The Roman Governor Offers To Free Jesus, But The Crowd Demands He Be Crucified
11 Now Jesus was stood[a] in front of the governor. And the governor questioned Him, saying, “Are You the King of the Jews?” And Jesus said, “You are saying[b] it”. 12 And during His being accused by the chief priests and elders, He answered nothing. 13 Then Pilate says to Him, “Do You not hear how many things they are testifying against You?” 14 And He did not answer him with-regard-to even one charge[c], so that the governor was marveling greatly.

- Matthew 27:11 Or, was made to stand.
- Matthew 27:11 Some think this simply means ‘Yes’. Others think it is deliberately understated. Though Jesus means ‘you are saying it correctly’, He leaves Pilate to supply this intent, which he does based on the Jewish accusers. Jesus may have answered this way because ‘King of the Jews’ meant something different to Pilate than to Jesus.
