28 And now, ye little sons, dwell ye in him, that when he shall appear, we have trust, and be not confounded of him in his coming.

29 If ye know that he is just, know ye that also each that doeth rightwiseness, is born of him.

See ye what manner charity the Father gave to us, that we be named the sons of God, and be his sons. For this thing the world knew not us, for it knew not him [For this thing the world knoweth not us, for it knoweth not him].

Most dear brethren, now we be the sons of God, and yet it appeared not, what we shall be. We know, that when he shall appear, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.

And each man that hath this hope in him, maketh himself holy, as [and] he is holy.

28 And now babes, abide in him, so that when he appears we may be bold, and not be made ashamed before him at his coming. 29 If you know that he is righteous, know also that he who follows righteousness is born of him.

The singular love of God toward us. How we in response ought to love one another.

Behold what love the Father has shown on us, that we should be called the children of God. Because of this, the world does not know you: because it does not know him. Dearly beloveds, now we are the children of God. And yet it does not appear what we will be. But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him. For we shall see him as he is. And everyone who has this hope in him purifies himself, even as he is pure.

28 [a]And now, little children, abide in him, that when he shall appear, we may be bold, and not be ashamed before him, at his coming.

29 [b]If ye know that he is righteous, know ye that he which doeth righteously, is born of him.

1 Setting down the inestimable glory of this that we are God’s sons, 7 he showeth that newness of life must be testifieth by good works, whereof charity is a manifest token. 19 Of faith,  22 and praying unto God.

Behold, [c][d]what love the Father hath given to us, that we should be [e]called the sons of God: [f]For this cause this world knoweth you not, because it knoweth not him.

[g]Dearly beloved, now are we the sons of God, but yet it is not made manifest what we shall be: and we know that when he shall be made manifest: we shall be [h]like him: for we shall see him [i]as he is.

[j]And every man that hath this hope in him purgeth himself, even [k]as he is pure.

Footnotes

  1. 1 John 2:28 The conclusion both of the whole exhortation, and also of the former treatise.
  2. 1 John 2:29 A passing over to the treatise following, which tendeth to the same purpose, but yet is more ample, and handleth the same matter after another order: for before he taught us to go up from the effects to the cause, and in this that followeth, he goeth down from the causes to the effects. And this is the sum of the argument: God is the fountain of all righteousness: and therefore they that give themselves to righteousness, are known to be born of him, because they resemble God the Father.
  3. 1 John 3:1 He beginneth to declare this agreement between the Father and the Son at the highest cause, to wit, at that free love of God towards us, wherewith he so loveth us, that he also adopteth us to be his children.
  4. 1 John 3:1 What a gift of how great love.
  5. 1 John 3:1 That we should be the sons of God, and so that all the world may perceive we are so.
  6. 1 John 3:1 Before he declareth this adoption, he saith two things: the one, that this so great a dignity is not to be esteemed, according to the judgment of the flesh, because it is unknown to the world, for the world knoweth not God the Father himself.
  7. 1 John 3:2 The other: This dignity is not fully made manifest to ourselves, much less to strangers, but we are sure of the accomplishment of it, insomuch that we shall be like to the Son of God himself, and shall enjoy his sight indeed, such as he is now: but yet notwithstanding this is deferred until his next coming.
  8. 1 John 3:2 Like, but not equal.
  9. 1 John 3:2 For now we see as in a glass, 1 Cor. 13:12.
  10. 1 John 3:3 Now he describeth this adoption, (the glory whereof as yet consisteth in hope) by the effect, to wit, because that whosoever is made the Son of God, endeavoreth to resemble the Father in purity.
  11. 1 John 3:3 This word signifieth a likeness, but not in equality.

28 And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming. 29 If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him.

Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.
