23 And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, and they all drank from it. 24 And He said to them, “This is My (A)blood of the (B)covenant, which is being poured out for many. 25 Truly I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine again, until that day when I drink it, new, in the kingdom of God.”

26 (C)And after singing a [a]hymn, they went out to (D)the Mount of Olives.

27 (E)And Jesus *said to them, “You will all [b]fall away, because it is written: ‘(F)I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’ 28 But after I am raised, (G)I will go ahead of you to Galilee.” 29 But Peter said to Him, “Even if they all [c]fall away, yet I will not!” 30 And Jesus *said to him, “Truly I say to you, that [d](H)this very night, before (I)a rooster crows twice, you yourself will deny Me three times.” 31 But [e]Peter repeatedly said insistently, “Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You!” And they all were saying the same thing as well.

Jesus in Gethsemane

32 (J)They *came to a place named [f]Gethsemane; and He *said to His disciples, “Sit here until I have prayed.” 33 And He *took with Him Peter, [g]James, and John, and began to be very (K)distressed and troubled. 34 And He *said to them, (L)My soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death; remain here and [h]keep watch.” 35 And He went a little beyond them, and fell to the ground and began praying that if it were possible, (M)the hour might [i]pass Him by. 36 And He was saying, (N)Abba! [j]Father! All things are possible for You; remove this cup from Me; (O)yet not what I will, but what You will.” 37 And He *came and *found them sleeping, and *said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Could you not [k]keep watch for one hour? 38 [l](P)Keep watching and praying, so that you will not come into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 39 And again He went away and prayed, saying the same [m]words. 40 And again He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy; and they did not know what to say in reply to Him. 41 And He *came the third time, and *said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? That is enough. (Q)The hour has come; behold, the Son of Man is being [n]betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42 Get up, let’s go; behold, the one who is betraying Me is near!”

Betrayal and Arrest

43 (R)And immediately, while He was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, *came up, [o]accompanied by a crowd with swords and clubs who were from the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders. 44 Now he who was betraying Him had given them a signal, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the one; arrest Him and lead Him away [p]under guard.” 45 And after coming, Judas immediately went to Him and *said, “(S)Rabbi!” and kissed Him.

23 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it.(A)

24 “This is my blood of the[a] covenant,(B) which is poured out for many,” he said to them. 25 “Truly I tell you, I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”(C)

26 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.(D)

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial(E)

27 “You will all fall away,” Jesus told them, “for it is written:

“‘I will strike the shepherd,
and the sheep will be scattered.’[b](F)

28 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”(G)

29 Peter declared, “Even if all fall away, I will not.”

30 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “today—yes, tonight—before the rooster crows twice[c] you yourself will disown me three times.”(H)

31 But Peter insisted emphatically, “Even if I have to die with you,(I) I will never disown you.” And all the others said the same.

Gethsemane(J)

32 They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 He took Peter, James and John(K) along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. 34 “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,”(L) he said to them. “Stay here and keep watch.”

35 Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour(M) might pass from him. 36 “Abba,[d] Father,”(N) he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup(O) from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”(P)

37 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour? 38 Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.(Q) The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”(R)

39 Once more he went away and prayed the same thing. 40 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him.

41 Returning the third time, he said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour(S) has come. Look, the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. 42 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”

Jesus Arrested(T)

43 Just as he was speaking, Judas,(U) one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders.

44 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.” 45 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Rabbi!”(V) and kissed him.
