Job

19 Then Job replied:

²“How long will you torment^(A) me
    and crush^(B) me with words?
³Ten times^(C) now you have reproached^(D) me;
    shamelessly you attack me.
⁴If it is true that I have gone astray,
    my error^(E) remains my concern alone.
⁵If indeed you would exalt yourselves above me^(F)
    and use my humiliation against me,
⁶then know that God has wronged me^(G)
    and drawn his net^(H) around me.^(I)

⁷“Though I cry, ‘Violence!’ I get no response;^(J)
    though I call for help,^(K) there is no justice.^(L)
⁸He has blocked my way so I cannot pass;^(M)
    he has shrouded my paths in darkness.^(N)
⁹He has stripped^(O) me of my honor^(P)
    and removed the crown from my head.^(Q)
¹⁰He tears me down^(R) on every side till I am gone;
    he uproots my hope^(S) like a tree.^(T)
¹¹His anger^(U) burns against me;
    he counts me among his enemies.^(V)
¹²His troops advance in force;^(W)
    they build a siege ramp^(X) against me
    and encamp around my tent.^(Y)

¹³“He has alienated my family^(Z) from me;
    my acquaintances are completely estranged from me.^(AA)
¹⁴My relatives have gone away;
    my closest friends^(AB) have forgotten me.
¹⁵My guests^(AC) and my female servants^(AD) count me a foreigner;
    they look on me as on a stranger.
¹⁶I summon my servant, but he does not answer,
    though I beg him with my own mouth.
¹⁷My breath is offensive to my wife;
    I am loathsome^(AE) to my own family.
¹⁸Even the little boys^(AF) scorn me;
    when I appear, they ridicule me.^(AG)
¹⁹All my intimate friends^(AH) detest me;^(AI)
    those I love have turned against me.^(AJ)
²⁰I am nothing but skin and bones;^(AK)
    I have escaped only by the skin of my teeth.^[a]

²¹“Have pity on me, my friends,^(AL) have pity,
for the hand of God has struck^(AM) me.
²²Why do you pursue^(AN) me as God does?^(AO)
Will you never get enough of my flesh?^(AP)

²³“Oh, that my words were recorded,
    that they were written on a scroll,^(AQ)
²⁴that they were inscribed with an iron tool^(AR) on^[b] lead,
    or engraved in rock forever!^(AS)
²⁵I know that my redeemer^[c]^(AT) lives,^(AU)
    and that in the end he will stand on the earth.^[d]
²⁶And after my skin has been destroyed,
    yet^[e] in^[f] my flesh I will see God;^(AV)
²⁷I myself will see him
    with my own eyes^(AW)—I, and not another.
    How my heart yearns^(AX) within me!

²⁸“If you say, ‘How we will hound^(AY) him,
    since the root of the trouble lies in him,^[g]’
²⁹you should fear the sword yourselves;
    for wrath will bring punishment by the sword,^(AZ)
    and then you will know that there is judgment.^[h]”^(BA)

Acts 4:1-22

Peter and John Before the Sanhedrin

4 The priests and the captain of the temple guard^(A) and the Sadducees^(B) came up to Peter and John while they were speaking to the people. ²They were greatly disturbed because the apostles were teaching the people, proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead.^(C) ³They seized Peter and John and, because it was evening, they put them in jail^(D) until the next day. ⁴But many who heard the message believed; so the number of men who believed grew^(E) to about five thousand.

⁵The next day the rulers,^(F) the elders and the teachers of the law met in Jerusalem. ⁶Annas the high priest was there, and so were Caiaphas,^(G) John, Alexander and others of the high priest’s family. ⁷They had Peter and John brought before them and began to question them: “By what power or what name did you do this?”

⁸Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit,^(H) said to them: “Rulers and elders of the people!^(I) ⁹If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a man who was lame^(J) and are being asked how he was healed, ¹⁰then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth,^(K) whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead,^(L) that this man stands before you healed. ¹¹Jesus is

“‘the stone you builders rejected,
which has become the cornerstone.’^[a]^(M)

¹²Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”^(N)

¹³When they saw the courage of Peter and John^(O) and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men,^(P) they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.^(Q) ¹⁴But since they could see the man who had been healed standing there with them, there was nothing they could say. ¹⁵So they ordered them to withdraw from the Sanhedrin^(R) and then conferred together. ¹⁶“What are we going to do with these men?”^(S) they asked. “Everyone living in Jerusalem knows they have performed a notable sign,^(T) and we cannot deny it. ¹⁷But to stop this thing from spreading any further among the people, we must warn them to speak no longer to anyone in this name.”

¹⁸Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.^(U) ¹⁹But Peter and John replied, “Which is right in God’s eyes: to listen to you, or to him?^(V) You be the judges! ²⁰As for us, we cannot help speaking^(W) about what we have seen and heard.”^(X)

²¹After further threats they let them go. They could not decide how to punish them, because all the people^(Y) were praising God^(Z) for what had happened. ²²For the man who was miraculously healed was over forty years old.
