  1. And they will listen to your voice, and you and the elders of Israel shall go to the king of Egypt and say to him, ‘The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, has met with us; and now, please let us go a three days' journey into the wilderness, that we may sacrifice to the Lord our God.’

  5. But Moses said, “It would not be right to do so, for the offerings we shall sacrifice to the Lord our God are an abomination to the Egyptians. If we sacrifice offerings abominable to the Egyptians before their eyes, will they not stone us?
  6. We must go three days' journey into the wilderness and sacrifice to the Lord our God as he tells us.”
  7. But Moses said, “You must also let us have sacrifices and burnt offerings, that we may sacrifice to the Lord our God.
  8. Our livestock also must go with us; not a hoof shall be left behind, for we must take of them to serve the Lord our God, and we do not know with what we must serve the Lord until we arrive there.”
  9. “The Lord our God said to us in Horeb, ‘You have stayed long enough at this mountain.
  10. Israel's Refusal to Enter the Land

    “Then we set out from Horeb and went through all that great and terrifying wilderness that you saw, on the way to the hill country of the Amorites, as the Lord our God commanded us. And we came to Kadesh-barnea.
  11. And I said to you, ‘You have come to the hill country of the Amorites, which the Lord our God is giving us.
  12. And they took in their hands some of the fruit of the land and brought it down to us, and brought us word again and said, ‘It is a good land that the Lord our God is giving us.’
  13. “Then you answered me, ‘We have sinned against the Lord. We ourselves will go up and fight, just as the Lord our God commanded us.’ And every one of you fastened on his weapons of war and thought it easy to go up into the hill country.
  14. as the sons of Esau who live in Seir and the Moabites who live in Ar did for me, until I go over the Jordan into the land that the Lord our God is giving to us.’
  15. And the Lord our God gave him over to us, and we defeated him and his sons and all his people.
  16. From Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, and from the city that is in the valley, as far as Gilead, there was not a city too high for us. The Lord our God gave all into our hands.
  17. Only to the land of the sons of Ammon you did not draw near, that is, to all the banks of the river Jabbok and the cities of the hill country, whatever the Lord our God had forbidden us.
  18. So the Lord our God gave into our hand Og also, the king of Bashan, and all his people, and we struck him down until he had no survivor left.
  19. For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as the Lord our God is to us, whenever we call upon him?
  20. The Lord our God made a covenant with us in Horeb.
  21. And you said, ‘Behold, the Lord our God has shown us his glory and greatness, and we have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire. This day we have seen God speak with man, and man still live.
  22. Now therefore why should we die? For this great fire will consume us. If we hear the voice of the Lord our God any more, we shall die.
  23. Go near and hear all that the Lord our God will say, and speak to us all that the Lord our God will speak to you, and we will hear and do it.’
  24. “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.
  25. “When your son asks you in time to come, ‘What is the meaning of the testimonies and the statutes and the rules that the Lord our God has commanded you?’
