Mourning for the Pierced One

¹⁰ And I will pour out a spirit of compassion and supplication on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem so that, when they look on the one^[a] whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him as one mourns for an only child and weep bitterly over him as one weeps over a firstborn.^(A)

So it is to be. Amen.^(A)

²⁹ and I will never again hide my face from them, when I pour out my spirit upon the house of Israel, says the Lord God.^(A)

God’s Spirit Poured Out

³³ Being therefore exalted at^[a] the right hand of God and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you see and hear.^(A)

³⁴ Instead, one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once blood and water came out.^{(A) 35} (He who saw this has testified so that you also may believe. His testimony is true, and he knows^[a] that he tells the truth, so that you also may continue^[b] to believe.)^{(B) 36} These things occurred so that the scripture might be fulfilled, “None of his bones shall be broken.”^{(C) 37} And again another passage of scripture says, “They will look on the one whom they have pierced.”^(D)

¹⁸ Pray in the Spirit at all times in every prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert and always persevere in supplication for all the saints.^(A)

²⁶ Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness, for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes^[a] with groanings too deep for words.^(A)
