Beware of the Leaven of the Pharisees

12 In the meantime, (A)when so many thousands of the people had gathered together that they were trampling one another, he began to say to his disciples first, (B)“Beware of (C)the leaven of the Pharisees, (D)which is hypocrisy. 2 (E)Nothing is covered up that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. 3 Therefore whatever you have said in the dark shall be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in (F)private rooms shall be proclaimed on (G)the housetops.

Have No Fear

4 “I tell you, my friends, (H)do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more that they can do. 5 But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him (I)who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell.[a] Yes, I tell you, fear him! 6 Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies?[b] And (J)not one of them is forgotten before God. 7 Why, (K)even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; (L)you are of more value than many sparrows.

Acknowledge Christ Before Men

8 “And I tell you, (M)everyone who acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man also will acknowledge (N)before the angels of God, 9 but (O)the one who denies me before men (P)will be denied (Q)before the angels of God. 10 And (R)everyone who speaks a word (S)against the Son of Man (T)will be forgiven, but the one who (U)blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. 11 (V)And when they (W)bring you before the synagogues and (X)the rulers and (Y)the authorities, (Z)do not be anxious about how you should defend yourself or what you should say, 12 (AA)for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.”

The Parable of the Rich Fool

13 (AB)Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” 14 But he said to him, (AC)“Man, (AD)who made me a judge or arbitrator over you?” 15 And he said to them, (AE)“Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” 16 And he told them a parable, saying, (AF)“The land of a rich man produced plentifully, 17 and he thought to himself, (AG)‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ 18 And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my (AH)barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. 19 And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up (AI)for many years; relax, (AJ)eat, drink, be merry.”’ 20 But God said to him, (AK)‘Fool! (AL)This night (AM)your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, (AN)whose will they be?’ 21 So is the one (AO)who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”

Do Not Be Anxious

22 And he said to his disciples, (AP)“Therefore I tell you, (AQ)do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat, nor about your body, what you will put on. 23 For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. 24 (AR)Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. (AS)Of how much more value are you than the birds! 25 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his (AT)span of life?[c] 26 If then you are not able to do as small a thing as that, why are you anxious about the rest? 27 Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, (AU)even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 28 But if God so clothes the grass, which is alive in the field today, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you, (AV)O you of little faith! 29 And do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, nor (AW)be worried. 30 For (AX)all the nations of the world seek after these things, and (AY)your Father knows that you need them. 31 Instead, (AZ)seek (BA)his[d] kingdom, (BB)and these things will be added to you.

32 (BC)“Fear not, little (BD)flock, for (BE)it is your Father's good pleasure to give you (BF)the kingdom. 33 (BG)Sell your possessions, and (BH)give to the needy. (BI)Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with (BJ)a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys. 34 (BK)For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

You Must Be Ready

35 (BL)“Stay dressed for action[e] and (BM)keep your lamps burning, 36 and be like men who are (BN)waiting for their master to come home from the wedding feast, so that they may open the door to him at once when he comes and (BO)knocks. 37 (BP)Blessed are those servants[f] whom the master finds (BQ)awake when he comes. Truly, I say to you, (BR)he will dress himself for service and (BS)have them recline at table, and he will come and serve them. 38 If he comes in the second watch, or in the third, and finds them awake, blessed are those servants! 39 (BT)But know this, that if the master of the house had known at what hour (BU)the thief was coming, he[g] would not have left his house to be broken into. 40 You also must be (BV)ready, for (BW)the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”

41 Peter said, “Lord, (BX)are you telling this parable for us or for all?” 42 And the Lord said, “Who then is (BY)the faithful and (BZ)wise (CA)manager, whom his master will set over his household, to give them their portion of food at the proper time? 43 (CB)Blessed is that servant[h] whom his master will find so doing when he comes. 44 Truly, I say to you, (CC)he will set him over all his possessions. 45 But if that servant says to himself, ‘My master (CD)is delayed in coming,’ and begins to beat the male and female servants, and to eat and drink and (CE)get drunk, 46 the master of that servant will come (CF)on a day when he does not expect him and (CG)at an hour he does not know, and will cut him in pieces and put him with the unfaithful. 47 (CH)And that servant who (CI)knew his master's will but (CJ)did not get ready (CK)or act according to his will, will receive a (CL)severe beating. 48 (CM)But the one who did not know, and did what deserved a beating, (CN)will receive a light beating. (CO)Everyone to whom much was given, of him much will be required, and from him to whom they entrusted much, they will demand the more.

