The Faithful Have Vanished

To the choirmaster: according to The Sheminith.[a] A Psalm of David.

12 Save, O Lord, for (A)the godly one is gone;
    for the faithful have vanished from among the children of man.
Everyone (B)utters lies to his neighbor;
    with (C)flattering lips and (D)a double heart they speak.

May the Lord cut off all (E)flattering lips,
    the tongue that makes (F)great boasts,
those who say, “With our tongue we will prevail,
    our lips are with us; who is master over us?”

“Because (G)the poor are plundered, because the needy groan,
    (H)I will now arise,” says the Lord;
    “I will place him in the (I)safety for which he longs.”
(J)The words of the Lord are pure words,
    like silver refined in a furnace on the ground,
    purified seven times.

You, O Lord, will keep them;
    you will guard us[b] from this generation forever.
On every side the wicked prowl,
    as vileness is exalted among the children of man.

How Long, O Lord?

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.

13 (K)How long, O Lord? Will you (L)forget me forever?
    How long will you (M)hide your face from me?
How long must I take (N)counsel in my soul
    and have sorrow in my heart all the day?
How long shall my enemy be exalted over me?

(O)Consider and answer me, O Lord my God;
    (P)light up my eyes, lest (Q)I sleep the sleep of death,
(R)lest my enemy say, “I have prevailed over him,”
    lest my foes rejoice because I am (S)shaken.

But I have (T)trusted in your steadfast love;
    my heart shall (U)rejoice in your salvation.
I will sing to the Lord,
    because he has dealt bountifully with me.

The Fool Says, There Is No God

To the choirmaster. Of David.

14 (V)The (W)fool says in his heart, (X)“There is no God.”
    They are (Y)corrupt, they do abominable deeds;
    (Z)there is none who does good.

The Lord (AA)looks down from heaven on the children of man,
    to see if there are any who understand,[c]
    who (AB)seek after God.

They have all turned aside; together they have become (AC)corrupt;
    there is none who does good,
    not even one.

Have they no (AD)knowledge, all the evildoers
    who (AE)eat up my people as they eat bread
    and (AF)do not call upon the Lord?

There they are in great terror,
    for God is with (AG)the generation of the righteous.
You would shame the plans of the poor,
    but[d] the Lord is his (AH)refuge.

Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion!
    When the Lord (AI)restores the fortunes of his people,
    let Jacob rejoice, let Israel be glad.

28 So Jesus said to them, “When you have (A)lifted up the Son of Man, (B)then you will know that (C)I am he, and that (D)I do nothing on my own authority, but (E)speak just as the Father taught me. 29 And (F)he who sent me is with me. (G)He has not left me alone, for (H)I always do the things that are pleasing to him.” 30 As he was saying these things, (I)many believed in him.

The Truth Will Set You Free

31 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, (J)“If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32 and you will (K)know the truth, and the truth (L)will set you free.” 33 They answered him, (M)“We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?”

34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, (N)everyone who practices sin is a slave[a] to sin. 35 (O)The slave does not remain in the house forever; (P)the son remains forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. 37 I know that you are offspring of Abraham; yet (Q)you seek to kill me because my word finds no place in you. 38 (R)I speak of what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have heard (S)from your father.”

You Are of Your Father the Devil

39 They answered him, (T)“Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them, (U)“If you were Abraham's children, you would be doing the works Abraham did, 40 but now (V)you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth (W)that I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did. 41 You are doing the works your father did.” They said to him, (X)“We were not born of sexual immorality. We have (Y)one Father—even God.” 42 Jesus said to them, (Z)“If God were your Father, you would love me, for (AA)I came from God and (AB)I am here. (AC)I came not of my own accord, but (AD)he sent me. 43 (AE)Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot (AF)bear to hear my word. 44 (AG)You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. (AH)He was a murderer from the beginning, and (AI)does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. (AJ)When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. 45 But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me. 46 Which one of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me? 47 (AK)Whoever is of God hears the words of God. (AL)The reason why you do not hear them is that (AM)you are not of God.”

Before Abraham Was, I Am

48 The Jews answered him, “Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and (AN)have a demon?” 49 Jesus answered, “I do not have a demon, but (AO)I honor my Father, and you dishonor me. 50 Yet (AP)I do not seek my own glory; there is One who seeks it, and he is the judge. 51 Truly, truly, (AQ)I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never (AR)see death.” 52 The Jews said to him, “Now we know that you have a demon! (AS)Abraham died, as did the prophets, yet (AT)you say, ‘If anyone keeps my word, he will never (AU)taste death.’ 53 (AV)Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died? And the prophets died! Who do you make yourself out to be?” 54 Jesus answered, (AW)“If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. (AX)It is my Father who glorifies me, (AY)of whom you say, ‘He is our God.’[b] 55 But (AZ)you have not known him. (BA)I know him. If I were to say that I do not know him, I would be (BB)a liar (BC)like you, but I do know him and I keep his word. 56 (BD)Your father Abraham (BE)rejoiced (BF)that he would see my day. (BG)He saw it and was glad.” 57 So the Jews said to him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?”[c] 58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, (BH)I am.” 59 So (BI)they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple.
