in vain.
Unless the Lord (VG)watches over the city,
    the watchman stays awake in vain.
It is in vain that you rise up early
    and go late to rest,
eating the bread of anxious (VH)toil;
    for he gives to his (VI)beloved (VJ)sleep.

Behold, (VK)children are a heritage from the Lord,
    (VL)the fruit of the womb a reward.
Like arrows in the hand of (VM)a warrior
    are the children[z] of one's youth.
Blessed is the man
    who fills his quiver with them!
He shall not be put to shame
    when he speaks with his enemies (VN)in the gate.[aa]

Blessed Is Everyone Who Fears the Lord

A Song of (VO)Ascents.

128 (VP)Blessed is everyone who fears the Lord,
    who (VQ)walks in his ways!
You (VR)shall eat the fruit of the labor of your hands;
    you shall be blessed, and it shall be well with you.

Your wife will be like (VS)a fruitful vine
    within your house;
your children will be like (VT)olive shoots
    around your table.
Behold, thus shall the man be blessed
    who fears the Lord.

(VU)The Lord bless you (VV)from Zion!
    May you see (VW)the prosperity of Jerusalem
    all the days of your life!
May you see your (VX)children's children!
    (VY)Peace be upon Israel!

They Have Afflicted Me from My Youth

A Song of (VZ)Ascents.

129 “Greatly[ab] have they (WA)afflicted me (WB)from my youth”—
    (WC)let Israel now say—
“Greatly have they (WD)afflicted me (WE)from my youth,
    (WF)yet they have not prevailed against me.
(WG)The plowers plowed (WH)upon my back;
    they made long their furrows.”
The Lord is righteous;
    he has cut (WI)the cords of the wicked.
May all who hate Zion
    be (WJ)put to shame and turned backward!
Let them be like (WK)the grass on the housetops,
    which (WL)withers before it grows up,
with which the reaper does not fill his hand
    nor the binder of sheaves his arms,
nor do those who pass by say,
    (WM)“The blessing of the Lord be upon you!
    We (WN)bless you in the name of the Lord!”

My Soul Waits for the Lord

A Song of (WO)Ascents.

130 Out of (WP)the depths I cry to you, O Lord!
    O Lord, hear my voice!
(WQ)Let your ears be attentive
    to (WR)the voice of my pleas for mercy!

If you, O Lord, should (WS)mark iniquities,
    O Lord, who could (WT)stand?
But with you there is (WU)forgiveness,
    (WV)that you may be feared.

I (WW)wait for the Lord, (WX)my soul waits,
    and (WY)in his word I hope;
my soul (WZ)waits for the Lord
    more than (XA)watchmen for (XB)the morning,
    more than watchmen for the morning.

O Israel, (XC)hope in the Lord!
    For (XD)with the Lord there is steadfast love,
    and with him is plentiful redemption.
And he will (XE)redeem Israel
    from all his iniquities.

I Have Calmed and Quieted My Soul

A Song of (XF)Ascents. Of David.

131 O Lord, my heart is not (XG)lifted up;
    my eyes are not (XH)raised too high;
I do not (XI)occupy myself with things
    too great and (XJ)too marvelous for me.
But I have calmed and quieted my soul,
    like a weaned (XK)child with its mother;
    like a weaned child is my soul within me.

(XL)O Israel, hope in the Lord
    from this time forth and forevermore.

The Lord Has Chosen Zion

A Song of (XM)Ascents.

132 Remember, O Lord, in David's favor,
    all (XN)the hardships he endured,
how he swore to the Lord
    and (XO)vowed to (XP)the Mighty One of Jacob,
“I will not enter my house
    or get into my bed,
I will not (XQ)give sleep to my eyes
    or slumber to my eyelids,
until I (XR)find a place for the Lord,
    a dwelling place for (XS)the Mighty One of Jacob.”

Behold, we heard of it in (XT)Ephrathah;
    we found it in (XU)the fields of Jaar.
“Let us go to his dwelling place;
    let us (XV)worship at his (XW)footstool!”

(XX)Arise, O Lord, and go to your (XY)resting place,
    you and the ark of your (XZ)might.
Let your (YA)priests be (YB)clothed with righteousness,
    and let your (YC)saints shout for joy.
10 For the sake of your servant David,
    (YD)do not turn away the face of (YE)your anointed one.

11 (YF)The Lord swore to David a sure oath
    (YG)from which he will not turn back:
(YH)“One of the sons of your body[ac]
    I will set on your throne.
12 If your sons keep my covenant
    and my testimonies that I shall teach them,
their sons also forever
    shall (YI)sit on your throne.”

13 For the Lord has (YJ)chosen Zion;
    he has (YK)desired it for his dwelling place:
14 “This is my (YL)resting place forever;
    here I will (YM)dwell, for I have desired it.
15 I will abundantly (YN)bless her provisions;
    I will (YO)satisfy her poor with bread.
16 Her (YP)priests I will clothe with salvation,
    and her (YQ)saints will shout for joy.
17 There I will make (YR)a horn to sprout for David;
    I have prepared (YS)a lamp for (YT)my anointed.
18 His enemies I will (YU)clothe with shame,
    but on him his crown will shine.”

When Brothers Dwell in Unity

A Song of (YV)Ascents. Of David.

133 Behold, how good and pleasant it is
    when (YW)brothers dwell in unity![ad]
It is like the precious (YX)oil on (YY)the head,
    running down on the beard,
on the beard of Aaron,
    running down on (YZ)the collar of his robes!
It is like (ZA)the dew of (ZB)Hermon,
    which falls on (ZC)the mountains of Zion!
For there the Lord (ZD)has commanded the blessing,
    life forevermore.

Come, Bless the Lord

A Song of (ZE)Ascents.

134 Come, bless the Lord, all you (ZF)servants of the Lord,
    who (ZG)stand (ZH)by night in the house of the Lord!
(ZI)Lift up your hands to (ZJ)the holy place
    and bless the Lord!

May the Lord (ZK)bless you (ZL)from Zion,
    he who (ZM)made heaven and earth!