Not Peace, but Division

49 (CP)“I came to cast fire on the earth, and would that it were already kindled! 50 (CQ)I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how (CR)great is my distress until it is accomplished! 51 (CS)Do you think that I have come to give peace on earth? (CT)No, I tell you, but rather division. 52 For from now on in one house there will be five divided, three against two and two against three. 53 They will be divided, (CU)father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”

Interpreting the Time

54 He also said to the crowds, (CV)“When you see (CW)a cloud rising in the west, you say at once, ‘A shower is coming.’ And so it happens. 55 And (CX)when you see the south wind blowing, you say, ‘There will be (CY)scorching heat,’ and it happens. 56 You hypocrites! (CZ)You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time?

Settle with Your Accuser

57 “And why (DA)do you not judge (DB)for yourselves what is right? 58 (DC)As you go with your accuser before the magistrate, make an effort to settle with him on the way, lest he drag you to the judge, and the judge hand you over to the officer, and the officer put you in prison. 59 I tell you, (DD)you will never get out until you have paid the very last (DE)penny.”[i]

12 (A)Nel frattempo la gente si era riunita a migliaia[a], così da calpestarsi gli uni gli altri. Allora Gesù cominciò a dire prima di tutto ai suoi discepoli: «Guardatevi dal lievito dei farisei, che è ipocrisia. 2 Ma non c’è niente di nascosto che non sarà svelato, né di segreto che non sarà conosciuto. 3 Perciò tutto quello che avete detto nelle tenebre sarà udito nella luce, e quel che avete detto all’orecchio nelle stanze interne sarà proclamato sui tetti. 4 Ma a voi, che siete miei amici, io dico: non temete quelli che uccidono il corpo, ma che oltre a questo non possono fare di più. 5 Io vi mostrerò chi dovete temere. Temete colui che, dopo aver ucciso, ha il potere di gettare nella geenna. Sì, vi dico, temete lui. 6 Cinque passeri non si vendono per due soldi? Eppure non uno di essi è dimenticato davanti a Dio; 7 anzi, perfino i capelli del vostro capo sono tutti contati. Non temete [dunque]; voi valete più di molti passeri.

8 Or io vi dico: chiunque mi riconoscerà davanti agli uomini, anche il Figlio dell’uomo riconoscerà lui davanti agli angeli di Dio; 9 ma chi mi rinnegherà davanti agli uomini, sarà rinnegato davanti agli angeli di Dio.

10 E chiunque parlerà contro il Figlio dell’uomo sarà perdonato, ma chi avrà bestemmiato contro lo Spirito Santo non sarà perdonato.

11 Quando poi vi condurranno davanti alle sinagoghe, ai magistrati e alle autorità, non preoccupatevi di come o di cosa risponderete a vostra difesa, o di cosa dovrete dire; 12 perché lo Spirito Santo vi insegnerà in quel momento stesso quello che dovrete dire».

Il ricco stolto

13 (B)Or uno della folla gli disse: «Maestro, di’ a mio fratello che divida con me l’eredità». 14 Ma Gesù gli rispose: «Uomo, chi mi ha costituito su di voi giudice o spartitore?» 15 Poi disse loro: «State attenti e guardatevi da ogni avarizia[b]; perché non è dall’abbondanza dei beni che uno possiede che egli ha la sua vita». 16 E disse loro una parabola: «La campagna di un uomo ricco fruttò abbondantemente; 17 egli ragionava così fra sé: “Che farò, poiché non ho dove riporre i miei raccolti?” E disse: 18 “Questo farò: demolirò i miei granai, ne costruirò altri più grandi, vi raccoglierò tutto il mio grano e i miei beni[c], 19 e dirò all’anima mia: ‘Anima, tu hai molti beni ammassati per molti anni; ripòsati, mangia, bevi, divèrtiti’”. 20 Ma Dio gli disse: “Stolto, questa notte stessa l’anima tua ti sarà ridomandata; e quello che hai preparato, di chi sarà?” 21 Così è di chi accumula tesori per sé e non è ricco davanti a Dio».

