Psalm 23

The Divine Shepherd

A Psalm of David.

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.(A)
    He makes me lie down in green pastures;
he leads me beside still waters;[a](B)
    he restores my soul.[b]
He leads me in right paths[c]
    for his name’s sake.(C)

Even though I walk through the darkest valley,[d]
    I fear no evil,
for you are with me;
    your rod and your staff,
    they comfort me.(D)

You prepare a table before me
    in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
    my cup overflows.(E)
Surely[e] goodness and mercy[f] shall follow me
    all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
    my whole life long.[g](F)

Psalm 24

Entrance into the Temple

Of David. A Psalm.

The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it,
    the world, and those who live in it,(G)
for he has founded it on the seas
    and established it on the rivers.

Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord?
    And who shall stand in his holy place?(H)
Those who have clean hands and pure hearts,
    who do not lift up their souls to what is false
    and do not swear deceitfully.(I)
They will receive blessing from the Lord
    and vindication from the God of their salvation.(J)
Such is the company of those who seek him,
    who seek the face of the God of Jacob.[h] Selah

Lift up your heads, O gates!
    and be lifted up, O ancient doors,
    that the King of glory may come in!(K)
Who is the King of glory?
    The Lord, strong and mighty,
    the Lord, mighty in battle.(L)
Lift up your heads, O gates!
    and be lifted up, O ancient doors,
    that the King of glory may come in!(M)
10 Who is this King of glory?
    The Lord of hosts,
    he is the King of glory. Selah

Psalm 25

Prayer for Guidance and for Deliverance

Of David.

To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.(N)
O my God, in you I trust;
    do not let me be put to shame;
    do not let my enemies exult over me.(O)
Do not let those who wait for you be put to shame;
    let them be ashamed who are wantonly treacherous.(P)

Make me to know your ways, O Lord;
    teach me your paths.(Q)
Lead me in your truth and teach me,
    for you are the God of my salvation;
    for you I wait all day long.(R)

Be mindful of your mercy, O Lord, and of your steadfast love,
    for they have been from of old.(S)
Do not remember the sins of my youth or my transgressions;
    according to your steadfast love remember me,
    for the sake of your goodness, O Lord!(T)

Good and upright is the Lord;
    therefore he instructs sinners in the way.(U)
He leads the humble in what is right
    and teaches the humble his way.(V)
10 All the paths of the Lord are steadfast love and faithfulness,
    for those who keep his covenant and his decrees.(W)

11 For your name’s sake, O Lord,
    pardon my guilt, for it is great.(X)
12 Who are they who fear the Lord?
    He will teach them the way that they should choose.

13 They will abide in prosperity,
    and their children shall possess the land.(Y)
14 The friendship of the Lord is for those who fear him,
    and he makes his covenant known to them.(Z)
15 My eyes are ever toward the Lord,
    for he will pluck my feet out of the net.(AA)

16 Turn to me and be gracious to me,
    for I am lonely and afflicted.(AB)
17 Relieve the troubles of my heart,
    and bring me[i] out of my distress.(AC)
18 Consider my affliction and my trouble,
    and forgive all my sins.(AD)

19 Consider how many are my foes
    and with what violent hatred they hate me.(AE)
20 O guard my life and deliver me;
    do not let me be put to shame, for I take refuge in you.
21 May integrity and uprightness preserve me,
    for I wait for you.(AF)

22 Redeem Israel, O God,
    out of all its troubles.(AG)

18 The next day Paul went with us to visit James, and all the elders were present.(A) 19 After greeting them, he related one by one the things that God had done among the gentiles through his ministry.(B) 20 When they heard it, they praised God. Then they said to him, “You see, brother, how many thousands of believers there are among the Jews, and they are all zealous for the law.(C) 21 They have been told about you that you teach all the Jews living among the gentiles to forsake Moses and that you tell them not to circumcise their children or observe the customs. 22 What then is to be done? They will certainly hear that you have come. 23 So do what we tell you. We have four men who are under a vow.(D) 24 Join these men, go through the rite of purification with them, and pay for the shaving of their heads. Thus all will know that there is nothing in what they have been told about you but that you yourself observe and guard the law.(E) 25 But as for the gentiles who have become believers, we have sent a letter with our judgment that they should abstain from what has been sacrificed to idols and from blood and from what is strangled[a] and from sexual immorality.”(F) 26 Then Paul took the men, and the next day, having purified himself, he entered the temple with them, making public the completion of the days of purification when the sacrifice would be made for each of them.(G)

Paul Arrested in the Temple

27 When the seven days were almost completed, the Jews from Asia, who had seen him in the temple, stirred up the whole crowd. They seized him,(H) 28 shouting, “Fellow Israelites,[b] help! This is the man who is teaching everyone everywhere against our people, our law, and this place; more than that, he has actually brought Greeks into the temple and has defiled this holy place.”(I) 29 For they had previously seen Trophimus the Ephesian with him in the city, and they supposed that Paul had brought him into the temple.(J) 30 Then all the city was aroused, and the people rushed together. They seized Paul and dragged him out of the temple, and immediately the doors were shut.(K) 31 While they were trying to kill him, word came to the tribune of the cohort that all Jerusalem was in an uproar. 32 Immediately he took soldiers and centurions and ran down to them. When they saw the tribune and the soldiers, they stopped beating Paul.(L) 33 Then the tribune came, arrested him, and ordered him to be bound with two chains; he inquired who he was and what he had done.(M) 34 Some in the crowd shouted one thing, some another, and as he could not learn the facts because of the uproar, he ordered him to be brought into the barracks.(N) 35 When Paul[c] came to the steps, the violence of the mob was so great that he had to be carried by the soldiers. 36 The crowd that followed kept shouting, “Away with him!”(O)

Paul Defends Himself

37 Just as Paul was about to be brought into the barracks, he said to the tribune, “May I say something to you?” The tribune[d] replied, “Do you know Greek? 38 Then you are not the Egyptian who recently stirred up a revolt and led the four thousand assassins out into the wilderness?”(P) 39 Paul replied, “I am a Jew from Tarsus in Cilicia, a citizen of an important city; I beg you, let me speak to the people.”(Q) 40 When he had given him permission, Paul stood on the steps and motioned to the people for silence, and when there was a great hush, he addressed them in the Hebrew[e] language, saying:(R)
