28 God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth,(A) and subdue it. Rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, and every creature that crawls[a] on the earth.” 29 God also said, “Look, I have given you every seed-bearing plant on the surface of the entire earth and every tree whose fruit contains seed. This food will be for you,(B) 30 for all the wildlife of the earth, for every bird of the sky, and for every creature that crawls on the earth—everything having the breath of life in it. I have given every green plant for food.”(C) And it was so. 31 God saw all that He had made, and it was very good.(D) Evening came and then morning: the sixth day.

So the heavens and the earth and everything in them[b] were completed.(E) By the seventh[c] day God completed His work that He had done, and He rested[d] on the seventh day from all His work that He had done.(F) God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy, for on it He rested(G) from His work of creation.[e](H)

Man and Woman in the Garden

These are the records(I) of the heavens and the earth, concerning their creation at the time[f] that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens. No shrub of the field(J) had yet grown on the land,[g] and no plant of the field had yet sprouted, for the Lord God had not made it rain on the land, and there was no man to work the ground. But water would come out of the ground and water the entire surface of the land. Then the Lord God formed the man out of the dust from the ground(K) and breathed the breath of life into his nostrils,(L) and the man became a living being.(M)

The Lord God planted a garden in Eden, in the east,(N) and there He placed the man He had formed. The Lord God caused to grow out of the ground every tree pleasing in appearance and good for food, including the tree of life in the middle of the garden,(O) as well as the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.(P)

10 A river went[h] out from Eden to water the garden. From there it divided and became the source of four rivers.[i] 11 The name of the first is Pishon, which flows through the entire land of Havilah,[j](Q) where there is gold. 12 Gold from that land is pure;[k] bdellium[l] and onyx[m] are also there. 13 The name of the second river is Gihon, which flows through the entire land of Cush. 14 The name of the third river is the Tigris,(R) which runs east of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.(S)

15 The Lord God took the man and placed him in the garden of Eden to work it and watch over it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree of the garden,(T) 17 but you must not eat[n] from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for on the day you eat from it, you will certainly die.”(U) 18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper as his complement.”(V) 19 So the Lord God formed out of the ground every wild animal and every bird of the sky, and brought each to the man to see what he would call it.(W) And whatever the man called a living creature, that was its name. 20 The man gave names to all the livestock, to the birds of the sky, and to every wild animal; but for the man[o] no helper was found as his complement. 21 So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to come over the man,(X) and he slept. God took one of his ribs and closed the flesh at that place. 22 Then the Lord God made the rib He had taken from the man into a woman and brought her to the man.(Y)

Adam and Eve

This is the account(R) of the heavens and the earth when they were created,(S) when the Lord God made the earth and the heavens.

Now no shrub had yet appeared on the earth[a] and no plant had yet sprung up,(T) for the Lord God had not sent rain on the earth(U) and there was no one to work the ground, but streams[b] came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground. Then the Lord God formed(V) a man[c](W) from the dust(X) of the ground(Y) and breathed into his nostrils the breath(Z) of life,(AA) and the man became a living being.(AB)

Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden;(AC) and there he put the man he had formed. The Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees(AD) that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life(AE) and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.(AF)

10 A river(AG) watering the garden flowed from Eden;(AH) from there it was separated into four headwaters. 11 The name of the first is the Pishon; it winds through the entire land of Havilah,(AI) where there is gold. 12 (The gold of that land is good; aromatic resin[d](AJ) and onyx are also there.) 13 The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the entire land of Cush.[e] 14 The name of the third river is the Tigris;(AK) it runs along the east side of Ashur. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.(AL)

15 The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden(AM) to work it and take care of it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden;(AN) 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil,(AO) for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”(AP)

18 The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”(AQ)

19 Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals(AR) and all the birds in the sky.(AS) He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called(AT) each living creature,(AU) that was its name. 20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals.

But for Adam[f] no suitable helper(AV) was found. 21 So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep;(AW) and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs[g] and then closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib[h](AX) he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.