Le preoccupazioni

22 (C)Poi disse ai {suoi} discepoli: «Perciò vi dico: non siate in ansia per la vita [vostra], di quel che mangerete, né per il corpo, di che vi vestirete; 23 poiché[d] la vita è più del nutrimento, e il corpo più del vestito. 24 Osservate i corvi: non seminano, non mietono, non hanno dispensa né granaio, eppure Dio li nutre. E voi, quanto più degli uccelli valete! 25 E chi di voi può con la propria ansietà aggiungere un’ora sola alla durata della sua vita[e]? 26 Se dunque non potete fare nemmeno ciò che è minimo, perché vi affannate per il resto? 27 Guardate i gigli come crescono: non faticano e non filano; eppure io vi dico che neanche Salomone, con tutta la sua gloria, si vestì come uno di loro. 28 Ora se Dio riveste così l’erba, che oggi è nel campo e domani è gettata nel forno, quanto più vestirà voi, gente di poca fede! 29 Anche voi non state a cercare che cosa mangerete e che cosa berrete[f], e non state in ansia! 30 Perché è la gente del mondo che ricerca tutte queste cose, ma il Padre vostro sa che ne avete bisogno. 31 Cercate piuttosto il suo regno, e queste cose[g] vi saranno date in più.

32 Non temere, piccolo gregge, perché al Padre vostro è piaciuto di darvi il regno.

33 Vendete i vostri beni e dateli in elemosina; fatevi delle borse che non invecchiano, un tesoro inesauribile nei cieli, dove ladro non si avvicina e tignola non rode. 34 Perché dov’è il vostro tesoro, lì sarà anche il vostro cuore.

Parabola e avvertimento della seconda venuta del Cristo

35 (D)«I vostri fianchi siano cinti e le vostre lampade accese; 36 siate simili a quelli che aspettano il loro padrone quando torna[h] dalle nozze, per aprirgli appena giungerà e busserà. 37 Beati quei servi che il padrone, arrivando, troverà vigilanti! In verità io vi dico che egli si rimboccherà le vesti, li farà mettere a tavola e passerà a servirli. 38 Se giungerà alla seconda o alla terza vigilia[i] e li troverà così, beati loro[j]! 39 Sappiate questo, che se il padrone di casa conoscesse a che ora verrà il ladro, [veglierebbe e] non si lascerebbe scassinare la casa. 40 Anche voi [dunque] siate pronti, perché il Figlio dell’uomo verrà nell’ora che non pensate».

I due servi

41 (E)Pietro [gli] disse: «Signore, questa parabola la dici per noi o anche per tutti?» 42 Il Signore rispose: «Chi è dunque l’amministratore fedele e prudente, che il padrone costituirà sui suoi domestici per dar loro a suo tempo la loro porzione[k] di viveri? 43 Beato quel servo che il padrone, al suo arrivo, troverà intento a far così. 44 In verità vi dico che lo costituirà su tutti i suoi beni. 45 Ma se quel servo dice in cuor suo: “Il mio padrone tarda a venire”, e comincia a battere i servi e le serve, a mangiare, bere e ubriacarsi, 46 il padrone di quel servo verrà nel giorno che non se lo aspetta e nell’ora che non sa, e lo punirà severamente[l], e gli assegnerà la sorte degli infedeli. 47 Quel servo che ha conosciuto la volontà del suo padrone e non ha preparato né fatto secondo la sua volontà[m], riceverà molte percosse; 48 ma colui che non l’ha conosciuta e ha fatto cose degne di percosse, ne riceverà poche. A chi molto è stato dato, molto sarà richiesto; e a chi molto è stato affidato, tanto più si richiederà.

Cristo, causa di divisione

49 (F)«Io sono venuto ad accendere un fuoco sulla terra; e che mi resta da desiderare, se già è acceso[n]? 50 Vi è un battesimo del quale devo essere battezzato, e sono angosciato finché non sia compiuto! 51 Voi pensate che io sia venuto a portar pace sulla terra? No, vi dico, ma piuttosto divisione; 52 perché da ora in avanti, se vi sono cinque persone in una casa, saranno divise tre contro due e due contro tre; 53 saranno divisi il padre contro il figlio e il figlio contro il padre; la madre contro la figlia e la figlia contro la madre; la suocera contro la nuora e la nuora contro la suocera».

54 (G)Diceva ancora alle folle: «Quando vedete una nuvola venire su da ponente, voi dite subito: “Viene la pioggia”, e così avviene. 55 Quando sentite soffiare lo scirocco, dite: “Farà caldo”, e così è. 56 Ipocriti! L’aspetto della terra e del cielo sapete riconoscerlo; come mai non sapete riconoscere questo tempo?[o]

57 Perché non giudicate da voi stessi ciò che è giusto? 58 Quando vai con il tuo avversario davanti al magistrato, fa’ di tutto mentre sei per via per accordarti con lui, perché non ti porti davanti al giudice e il giudice ti consegni all’esecutore giudiziario, e l’esecutore ti metta in prigione. 59 Io ti dico che non uscirai di là, finché non avrai pagato fino all’ultimo centesimo[p]».

