  1. Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.
  2. And God saw that the light was good. Then he separated the light from the darkness.
  3. God called the light “day” and the darkness “night.” And evening passed and morning came, marking the first day.

  12. The Lord went ahead of them. He guided them during the day with a pillar of cloud, and he provided light at night with a pillar of fire. This allowed them to travel by day or by night.
  13. The cloud settled between the Egyptian and Israelite camps. As darkness fell, the cloud turned to fire, lighting up the night. But the Egyptians and Israelites did not approach each other all night.
  14. On the morning of the third day, thunder roared and lightning flashed, and a dense cloud came down on the mountain. There was a long, loud blast from a ram’s horn, and all the people trembled.
  15. When the people heard the thunder and the loud blast of the ram’s horn, and when they saw the flashes of lightning and the smoke billowing from the mountain, they stood at a distance, trembling with fear.
  16. Then make the seven lamps for the lampstand, and set them so they reflect their light forward.

    “Command the people of Israel to bring you pure oil of pressed olives for the light, to keep the lamps burning continually.
  18. And each evening when he lights the lamps, he must again burn incense in the Lord’s presence. This must be done from generation to generation.
  19. You must not even light a fire in any of your homes on the Sabbath.”
