13 Then Gideon son of Jehoash returned from the battle by way of[a] the ascent of Heres.[b] 14 He captured a young man from Succoth[c] and questioned him. The young man listed[d] for him the commanders of Succoth and its elders, seventy-seven men. 15 He came to the men of Succoth, and he said, “Here is Zebah and Zalmunna, about whom you taunted me, saying, ‘Is the palm[e] of Zebah and Zalmunna in your hand now, that we should give food to your weary men?’” 16 He took the elders of the city and the thorn bushes and briers of the wilderness, and he trampled[f] the men of Succoth with them. 17 He broke down the tower of Penuel, and he killed the men of the city.

He wrote out for Gideon[a] a list of the 77 officials of Succoth, including its elders. 15 Then Gideon[b] approached the men of Succoth and announced, “Here are Zebah and Zalmunna. You criticized me about them when you said, ‘Do you have Zebah and Zalmunna in custody[c] already, so that we should give food to your weary army?’” 16 So he took the elders of the city and disciplined the men of Succoth with thorns and briers from the desert. 17 He also demolished the tower in Penuel and killed the men of the city.