12 Отож, коли зібрався багатотисячний натовп, аж топтали один одного, Ісус почав говорити спершу до Своїх учнів: «Остерігайтеся фарисейської закваски—їх лицемірства. 2 Немає нічого прихованого, що не відкриється, і нічого таємного, що не стане відомим. 3 Тому все, що ви сказали у пітьмі[a], буде почуте при світлі[b]. І те, що ви прошепотіли комусь на вухо в замкненій кімнаті, проголошуйте, щоб усі почули».

Бійтеся Бога, не людей

(Мт. 10:28-31)

4 Після того Ісус наказав людям: «Але кажу вам, друзі Мої, більше не бійтеся тих, хто може вбити тіло ваше, але більш нічого вдіяти не здатні. 5 Я покажу, кого вам слід боятися: бійтеся Бога, Який вбивши, має владу ввергнути вас у пекло. Тож кажу вам: Його й бійтеся.

6 Чи не за два гроші продаються п’ять горобців? Та жодного з них Бог не забуде. 7 Господь навіть знає скільки волосся на головах ваших! То ж не бійтеся—ви значно важливіші, ніж зграя горобців».

Не соромтеся своєї віри

(Мт. 10:32-33; 12:32; 10:19-20)

8 «Не соромтеся віри своєї. І ще скажу вам: кожного, хто визнає Мене перед людьми, Син Людський також визнає[c] перед Ангелами Божими. 9 Якщо ж хтось зречеться Мене перед людьми, того і Син Людський зречеться перед Ангелами Божими. 10 Тому кажу Я вам, чоловік може отримати прощення всіх своїх гріхів та блюзнірств, що він мовить проти Бога, але той, хто поганить ім’я Духа Святого, не матиме прощення. 11 Коли ж вас поведуть на суд до синагоги перед можновладцями й правителями, не турбуйтеся про те, як вам виправдовуватись і що матимете казати. 12 Дух Святий у належний час підкаже вам правильні слова».

Притча про багатія

13 Хтось із натовпу попросив Його: «Вчителю, скажи моєму братові, щоб поділився зі мною батьковою спадщиною!» 14 Та Ісус мовив до нього: «Чоловіче, хто ставив мене за суддю або посередника між вами?» 15 І звернувся Ісус до всіх присутніх: «Пильнуйте себе, остерігайтеся зажерливості, бо не наслідуватиме людина життя від майна свого».

16 І розповів Ісус притчу: «В одного багатого чоловіка земля добре родила. 17 Він думав собі: „Що ж мені робити, адже я не маю де зберігати врожай?” 18 А потім вирішив: „я розберу свої клуні й збудую нові, більші. Та й звезу туди весь урожай і все своє добро”. 19 Тоді я скажу собі: „Я маю удосталь добра на багато років. То ж більше не перейматимуся я клопотами, та тільки буду їсти, пити та тішитися”.

20 Але Бог сказав йому: „Нерозумний чоловіче, цієї ночі ти втратиш своє життя. Кому дістанеться добро, що ти надбав?” 21 Отак буває з тими, хто збирає собі земні скарби, та в Божих очах вони не багатіють».

Дбайте насамперед про Царство Небесне

(Мт. 6:25-34, 19-21)

22 Тоді Ісус сказав Своїм учням: «Отже, кажу Я вам: не піклуйтеся про їжу та одяг, аби підтримати життя своє. 23 Напевне, життя є важливіше їжі, а тіло—одягу! 24 Погляньте на птахів: вони не сіють, не жнуть, не збирають зерна до комори, але ж Господь годує їх. А наскільки ж ви, люди, важливіші за птахів!

25 Ніхто з вас не зможе хвилюванням своїм подовжити життя своє хоча б на годину. 26 Якщо ж навіть на таку дрібничку ви не здатні, то навіщо ж переймаєтеся всім іншим? 27 Погляньте, як ростуть дикі квіти: вони не працюють, не шиють одягу собі. Та ж кажу вам, що й Соломон у розквіті слави своєї не вдягався у такі вишукані шати, як вони. 28 Якщо Бог одягає в таку розкіш траву польову, що сьогодні росте, а завтра потрапить у вогонь, то наскільки ж певніше одягне Він вас, о маловіри!

