An Urgent Plea for Help in Trouble

To the Chief Musician. Set to ^[a]“The Lilies.” A Psalm of David.

69 Save me, O God!
For ^(A)the waters have come up to my ^[b]neck.
²^(B)I sink in deep mire,
Where there is no standing;
I have come into deep waters,
Where the floods overflow me.
³^(C)I am weary with my crying;
My throat is dry;
^(D)My eyes fail while I wait for my God.

⁴Those who ^(E)hate me without a cause
Are more than the hairs of my head;
They are mighty who would destroy me,
Being my enemies wrongfully;
Though I have stolen nothing,
I still must restore it.

⁵O God, You know my foolishness;
And my sins are not hidden from You.
⁶Let not those who ^[c]wait for You, O Lord God of hosts, be ashamed because of me;
Let not those who seek You be ^[d]confounded because of me, O God of Israel.
⁷Because for Your sake I have borne reproach;
Shame has covered my face.
⁸^(F)I have become a stranger to my brothers,
And an alien to my mother’s children;
⁹^(G)Because zeal for Your house has eaten me up,
^(H)And the reproaches of those who reproach You have fallen on me.
¹⁰When I wept and chastened my soul with fasting,
That became my reproach.
¹¹I also ^[e]made sackcloth my garment;
I became a byword to them.
¹²Those who ^[f]sit in the gate speak against me,
And I am the song of the ^(I)drunkards.

¹³But as for me, my prayer is to You,
O Lord, in the acceptable time;
O God, in the multitude of Your mercy,
Hear me in the truth of Your salvation.
¹⁴Deliver me out of the mire,
And let me not sink;
Let me be delivered from those who hate me,
And out of the deep waters.
¹⁵Let not the floodwater overflow me,
Nor let the deep swallow me up;
And let not the pit shut its mouth on me.

¹⁶Hear me, O Lord, for Your lovingkindness is good;
Turn to me according to the multitude of Your tender mercies.
¹⁷And do not hide Your face from Your servant,
For I am in trouble;
Hear me speedily.
¹⁸Draw near to my soul, and redeem it;
Deliver me because of my enemies.

¹⁹You know ^(J)my reproach, my shame, and my dishonor;
My adversaries are all before You.
²⁰Reproach has broken my heart,
And I am full of ^[g]heaviness;
^(K)I looked for someone to take pity, but there was none;
And for ^(L)comforters, but I found none.
²¹They also gave me gall for my food,
^(M)And for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.

²²^(N)Let their table become a snare before them,
And their well-being a trap.
²³^(O)Let their eyes be darkened, so that they do not see;
And make their loins shake continually.
²⁴^(P)Pour out Your indignation upon them,
And let Your wrathful anger take hold of them.
²⁵^(Q)Let their dwelling place be desolate;
Let no one live in their tents.
²⁶For they persecute the ones ^(R)You have struck,
And talk of the grief of those You have wounded.
²⁷^(S)Add iniquity to their iniquity,
^(T)And let them not come into Your righteousness.
²⁸Let them ^(U)be blotted out of the book of the living,
^(V)And not be written with the righteous.

²⁹But I am poor and sorrowful;
Let Your salvation, O God, set me up on high.
³⁰^(W)I will praise the name of God with a song,
And will magnify Him with thanksgiving.
³¹^(X)This also shall please the Lord better than an ox or bull,
Which has horns and hooves.
³²^(Y)The humble shall see this and be glad;
And you who seek God, ^(Z)your hearts shall live.
³³For the Lord hears the poor,
And does not despise ^(AA)His prisoners.

³⁴^(AB)Let heaven and earth praise Him,
The seas ^(AC)and everything that moves in them.
³⁵^(AD)For God will save Zion
And build the cities of Judah,
That they may dwell there and possess it.
³⁶Also, ^(AE)the ^[h]descendants of His servants shall inherit it,
And those who love His name shall dwell in it.

70 Make haste, ^(AH)O God, to deliver me!
Make haste to help me, O Lord!

²^(AI)Let them be ashamed and confounded
Who seek my life;
Let them be ^[i]turned back and confused
Who desire my hurt.
³^(AJ)Let them be turned back because of their shame,
Who say, ^[j]“Aha, aha!”

⁴Let all those who seek You rejoice and be glad in You;
And let those who love Your salvation say continually,
“Let God be magnified!”

⁵^(AK)But I am poor and needy;
^(AL)Make haste to me, O God!
You are my help and my deliverer;
O Lord, do not delay.

Mark 11:1-27

The Triumphal Entry^(A)

11 Now ^(B)when they drew near Jerusalem, to ^[a]Bethphage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, He sent two of His disciples; ²and He said to them, “Go into the village opposite you; and as soon as you have entered it you will find a colt tied, on which no one has sat. Loose it and bring it. ³And if anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord has need of it,’ and immediately he will send it here.”

⁴So they went their way, and found ^[b]the colt tied by the door outside on the street, and they loosed it. ⁵But some of those who stood there said to them, “What are you doing, loosing the colt?”

⁶And they spoke to them just as Jesus had commanded. So they let them go. ⁷Then they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their clothes on it, and He sat on it. ⁸^(C)And many spread their clothes on the road, and others cut down leafy branches from the trees and spread them on the road. ⁹Then those who went before and those who followed cried out, saying:

“Hosanna!
^(D)‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’
¹⁰Blessed is the kingdom of our father David
That comes ^[c]in the name of the Lord!
^(E)Hosanna in the highest!”

¹¹^(F)And Jesus went into Jerusalem and into the temple. So when He had looked around at all things, as the hour was already late, He went out to Bethany with the twelve.

The Fig Tree Withered^(G)

¹²^(H)Now the next day, when they had come out from Bethany, He was hungry. ¹³^(I)And seeing from afar a fig tree having leaves, He went to see if perhaps He would find something on it. When He came to it, He found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. ¹⁴In response Jesus said to it, “Let no one eat fruit from you ever again.”

And His disciples heard it.

Jesus Cleanses the Temple^(J)

¹⁵^(K)So they came to Jerusalem. Then Jesus went into the temple and began to drive out those who bought and sold in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold ^(L)doves. ¹⁶And He would not allow anyone to carry wares through the temple. ¹⁷Then He taught, saying to them, “Is it not written, ^(M)‘My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations’? But you have made it a ^(N)‘den of thieves.’ ”

¹⁸And ^(O)the scribes and chief priests heard it and sought how they might destroy Him; for they feared Him, because ^(P)all the people were astonished at His teaching. ¹⁹When evening had come, He went out of the city.

The Lesson of the Withered Fig Tree^(Q)

²⁰^(R)Now in the morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots. ²¹And Peter, remembering, said to Him, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree which You cursed has withered away.”

²²So Jesus answered and said to them, “Have faith in God. ²³For ^(S)assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says. ²⁴Therefore I say to you, ^(T)whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them.

Forgiveness and Prayer^(U)

²⁵“And whenever you stand praying, ^(V)if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses. ²⁶^[d]But ^(W)if you do not forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your trespasses.”
