22 Yahweh says, “Behold, a people comes from the north country. A great nation will be stirred up from the uttermost parts of the earth. 23 They take hold of bow and spear. They are cruel, and have no mercy. Their voice roars like the sea, and they ride on horses, everyone set in array, as a man to the battle, against you, daughter of Zion.”

24 We have heard its report. Our hands become feeble. Anguish has taken hold of us, and pains as of a woman in labor. 25 Don’t go out into the field or walk by the way; for the sword of the enemy and terror are on every side. 26 Daughter of my people, clothe yourself with sackcloth, and wallow in ashes! Mourn, as for an only son, most bitter lamentation, for the destroyer will suddenly come on us.

A Cruel Nation from the North

22 This is what the Lord says:

Look,(A) an army is coming from a northern land;(B)
a great nation will be stirred up
from the remote regions of the earth.(C)
23 They grasp bow and javelin.
They are cruel and show no mercy.(D)
Their voice roars like the sea,(E)
and they ride on horses,
lined up like men in battle formation
against you, Daughter Zion.

24 We have heard about it,
and our hands have become weak.
Distress has seized us—
pain, like a woman in labor.(F)
25 Don’t go out to the fields;
don’t walk on the road.
For the enemy has a sword;
terror is on every side.(G)

26 My dear[a] people, dress yourselves in sackcloth
and roll in the dust.(H)
Mourn as you would for an only son,(I)
a bitter lament,
for suddenly the destroyer(J) will come on us.(K)
