1 Tiago, ao serviço de Deus e do Senhor Jesus Cristo, saúda as doze tribos de Israel espalhadas por diversas partes do mundo.

Fé durante as provações

²Meus irmãos, considerem-se felizes, quando tiverem de passar por diversas provações. ³Porque se a vossa fé for posta à prova, tornar-se-á mais perseverante. ⁴Que ela resista pois até ao fim, e assim a vossa formação se completará, com uma conduta íntegra, e serão maduros espiritualmente.

⁵E se alguém tem falta da sabedoria necessária, peça-a a Deus, que está sempre pronto a dar generosamente, sem a menor censura, e lhe será dada. ⁶Mas que esse pedido seja feito com fé, na certeza da resposta. Porque quem se dirige a Deus duvidando é semelhante às ondas do mar levadas pelos ventos, lançadas de um lado para o outro. ^7-8Uma pessoa assim é indecisa e instável, e inconstante em todos os seus atos. Não pense, por isso, que receberá alguma coisa do Senhor.

⁹Quanto aos crentes de condição social mais humilde, sintam-se contentes porque Deus os tem exaltado. ¹⁰Por outro lado, o rico deve sentir-se animado quando o Senhor o reduz à sua justa condição humana, pois ele passará como a flor do campo. ¹¹Quando o Sol aquece na força, ela seca e cai, e a sua beleza desaparece. Assim são os ricos no seu luxo.

¹²Feliz aquele que resiste à prova, porque depois receberá a coroa da vida que o Senhor promete aos que o amam. ¹³Que ninguém, perante a tentação, diga que é Deus quem o está a tentar. Porque Deus não está sujeito à ação do mal e, por isso, nunca poderia tentar ninguém. ¹⁴Quando uma pessoa é tentada, são os seus próprios desejos maus que a seduzem. ¹⁵Depois, essa maldade, se lhe cedemos, gera o pecado que, por sua vez, produz a morte. ¹⁶Portanto, não se deixem enganar, queridos irmãos.

¹⁷É de Deus que nos vem tudo o que é bom e perfeito. Ele que é o Criador de toda a luz e nele não há sombra, nem mudança. ¹⁸E foi por um ato da sua vontade que nos fez renascer, por meio da palavra da verdade, e nos tornámos os primeiros frutos da sua nova criação.

Praticantes da palavra

¹⁹Saibam isto, irmãos: é melhor ouvir muito e falar pouco e também ser lento a irritar-se. ²⁰Porque não é com irritação que se cumpre a justiça de Deus.

²¹Por isso, desembaracem-se de tudo o que é sujo e mau e recebam, com um espírito dócil, a palavra que foi semeada nos vossos corações e que pode salvar as vossas almas.

²²Cumpram, efetivamente, o que a palavra vos diz e não se limitem a ouvi-la. De outra forma, correm o risco de se iludirem. ²³Porque quem se contenta em ouvir a palavra de Deus e não procura pô-la em ação é como alguém que se observa ao espelho. ²⁴Assim que se afasta, esquece-se de como era a sua imagem. ²⁵Aquele, porém, que presta atenção à lei perfeita de Deus, que nos torna livres, não sendo um ouvinte que facilmente esquece, mas que cumpre o que esta lhe diz, esse será feliz naquilo que faz.

²⁶Se alguém diz ser religioso, mas não é capaz de travar a sua língua, engana-se a si mesmo. A sua religião não lhe vale de nada. ²⁷A verdadeira religião, aos olhos de Deus, pura e sem falhas, consiste em amparar os órfãos e as viúvas nas suas tribulações. Consiste também em não se deixar influenciar pela corrupção do mundo.

Faith Under Pressure

^2-4Consider it a sheer gift, friends, when tests and challenges come at you from all sides. You know that under pressure, your faith-life is forced into the open and shows its true colors. So don’t try to get out of anything prematurely. Let it do its work so you become mature and well-developed, not deficient in any way.

^5-8If you don’t know what you’re doing, pray to the Father. He loves to help. You’ll get his help, and won’t be condescended to when you ask for it. Ask boldly, believingly, without a second thought. People who “worry their prayers” are like wind-whipped waves. Don’t think you’re going to get anything from the Master that way, adrift at sea, keeping all your options open.

^9-11When down-and-outers get a break, cheer! And when the arrogant rich are brought down to size, cheer! Prosperity is as short-lived as a wildflower, so don’t ever count on it. You know that as soon as the sun rises, pouring down its scorching heat, the flower withers. Its petals wilt and, before you know it, that beautiful face is a barren stem. Well, that’s a picture of the “prosperous life.” At the very moment everyone is looking on in admiration, it fades away to nothing.

¹²Anyone who meets a testing challenge head-on and manages to stick it out is mighty fortunate. For such persons loyally in love with God, the reward is life and more life.

^13-15Don’t let anyone under pressure to give in to evil say, “God is trying to trip me up.” God is impervious to evil, and puts evil in no one’s way. The temptation to give in to evil comes from us and only us. We have no one to blame but the leering, seducing flare-up of our own lust. Lust gets pregnant, and has a baby: sin! Sin grows up to adulthood, and becomes a real killer.

^16-18So, my very dear friends, don’t get thrown off course. Every desirable and beneficial gift comes out of heaven. The gifts are rivers of light cascading down from the Father of Light. There is nothing deceitful in God, nothing two-faced, nothing fickle. He brought us to life using the true Word, showing us off as the crown of all his creatures.

Act on What You Hear

^19-21Post this at all the intersections, dear friends: Lead with your ears, follow up with your tongue, and let anger straggle along in the rear. God’s righteousness doesn’t grow from human anger. So throw all spoiled virtue and cancerous evil in the garbage. In simple humility, let our gardener, God, landscape you with the Word, making a salvation-garden of your life.

^22-24Don’t fool yourself into thinking that you are a listener when you are anything but, letting the Word go in one ear and out the other. Act on what you hear! Those who hear and don’t act are like those who glance in the mirror, walk away, and two minutes later have no idea who they are, what they look like.

²⁵But whoever catches a glimpse of the revealed counsel of God—the free life!—even out of the corner of his eye, and sticks with it, is no distracted scatterbrain but a man or woman of action. That person will find delight and affirmation in the action.

^26-27Anyone who sets himself up as “religious” by talking a good game is self-deceived. This kind of religion is hot air and only hot air. Real religion, the kind that passes muster before God the Father, is this: Reach out to the homeless and loveless in their plight, and guard against corruption from the godless world.
