²⁶ “But ^(A)when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, ^(B)he will bear witness about me. ²⁷ And ^(C)you also will bear witness, ^(D)because you have been with me ^(E)from the beginning.

16 “I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away. ^2 (F)They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, ^(G)the hour is coming when ^(H)whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God. ³ And they will do these things ^(I)because they have not known the Father, nor me. ⁴ But ^(J)I have said these things to you, that when ^(K)their hour comes you may remember that I told them to you.

The Work of the Holy Spirit

“I did not say these things to you from the beginning, ^(L)because I was with you. ⁵ But now ^(M)I am going to him who sent me, and ^(N)none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ ⁶ But because I have said these things to you, ^(O)sorrow has filled your heart. ⁷ Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for ^(P)if I do not go away, ^(Q)the Helper will not come to you. But ^(R)if ^(S)I go, ^(T)I will send him to you. ^8 (U)And when he comes, he will ^(V)convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: ⁹ concerning sin, ^(W)because they do not believe in me; ^10 (X)concerning righteousness, ^(Y)because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; ^11 (Z)concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world ^(AA)is judged.

¹² “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. ¹³ When ^(AB)the Spirit of truth comes, ^(AC)he will ^(AD)guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but ^(AE)whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. ¹⁴ He will ^(AF)glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. ^15 (AG)All that the Father has is mine; ^(AH)therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

The Creation of the World

1 In the ^(A)beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. ² The earth was ^(B)without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

Christ's Glory and the Prophetic Word

¹⁶ For we did not follow ^(A)cleverly devised ^(B)myths when we made known to you ^(C)the power and ^(D)coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but ^(E)we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. ¹⁷ For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, ^(F)“This is my beloved Son,^[a] with whom I am well pleased,” ¹⁸ we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on ^(G)the holy mountain. ¹⁹ And ^(H)we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention ^(I)as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until ^(J)the day ^(K)dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, ²⁰ knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone's own interpretation. ²¹ For ^(L)no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God ^(M)as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

You Must Be Born Again

3 Now there was a man of the Pharisees named ^(A)Nicodemus, ^(B)a ruler of the Jews. ² This man came to Jesus^{[a] (C)}by night and said to him, ^(D)“Rabbi, ^(E)we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do ^(F)unless God is with him.” ³ Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is ^(G)born ^(H)again^[b] he cannot ^(I)see the kingdom of God.” ⁴ Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?” ⁵ Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born ^(J)of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. ^6 (K)That which is born of the flesh is ^(L)flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.^{[c] 7 (M)}Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You^[d] must be born ^(N)again.’ ^8 (O)The wind^[e] blows ^(P)where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

One Body with Many Members

¹² For just as ^(A)the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, ^(B)so it is with Christ. ¹³ For ^(C)in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—^(D)Jews or Greeks, slaves^[a] or free—and ^(E)all were made to drink of one Spirit.

¹³ In him you also, when you heard ^(A)the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, ^(B)were sealed with the ^(C)promised Holy Spirit, ¹⁴ who is ^(D)the guarantee^[a] of our ^(E)inheritance until ^(F)we acquire ^(G)possession of it,^{[b] (H)}to the praise of his glory.

Thanksgiving and Prayer

¹⁵ For this reason, ^(I)because I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love^[c] toward all the saints, ¹⁶ I ^(J)do not cease to give thanks for you, ^(K)remembering you in my prayers, ¹⁷ that ^(L)the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, ^(M)may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, ^18 (N)having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is ^(O)the hope to which he has called you, what are ^(P)the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints,

⁹ You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact ^(A)the Spirit of God dwells in you. ^(B)Anyone who does not have ^(C)the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. ¹⁰ But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. ¹¹ If the Spirit of ^(D)him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus^[a] from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies ^(E)through his Spirit who dwells in you.

Keep in Step with the Spirit

¹⁶ But I say, ^(A)walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify ^(B)the desires of the flesh. ¹⁷ For ^(C)the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, ^(D)to keep you from doing the things you want to do. ¹⁸ But if you are ^(E)led by the Spirit, ^(F)you are not under the law. ¹⁹ Now ^(G)the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, ²⁰ idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, ^(H)divisions, ²¹ envy,^[a] drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that ^(I)those who do^[b] such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. ²² But ^(J)the fruit of the Spirit is ^(K)love, joy, peace, patience, ^(L)kindness, goodness, faithfulness, ^23 (M)gentleness, ^(N)self-control; ^(O)against such things there is no law. ²⁴ And those who belong to Christ Jesus ^(P)have crucified the flesh with its ^(Q)passions and desires.

²⁵ If we live by the Spirit, ^(R)let us also keep in step with the Spirit. ^26 (S)Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.

⁴ Now ^(A)there are varieties of gifts, but ^(B)the same Spirit; ⁵ and ^(C)there are varieties of service, but ^(D)the same Lord; ⁶ and there are varieties of activities, but it is ^(E)the same God who empowers them all in everyone. ^7 (F)To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. ⁸ For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of ^(G)wisdom, and to another the utterance of ^(H)knowledge according to the same Spirit, ⁹ to another ^(I)faith by the same Spirit, to another ^(J)gifts of healing by the one Spirit, ¹⁰ to another ^(K)the working of miracles, to another ^(L)prophecy, to another ^(M)the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another ^(N)various kinds of tongues, to another ^(O)the interpretation of tongues. ¹¹ All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, ^(P)who apportions to each one individually ^(Q)as he wills.
