Luke 5:33-39 Wycliffe Bible (WYC)

33 And they said to him, Why the disciples of John fast oft, and make prayers, also and of the Pharisees, but thine eat and drink?

34 To whom he said, Whether ye be able to make the sons of the spouse to fast [Whether ye may make the sons of the spouse to fast], while the spouse is with them?

35 But days shall come, when the spouse shall be taken away from them, and then they shall fast in those days.

36 And he said to them also a likeness; For no man taketh a piece from a new cloak [of a new cloth], and putteth it into an old clothing [and putteth it into an old cloth]; else both he breaketh the new, and the piece of the new accordeth not to the old.

37 And no man putteth new wine into old bottles; else the new wine shall break the bottles, and the wine shall be shed out, and the bottles shall perish.

38 But new wine oweth to be put into new bottles [But new wine is to be put into new wine vessels], and both be kept.

39 And no man drinking the old, will at once the new; for he saith, The old is the better. [And no man drinking old, will anon new; soothly he saith, The old is better.]

Luke 5:33-39 New Matthew Bible (NMB)

33 Then they said to him, Why do the disciples of John fast often, and pray, and the disciples of the Pharisees also, but yours eat and drink?

34 And he said to them, Can you make the children of the wedding fast while the bridegroom is present with them? 35 The days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them. Then they will fast, in those days.

36 Then he spoke to them in a similitude: No one patches a piece of a new garment into an old vesture, because if he does, then he will have cut up the new, and the piece that was taken out of the new does not agree with the old. 37 Also, no one pours new wine into old wineskins, because if he does, the new wine bursts the vessels and runs out, and the vessels are destroyed. 38 But new wine must be poured into new vessels, and both are preserved. 39 Also, no one who drinks old wine can straightaway abide the new, for he says the old is pleasanter.

Luke 5:33-39 1599 Geneva Bible (GNV)

33 [a]Then they said unto him, Why do the disciples of John fast often, and pray, and the disciples of the Pharisees also, but thine eat and drink?

34 [b]And he said unto them, Can ye make the children of the wedding chamber to fast, as long as the bridegroom is with them?

35 But the days will come, even when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them: then shall they fast in those days.

36 Again he spake also unto them a parable, No man putteth a piece of a new garment into an old vesture: for then the new renteth it, and the piece taken out of the new, agreeth not with the old.

37 Also no man poureth new wine into old vessels: for then the new wine will break the vessels, and it will run out, and the vessels will perish:

38 But new wine must be poured into new vessels: so both are preserved.

39 Also no man that drinketh old wine, straightway desireth new: for he saith, The old is more profitable.

Footnotes:

  1. Luke 5:33 It is the point of hypocrites and ignorant men to put an holiness in fasting, and in things indifferent.
  2. Luke 5:34 Laws generally made without any consideration of circumstances, for fasting and other things of like sort, are not only tyrannous, but very hurtful in the Church.

Luke 5:33-39 Authorized (King James) Version (AKJV)

33 And they said unto him, Why do the disciples of John fast often, and make prayers, and likewise the disciples of the Pharisees; but thine eat and drink? 34 And he said unto them, Can ye make the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them? 35 But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days.

36 And he spake also a parable unto them; No man putteth a piece of a new garment upon an old; if otherwise, then both the new maketh a rent, and the piece that was taken out of the new agreeth not with the old. 37 And no man putteth new wine into old bottles; else the new wine will burst the bottles, and be spilled, and the bottles shall perish. 38 But new wine must be put into new bottles; and both are preserved. 39 No man also having drunk old wine straightway desireth new: for he saith, The old is better.
