Jeremiah 9:12-16
New English Translation
12 I said,[a]
“Who is wise enough to understand why this has happened?[b]
Who has a word from the Lord that can explain it?[c]
Why does the land lie in ruins?
Why is it as scorched as a desert through which no one travels?”
13 The Lord answered, “This has happened because these people have rejected my laws that I gave them. They have not obeyed me or followed those laws.[d] 14 Instead they have followed the stubborn inclinations of their own hearts. They have paid allegiance to[e] the gods called Baal,[f] as their fathers[g] taught them to do. 15 So then, listen to what I, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel,[h] say,[i] ‘I will make these people eat the bitter food of suffering and drink the poison water of judgment.[j] 16 I will scatter them among nations that neither they nor their ancestors[k] have known anything about. I will send people chasing after them with swords[l] until I have destroyed them.’”[m]

- Jeremiah 9:12 tn The words, “I said” are not in the text. It is not clear that a shift in speaker has taken place. However, the words of the verse are very unlikely to be a continuation of the Lord’s threat. It is generally assumed that these are the words of Jeremiah and that a dialogue is going on between him and the Lord in vv. 9-14. That assumption is accepted here.

- Jeremiah 9:14 tn Heb “the Baals,” referring either to the pagan gods called “Baals” or the images of Baal (so NLT).
- Jeremiah 9:14 tn Or “forefathers,” or “ancestors.” Here the referent could be the immediate parents or, by their example, more distant ancestors.
- Jeremiah 9:15 tn Heb “Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel.”sn See the study notes on 2:9 and 7:3.
- Jeremiah 9:15 tn Heb “Therefore, thus says the Lord…” The person is shifted from third to first to better conform with English style.
- Jeremiah 9:15 tn Heb “I will feed this people wormwood and make them drink poison water.” “Wormwood” and “poison water” are not to be understood literally here but are symbolic of judgment and suffering. See, e.g., BDB 542 s.v. לַעֲנָה.
- Jeremiah 9:16 tn Heb “fathers.”
- Jeremiah 9:16 tn Heb “I will send the sword after them.” The sword here is probably not completely literal but refers to death by violent means, including death by the sword.
- Jeremiah 9:16 sn He will destroy them but not completely. See Jer 5:18; 30:11; 46:28.

12 (A)Who is the man so wise that he can understand this? To whom has the mouth of the Lord spoken, that he may declare it? Why is the land ruined (B)and laid waste like a wilderness, so that no one passes through? 13 And the Lord says: (C)“Because they have forsaken my law that I set before them, and have not obeyed my voice or walked in accord with it, 14 but (D)have stubbornly followed their own hearts and have gone after the Baals, as their fathers taught them. 15 Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: (E)Behold, I will feed this people with bitter food, and give them (F)poisonous water to drink. 16 (G)I will scatter them among the nations (H)whom neither they nor their fathers have known, and I will (I)send the sword after them, until I have consumed them.”
