Jesus Is Tested in the Wilderness^(A)

4 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted^[a](B) by the devil.^{(C) 2} After fasting forty days and forty nights,^(D) he was hungry. ³ The tempter^(E) came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God,^(F) tell these stones to become bread.”

⁴ Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’^[b]”^(G)

⁵ Then the devil took him to the holy city^(H) and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. ⁶ “If you are the Son of God,”^(I) he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written:

⁷ Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’^[d]”^(K)

⁸ Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. ⁹ “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.”

¹⁰ Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan!^(L) For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’^[e]”^(M)

¹¹ Then the devil left him,^(N) and angels came and attended him.^(O)

⁸ Keep this Book of the Law^(A) always on your lips;^(B) meditate^(C) on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.^(D)

¹³ Therefore put on the full armor of God,^(A) so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. ¹⁴ Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist,^(B) with the breastplate of righteousness in place,^{(C) 15} and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.^{(D) 16} In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith,^(E) with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.^{(F) 17} Take the helmet of salvation^(G) and the sword of the Spirit,^(H) which is the word of God.^(I)

¹⁸ And pray in the Spirit^(J) on all occasions^(K) with all kinds of prayers and requests.^(L) With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying^(M) for all the Lord’s people.

¹⁶ Let the message of Christ^(A) dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom^(B) through psalms,^(C) hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.^(D)

¹² For the word of God^(A) is alive^(B) and active.^(C) Sharper than any double-edged sword,^(D) it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.^(E)

¹³ while evildoers and impostors will go from bad to worse,^(A) deceiving and being deceived.^{(B) 14} But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it,^{(C) 15} and how from infancy^(D) you have known the Holy Scriptures,^(E) which are able to make you wise^(F) for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. ¹⁶ All Scripture is God-breathed^(G) and is useful for teaching,^(H) rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,^{(I) 17} so that the servant of God^[a](J) may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.^(K)

²⁰ Above all, you must understand^(A) that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. ²¹ For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God^(B) as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.^(C)

²¹ For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.^{(A) 22} Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools^(B)
