The Ark Brought from Kiriath-Jearim

13 David consulted with the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, with every leader. And David said to all the assembly of Israel, “If it seems good to you and from the Lord our God, let us send abroad to our brothers (A)who remain in all the lands of Israel, as well as to the priests and Levites in the cities that have pasturelands, that they may be gathered to us. Then let us bring again the ark of our God to us, (B)for we did not seek it[a] in the days of Saul.” All the assembly agreed to do so, for the thing was right in the eyes of all the people.

Uzzah and the Ark

(C)So David assembled all Israel (D)from the (E)Nile[b] of Egypt to Lebo-hamath, to bring the ark of God (F)from Kiriath-jearim. (G)And David and all Israel went up to (H)Baalah, that is, to Kiriath-jearim that belongs to Judah, to bring up from there the ark of God, which is called by the name of the Lord who (I)sits enthroned above the cherubim. And they carried the ark of God on a new cart, from the house of (J)Abinadab, and Uzzah and Ahio[c] were driving the cart. And David and all Israel were celebrating before God with all their might, with song and (K)lyres and harps and tambourines and cymbals and trumpets.

And when they came to the threshing floor of (L)Chidon, Uzzah put out his hand to take hold of the ark, for the oxen stumbled. 10 And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Uzzah, and he struck him down (M)because he put out his hand to the ark, and (N)he died there before God. 11 And David was angry because the Lord had broken out against Uzzah. And that place is called Perez-uzza[d] to this day. 12 And David was afraid of God that day, and he said, “How can I bring the ark of God home to me?” 13 So David did not take the ark home into the city of David, but took it aside to the house (O)of Obed-edom the Gittite. 14 And the ark of God remained with the household of Obed-edom in his house three months. (P)And the Lord blessed the household of Obed-edom and all that he had.

David and the Ark

13 David consulted with all his leaders, the commanders of hundreds and of thousands. Then he said to the whole assembly of Israel, “If it seems good to you, and if this is from the Lord our God, let us spread out and send the message to the rest of our relatives in all the districts of Israel, including the priests and Levites in their cities with pasturelands,(A) that they should gather together with us. Then let us bring back the ark of our God, for we did not inquire of Him(B) in Saul’s days.” Since the proposal seemed right to all the people, the whole assembly agreed to do it.

So David assembled all Israel,(C) from the Shihor of Egypt to the entrance of Hamath,[a](D) to bring the ark of God from Kiriath-jearim.(E) David(F) and all Israel went to Baalah(G) (that is, Kiriath-jearim that belongs to Judah) to take the ark of God from there, which is called by the name of the Lord who dwells between the cherubim.(H) At Abinadab’s house(I) they set the ark of God on a new cart. Uzzah and Ahio[b] were guiding the cart.

David and all Israel were celebrating with all their might before God with songs and with lyres, harps, tambourines, cymbals, and trumpets.(J) When they came to Chidon’s threshing floor,(K) Uzzah reached out to hold the ark because the oxen had stumbled. 10 Then the Lord’s anger burned against Uzzah, and He struck him dead because he had reached out to the ark.(L) So he died there in the presence of God.(M)

11 David was angry because of the Lord’s outburst against Uzzah, so he named that place Outburst Against Uzzah,[c] as it is still named today. 12 David feared God that day and said, “How can I ever bring the ark of God to me?” 13 So David did not move the ark of God home[d] to the city of David; instead, he took it to the house of Obed-edom the Gittite.(N) 14 The ark of God remained with Obed-edom’s family in his house for three months, and the Lord blessed his family and all that he had.
