For God So Loved the World

¹⁶ “For ^(A)God so loved ^(B)the world,^{[a] (C)}that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not ^(D)perish but have eternal life.

¹⁷ But Jesus answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I am working.”

Jesus Is Equal with God

¹⁸ This was why the Jews ^(A)were seeking all the more to kill him, ^(B)because not only was he ^(C)breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God ^(D)his own Father, ^(E)making himself equal with God.

The Authority of the Son

¹⁹ So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, ^(F)the Son ^(G)can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father^[a] does, that the Son does likewise. ²⁰ For ^(H)the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And ^(I)greater works than these will he show him, so that ^(J)you may marvel. ²¹ For as the Father ^(K)raises the dead and ^(L)gives them life, so ^(M)also the Son gives life ^(N)to whom he will. ^22 (O)For the Father judges no one, but ^(P)has given all judgment to the Son, ²³ that all may honor the Son, just as they ^(Q)honor the Father. ^(R)Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. ²⁴ Truly, truly, I say to you, ^(S)whoever hears my word and ^(T)believes him who sent me has eternal life. He ^(U)does not come into judgment, but ^(V)has passed from death to life.

²⁵ “Truly, truly, I say to you, ^(W)an hour is coming, and is now here, when ^(X)the dead will hear ^(Y)the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear ^(Z)will live. ^26 (AA)For as the Father has life in himself, ^(AB)so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself.

¹² “Truly, truly, I say to you, ^(A)whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I ^(B)am going to the Father. ^13 (C)Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that ^(D)the Father may be glorified in the Son. ^14 (E)If you ask me^[a] anything in my name, I will do it.

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

^15 (F)“If you love me, you will ^(G)keep my commandments. ¹⁶ And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another ^(H)Helper,^[b] to be with you forever, ¹⁷ even ^(I)the Spirit of truth, ^(J)whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and ^(K)will be^[c] in you.

Children of God

²⁸ And now, little children, abide in him, so that ^(A)when he appears ^(B)we may have confidence and not shrink from him in shame at his ^(C)coming. ²⁹ If you know that ^(D)he is righteous, you may be sure that ^(E)everyone who practices righteousness has been born of him.

3 See ^(F)what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called ^(G)children of God; and so we are. The reason why ^(H)the world does not know us is that ^(I)it did not know him. ² Beloved, we are ^(J)God's children ^(K)now, and what we will be ^(L)has not yet appeared; but we know that ^(M)when he appears^{[a] (N)}we shall be like him, because ^(O)we shall see him as he is.

The Lord's Prayer

⁵ “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love ^(A)to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. ^(B)Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. ⁶ But when you pray, ^(C)go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. ^(D)And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

⁷ “And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as ^(E)the Gentiles do, for ^(F)they think that they will be heard ^(G)for their many words. ⁸ Do not be like them, ^(H)for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. ^9 (I)Pray then like this:

Spiritual Blessings in Christ

^3 (A)Blessed be ^(B)the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing ^(C)in the heavenly places, ^4 (D)even as he ^(E)chose us in him ^(F)before the foundation of the world, that we should be ^(G)holy and blameless before him. In love ^5 (H)he predestined us^[a] for ^(I)adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, ^(J)according to the purpose of his will, ^6 (K)to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in ^(L)the Beloved.
