2 Timothy 4:1-5 Wycliffe Bible (WYC)

I witness before God and Christ Jesus, that shall deem the quick and the dead, by the coming of him, and the kingdom of him,

preach the word, be thou busy suitably without rest, reprove thou, beseech thou, blame thou in all patience and doctrine. [preach the word, be thou busy to opportune and inopportune, reprove, beseech, blame in all patience and doctrine.]

For time shall be, when men shall not suffer wholesome teaching, but at their desires they shall gather together to themselves masters itching to the ears. [Forsooth time shall be, when men shall not sustain whole doctrine, but at their desires, they shall gather together to themselves masters itching, or pleasing, to the ears.]

And truly they shall turn away the hearing from truth, but to fables they shall turn. [And truly they shall turn away their hearing from truth, but to fables they shall be turned together.]

But wake thou, in all things travail thou, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill thy service [fulfill thy service, or office], be thou sober.

2 Timothy 4:1-5 New Matthew Bible (NMB)

He exhorts Timothy to be fervent in the word and to suffer adversity, makes mention of his own death, and bids Timothy to come to him.

I charge you therefore before God, and before the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the quick and the dead at his appearing in his kingdom: preach the word; be fervent, be it in season or out of season. Refute, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and instruction.

For the time will come when the people will not suffer wholesome doctrine, but, after their own fancies, they (whose ears itch) will get themselves a heap of teachers, and will turn their ears from the truth, and will be given to fables. But as for you, watch in all things, and suffer adversity, and do the work of an evangelist. Fulfil your office to the utmost.

2 Timothy 4:1-5 1599 Geneva Bible (GNV)

1 He chargeth him to preach the Gospel with all diligence, 3 in that so miserable a time: 6 that his death is hard at hand, 8 yet so, that as a conqueror he maketh haste to a glorious triumph. 10 He showeth the cause why he sendeth for Timothy, 11 even by reason of his present state.

I [a]Charge thee therefore before God, and before the Lord Jesus Christ, which shall judge the quick and dead at that his appearing, and in his kingdom,

Preach the word: be instant, in season, and out of season: improve, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.

[b]For the time will come when they will not suffer wholesome doctrine: but having their ears itching, shall after their own lusts get them an heap of teachers,

And shall turn their ears from the truth, and shall be given unto [c]fables.

[d]But watch thou in all things: suffer adversity: do the work of an Evangelist: [e]cause thy ministry to be thoroughly liked of.

Footnotes:

  1. 2 Timothy 4:1 The principal and chief of all admonitions, being therefore proposed with a most earnest charge, is this: That the word of God be propounded with a certain holy importunity, as necessity requireth: but so, that a good and true ground of the doctrine be laid, and the vehemency be tempered with all holy meekness.
  2. 2 Timothy 4:3 Faithful Pastors in times past took all occasions they could, because men were very prompt and ready to return to their fables.
  3. 2 Timothy 4:4 To false and unprofitable doctrines, which the world is now so bewitched withal, that it had rather the open light of the truth were utterly put out, when it would come out of darkness.
  4. 2 Timothy 4:5 The wickedness and falling away of the world, ought to cause faithful ministers to be so much the more careful.
  5. 2 Timothy 4:5 Prove and show by good and substantial proof, that thou art the true minister of God.

2 Timothy 4:1-5 Authorized (King James) Version (AKJV)

I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.