29 Тож не піклуйтеся й не переймайтеся, що їстимете і що питимете. 30 То лише погани увесь час дбають про таке, але ж Батько ваш знає, чого ви потребуєте.

31 Натомість, дбайте насамперед про Царство Боже, й тоді усе інше Господь неодмінно вам надасть. 32 Не бійся, отаро мала, бо Отцеві вашому було приємно дати вам Царство Своє. 33 Продайте майно своє і роздайте гроші бідним. Заводьте собі гаманці, що не старіють, тобто збирайте скарби неминущі на Небі, де їх злодій не дістане й міль не сточить. 34 Бо де багатство ваше, там і серце ваше буде».

Притча про доброго слугу

(Мт. 24:42-44)

35 «Будьте завжди напоготові, не гасіть світла. 36 Будьте такі ж, як слуги, які чекають повернення хазяїна з весільного бенкету, щоб, коли він прийде й постукає в двері, негайно йому відчинити. 37 Щасливі ті слуги, яких господар застане напоготові, коли прийде. Правду кажу вам: тоді він сам підпережеться, посадить слуг за стіл і прислуговуватиме їм. 38 Навіть якщо він з’явиться опівночі або пізніше, щасливі ті слуги, які чекатимуть на нього.

39 Та будьте певні: якщо б господар знав, о котрій годині прокрадеться злодій, то пильнував би й не дозволив тому вдертися до хати. 40 Ось чому й вам слід бути напоготові, бо Син Людський прийде тоді, коли ви Його не чекатимете».

Будьте мудрими слугами

41 Тоді Петро запитав: «Господи, цю притчу Ти розповів для нас чи для всіх?» 42 Господь відповів йому: «А хто є тим вірним і розсудливим слугою, якого господар поставив над усіма іншими слугами, щоб він вчасно годував їх. 43 Щасливий той слуга, якого хазяїн застане в ту мить, коли він саме виконуватиме свій обов’язок. 44 Істинно кажу вам, що господар призначить його управляти своїм маєтком.

45-46 Уявіть собі навпаки, поганого слугу, який говорить сам собі: „Мій господар забарився”,—і тоді почне бити інших слуг: чоловіків і жінок, почне об’їдатися й пиячити, та господар слуги повернеться того дня, коли той його не чекатиме, і тієї години, що слуга не сподіватиметься, та жорстоко покарає[d] його і призначить йому місце серед непокірних. 47 Слуга, який знає волю господаря свого, але не завжди готовий виконати її, і не робить того, чого вимагає хазяїн, буде суворо покараний.

48 Тому ж, хто не знав волі господаревої та вдіяв щось проти неї, кара буде меншою. Бо кому більше дано, від того більше й очікується. Люди зазвичай вимогливіші до тих, кому вони багато довірили».

Ісус прийшов, щоб розділити людей

(Мт. 10:34-36)

49 «Я прийшов, щоб запалити вогонь на землі. І як же Я прагну, щоб він мерщій розгорівся! 50 Я маю прийняти хрещення[e], і як тяжко буде, доки це не сповниться! 51 Ви думаєте, що Я прийшов, щоб принести мир на землю? Ні! Кажу вам, Я прийшов, щоб розділити людей.

52 Кажу так, бо відтепер п’ятеро членів однієї родини повстануть один проти одного: троє повстануть проти двох, а двоє—проти трьох.

53 Вони будуть розділені:
    батько проти сина, а син проти батька;
мати проти дочки, а дочка проти матері;
    свекруха проти невістки, а невістка проти свекрухи».

54 І промовив Ісус до людей: «Коли ви бачите, як з заходу надходить хмара, ви тут же кажете: „Дощ збирається”. І справді згодом починає дощити. 55 Коли ж налітає південний вітер, ви кажете: „Буде спека”. І справді настає засушлива погода. 56 Лицеміри! Ви знаєте, як розтлумачити різноманітні явища на землі й на небі. То чому ж так сталося, що ви не здатні розтлумачити події нинішніх часів?»

Завжди намагайтеся владнати суперечки миром

(Мт. 5:25-26)

57 «Чому ти не можеш розсудити для себе, що є справедливим? 58 Якщо хтось позиває тебе до суду, намагайся владнати з ним справу перш, ніж ви туди прийдете. А як не залагодите, то стояти вам перед суддею, та той може віддати тебе у руки вартових і кинути тебе до в’язниці. 59 Повір, не вийти тобі звідти, доки не сплатиш усе, що заборгував до останнього грошу».
